All around me people were

bumping into things like

blood in an artery or vein.

Bumping into new jobs and friends

Bumping into new boyfriends

girlfriends, cars and cafés.

Why wasn’t I bumping into anything?

Why wasn’t anything bumping into me?

I sat alone on my bed in my small

apartment tossing an orange into the air.

getting it as close to the ceiling as I could without touching it

waiting for all life to reveal itself to me.

waiting for the day to end

so I could just go back to sleep
