THE THREE MOTHERS by Anna Malaika Tubbs

Before reading The Three Mothers, just the thought of the mothers of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin knocked my socks off. 

I mean truly, why has no one ever talked about these three incredible women who raised three of the most prominent men who have ever lived?

It seems insane as soon you as you take it into consideration.

Anna Malaika Tubbs highlights in her book that by not seeing clearly through the haze of American culture we are, “erasing mothers (especially Black mothers) from the historical narrative.” 

Alberta King, Louise Little, and Berdis Baldwin were born within five years of each other. They all gave birth to boys who would become world-changing men within six years of each other, they all married preachers, and they all lived to watch their sons die while trying to make this country a better version of itself. 

The Three Mothers is expertly researched. It is extensively investigated. Anna elegantly weaves the three stories of these women’s lives into the most incredible history lesson that I have ever experienced in a single book. 

I am in awe of her ability to succinctly and clearly carry the reader through a massive amount of difficult history, while also highlighting the awe-inspiring contributions that mothers—these three mothers, as well as all mothers—offer the world.

It is incredibly difficult to achieve what Anna achieves in this book. This is a love letter to all mothers. It is a love letter to mothers who have lost a child, and it is especially a love letter to all of the Black mothers who have had to be stronger than any one person should ever have to be, while facing judgement for being tough. 

This book brought me to tears several times. It took my breath away. Anna Malaika Tubbs offers us a gift with her elegant tapestry of stories highlighting these extraordinary Black mothers in history. 

The Three Mothers is a book that challenges us to pick up a pen and paper and start putting mothers back in the stories where they belong. Give them the credit. Shine a light on their contributions, and see them. Anna wants us to rightfully acknowledge them as great workers and divine warriors.

This hit me tho, my queen deserves better!

Daenerys won’t even be remembered as the woman who saved them all because no one outside of the North knew the AotD even existed. The biggest threat of the series went unnoticed by pretty much the entire world. And everyone in the North who do know what Daenerys did for them are the very same people who betrayed and murdered her so they certainly won’t be telling the people of Westeros that they conspired against their savior long before she gave them any reason to do so.

being a black widow stan is watching the vormir scene and your heart is ripped out from your chest and you start sobbing your lungs out but when you look around the cinama, you don’t see anyone else sharing your feelings. 

being a black widow stan is silent suffering bc when you leave the cinema after endgame, you see that the buzz is all about tony (and rightfully so) but no one even mentions about nat, it’s talking about the movie with your friends but when you tell them how you started crying during vormir, they shake your feelings off and tell you ‘i didn’t even care about bw’s death’, it’s telling your sibling that her death affected you so much but they reply with a ‘her death was predictable, she had no family’ and you’re just so tired trying to validate your feelings to people around you - it’s a constant feeling of annoyance bc natasha romanoff is SO MUCH MORE than just a ‘rose amongst the thorns’, but marvel downplayed her strength and role and never bothered to explore her character just bc she has “no superpowers”.

being a black widow stan is endless frustrations bc when you go to stores, you only see one or two merchandises of hers, sometimes even none at all - she and clint are always left out from og6 merchandises anyway;  you go on social media only to see people calling her death insignificant when she’s one of the damn major reasons the avengers won, you read comments that don’t even remember her sacrifice, don’t even acknowledge her existence. being a black widow stan is so fcking hard bc marvel really paid her character fcking dust, she could have been more popular if they did her right, her sacrifice could have been just as significant, impactful as tony’s but bc marvel never truly developed her character therefore non-stans don’t feel anything when she plunged straight to her death. 

being a black widow stan is having a constant fear that the black widow movie (2020) will not do well in the box office bc you don’t see anyone (excluding nat stans) talking about it, or being even remotely excited about it, it gets you to question if it really is the next marvel movie after ffh, or is it just in your head? all you see are ppl with their ‘who cares, she’s dead’ comments, and it absolutely breaks your heart because being a black widow stan is always telling people she deserves better, it is sounding like an awful broken record - you can’t help but to, bc if you don’t do it, who will?
