10 Questions w/ Fulbright Fellow & PhD Student Adam Zimmer! (Full version via Patreon link in bio!)⁣ ⁣ 2. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY ENTAIL? It depends on the day. If I’m working in the med school lab, I spend my day looking at the hundreds and hundreds of bones. Otherwise I’m usually working at a café here in Reykjavík sorting photos of the bones, looking at spreadsheets with measurements, and chatting with other scientists on #ScienceTwitter!⁣ ⁣ 7. WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST PART OF YOUR JOB? The weirdest part of my job is people sending me emails that say, “Our lab is getting a new freezer and we discovered a mummified human head in the back. Can you help us figure out where it came from?” The one case that weirded me out the most was a box of heel skins that was given to my old lab. Someone skinned the bottom of a bunch of human heels, dried the skin out, and kept them in a cardboard box. To this day, I don’t think we know where they came from or what sort of project that researcher was working on.⁣ ⁣ 8. HOW DOES BEING AN OPENLY QUEER SCIENTIST INFORM YOUR WORK? One of the challenges about studying the human body is that lots of people, and especially scientists, assume there are irrefutable “truths” about who humans are and how we can be defined. Being a queer person myself, I interact on a daily basis with people whose bodies, genetics, gender presentations, family structures, and whole states of being don’t align with typical categories. I’m starting a new project! This March I'll be turning 29, which means I have almost exactly thirteen months to get on a thirty under thirty list. So get nominating, folks. 😉⁣ Such dates, however arbitrary, makes one think. ⁣⁣ ⁣ I just started reading "The Starless Sea" by Erin Morgenstern, who famously got her start by participating in the annual National Novel Writing Month aka NaNoWriMo. ⁣ ⁣ Participants start a new project on November 1 and must write at least 50,000 words by November 30. NaNoWriMo is the kind of thing I think about doing every year, and it's even encouraged me to write more for a couple of weeks, but I've never REALLY participated. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So, yesterday, as I was staring out the window and pondering all this, I wished that November were sooner and that I could participate in NaNoWriMo right now. I quickly realized, of course, that this is ridiculous and I'm allowed to set my own lofty writing goals whenever I want. AND, I realized that it was the first day of a month! Fate. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So, my friends, I'm doing my own mini writing month. My birthday is on 3/27, so it’ll be a little gift to myself at the end of the month. MiniWriMo. I got an idea for a fictional story, and I'm going to put in 500 words a day from 3/1-3/31.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ RULES:⁣⁣ 1. No deleting.⁣⁣ 2. No researching. ⁣⁣ 3. No rollover. (The extra words I wrote yesterday don't count toward today's 500.)⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I look forward to sharing the drafts I write with my Patreon patrons! I woke up from a bad dream every morning this week. My neck sweaty and my stomach aching.
