While I can definitely see the appeal in adding nods towards older works in a genre into your work, I feel like some stories go so hard into the placing nods aspect that they don't really develop their own strong, coherent identities. This isn't too bad of a thing to happen in short little one off stories,but for bigger stories the derivativeness can leave one wondering "Why should I engage with your work instead of the ones you keep referencing?"
Yeah, that plot beat you're doing is typical of the genre, but what does it add to the story to have it here? Is it actually a thought out part of your story or does it just signal "Hey, I saw X"? Do you even know why it worked in the stories you took inspiration from? Yes, that character archetype is common,but do you even understand why that archetype worked in context while you're working on your offbrand version of character X?

Reluctantly accepting that I do not need to write out in detail the interlude between these two scenes, partly because I'm not even sure what to put between the scenes for extra oomph, but also partly because this is a short story, and I need to learn restraint.
#in between revisions of the novel and a lot of other stuff I've been converting some oof comic stories into just written short stories#allows me to stretch my imaginative muscles by reworking old ideas and also helps when I don't feel like drafting the next novel#these short stories are also a nice way to get to work with majorly different subjects and themes from my main projects#like the aftermath of wars that happened centuries before the main story#or a group of prospective adoptees viewing themselves as products to be marketed even if that's not how they'd word it
