Ok so I wrote a ficlet for Cloud's birthday. It could be read as something that happened in chapter 4 of Lights in the Basement but it also works as a standalone about Cloud and Zack visiting Cloud's mother in Nibelheim.

"Mom, no. Tell me you didn't." Cloud hid his face behind his fingers.

Zack grinned, eyes lighting up at the sight of the enormous cake Claudia was putting down in front of Cloud. "Are you kidding, Cloud? This is awesome!"

Cloud looked at his mother. "But my birthday was over three months ago, mom."

"Yes, and I missed the past two birthdays, because you were in Midgar. So we're going to celebrate now. Sixteen is kind of a big deal."

Zack bounced in his seat. "We've gotta sing, right? Right?!"

Cloud groaned, "No, Zack. Please. You are not singing happy birthday."

Zack put his hands together beseechingly. "Aw, Cloud. We have to. Pleeeease?"

Claudia smiled at Zack as she put a hand on his shoulder. "Zack. It's fine. He doesn't want to. He hates being the centre of attention. Leave him alone."

Cloud acquiesced slightly. "You can do the singing and stuff if you see me on my actual birthday some time."

"Which is when, exactly? 'Cause I'm gonna hold you to that."

Cloud glowered at him, but Claudia answered. "August 11th."

"Cool." Zack nodded, and pulled out his phone to note it down. "I can't believe you never told me before now."

"It's not a big deal, Zack. It's just another day."

Zack feigned hurt. "Cloud! You're one of my best friends. It's a big deal to me."

Claudia lit a match and started lighting candles. "Well, we're all here now, so let's enjoy it." She stood back and smiled at Cloud. "Make a wish, baby."

Cloud looked over at Zack. He was staring, rapt, at the dancing flames atop the cake.

Cloud couldn't bring himself to look away from the way the candlelight caught Zack's eyes.

He blew out the candles, closed his eyes, and made a wish.
