Critical Anaylsis
MI4019, where we had to make a podcast on the topic of Disney’s shift to live-action remakes. Initially it sounded boring to me, I’ve done something similar to this brief and it didn’t seem new at all. Then I introduced the idea of making it into more of a video format podcast to my group in which they reacted enthusiastically to it. It was more of the excitement of trying something new than repeating something we already did before. Since we also had the research behind it to back it up, due to its high rise in demand, the idea was approved. At the beginning of the project, we were more excited about drawing emotes and the video side than the audio, making us completely forget the main goal of the brief. We had more research and examples to show than what was asked of us. We quickly realised our issue and started to focus on what was asked of us in the brief instead later.
It wasn’t really hard to record the podcast at the beginning. That wasn’t one of our main issues at the time. It was the script and the limited time given to us. Our goal was to make a conversation between friends on certain topics and their views on it, instead of being too professional. So we ended up making seven questions for it. We ended up only recording three of them in the end. This made us rethink our plan and re-write the script to be shorter- we also got advice, to make our questions more simple and generic. Which at the time didn’t really make me question it, because writing the questions was much easier to write.
Thus, we recorded again, almost losing time. However, we had issues again, not all members of our group spoke an equal amount than some other members of the group. There was also the fact that this topic can be pretty controversial at this time, that we didn’t really speak much on its positives, and more of its negatives. So we ended up having to record the entire session again. We also got more members in the team during the process, and by a stroke of luck we ended up getting a recording studio through family connections. We ended up finalising the entire audio afterwards.
Editing the video was probably the most exciting part for us, in how we could use emotes to react to certain dialogues or scenes. It was just an additional thing that we were able to do. The cover page in itself wasn’t as hard as we thought it would be, since we were still going with that laidback and chill vibe of a university student, instead of a professional podcast maker. We focused more on emphasising our vibe to our audience.
Overall, there were some minor issues we were able to overcome during the work time, nor did it feel overwhelming to do the brief. So I would say we did well.

Emotes

My character Juniper, is meant to be seen as a sleep deprived uni student who was forced to participate in the podcast due to her friend Zahra dragging her to begin a new podcast to escape the annoyances of assignments and just being able to speak their minds about anything.
They are meant to come out as a more dark humored character with having been raised with horror movies and grimm content. But deep inside, even though they didn't initially want to join in the creation of 'power of two' - enjoys speaking about the topics that come.

Zahra is the Host, the extrovert and the reason why the show even happened.
Noah is the Laid Back and surprisingly film/socially aware dude.

Draft Podcast

Script - Draft
Do you think it’s morally right for Disney to keep profiting off of the same stories, especially since many of them come from older cultures and their folktales?
It depends on how they depict themselves: Profit vs Expectations
The Grimm Brothers and their dark stories turned digestible for the mass market.
It’s honestly inspiration more than an adaptation.
Cultural Appropriation and Capitalism.
What part of the original films do you think gets lost in translation when they are turned into Live Action adaptations?
Animation expression is lost, and kids don’t really appreciate realism.
It’s a replica of real life, doesn’t hold that Disney Magic.
This tactic would work if they really tried to stick to their generation (audience).
It would have worked if there was magic in real life but there isn’t.
If the live action remakes are making billions in the market today, can we really blame Disney for going that route? Or is there, at any point, a part where the audience has to take responsibility too?
Consumer cycle.
Is it really their fault for shifting when we keep asking for more?
Disney is bored of recreating stuff/ The market keeps changing.
They don’t have the creative impact or story telling.
Innovative storytelling is lacking now.
Walt disney’s death: History is repeating itself.
It may not really be the consumers fault for asking.
Is there anything creatively exciting about these remakes? Or is it essentially artistically hollow?
The general impact: The excitement of it being realistic and how they are growing up with the adults.
Being raised with Disney and seeing Disney grow.
It takes away the essence of Disney animation- sometimes realism doesn’t fulfil the need for adventure and curiosity.
It depends on the audience.
No more surface level characters.
How does Disney’s casting and rewriting choices in remakes reflect modern social values? And are those changes performative, or sincere?
They are trying to fit in with this current generation (Gen Z)
Good intentions and bad execution on disney’s part.
Disney is taking the ‘we are all the same’ a bit too literally, and forgoing history to an extent.
Wiping away what no longer fits, and basically chaotically duck taping a good story horribly.
High risk with working with disney now due to backlash.
Where should the line be between meaningful change and faithful adaption when reimagining a well beloved classic?
You can do anything with it, as long as the morale/ mood of the story doesn’t change.
People are very hard to satisfy these days.
If a child’s first exposure towards Disney was a live action remake, do you think they are missing out? Or are we being protective of our own nostalgia?
General bias.
It doesn’t affect the child’s memory.
The psychology behind realism and the affect on children’s behaviour: How fiction and non fiction blurs.
It could be a reality for the newer generations.
The Video Games and how it was still successful compared to disney. The DIfferences and Why.

This is a more causal thing that represents our more inner personality, with less professionalism. This is to help more new comers to understand us, as well as showcase a more chill duo of struggling students just having fun.
Cover
This is a more professional outlook to our podcast. Where we represent our characters as well as have a Juniper plant with flowers in it to signify us. Zahra's name means flowers and Juniper is a fruit tree. Its meant to signify our connection as close friends and how our lives intwertwine with each other.

Incoperation to our podcast
There has been an uprising in podcasts starting to show visuals and making them into a video format from the high demand from consumers. So we decided to use little characters of our own and apply them into a video format without audio. Each character will have a set of emotions that will change throughout the video depending on the context of the situation. Our biggest inspirations come from png vtubers and a youtube account named Spilled Ink.
They both have similar things, in which Spilled ink is a youtube channel, hosted by a couple, Daidus and Emily (Emirichu), they use these png characters to show their emotions, as it's filmed with a hand camera. This channel is considered a podcast, with it not needing visuals as they talk about life, artistic challenges and drama within the industry while drawing/painting. But all these visuals aren’t necessary but for the viewers satisfaction of watching as well. A Lot of podcasts have changed from not having any visual content and doing it later on after some episodes.
However this is different for png vtubers. The major reason they use png images is due to it being cheaper to commission from artists and it is something easy to make without having to buy a 3D or 2D modal. Another reason is just like spilled ink, they don’t show their faces, but not for the same reason. Vtubers hide their identity from the media and use these images to bring theatrical entertainment.
Examples of podcasts that changed into visual videos are distractible and Trash Taste. Distractible is a podcast hosted by Mark Fischbach, Bob Muyskens, and Wade Barnes. They are a major popular podcast and have recordings of their faces in their youtube channel for their podcast. They all have their different cameras, so they edit all the videos together and make it look like it's an online call. Which is how they record it, through call.
This was our initial thought process as well for our own podcast, but thought against it when we thought of the technical difficulty that may happen. However, we are planning on using the way they lead their conversation within their podcast, it's an entire conversation that isn’t fully thought out, which makes it sound like the listener is a part of an actual conversation.
Trash Taste is a podcast hosted by Joey Bizinger (The Anime Man), Garnet Maneetapho (Gigguk) and Connor Colquhoun (CDawgVA). Its a podcast in which they talk about anime, manga and the otaku culture in general, with their living experience in Japan. But unlike Distractible, They record themselves in a specific room where everyone is together. This is what we are using as well.

Disney from the begiining till 1999
The Walt Disney Company was founded by Walt and Roy O. 1923, Disney used to be considered a modest cartoon studio, compared to its present fame for its animations and childhood films.

Disney began with Alice comedies where they blended live action and animation together, however they stood out within the industry in 1928 through their current trademark- Steamboat Willie, who introduced Mickey Mouse.
In 1937, they released their full length animation movie, Snow White and the seven dwarfs. They were heavily criticized in whether the movie would be successful, but was later on contradicted with its major success and helping Disney to gain further recognition and connection to fundings for future works.

The Golden age of Disney struggled with making multiple movies with WW2 taking over, but with the popularity and with the help of funding they were able to publish Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), and Bambi (1942). Also, with Disney having collaboration with the U.S government, created training and propaganda movies for them.
Right after the war, Disney came out with Cinderella (1950), Peter Pan (1953), and Lady and the Tramp (1955). Walt Disney was thinking of improving Disney and opened in California making it a household channel showcasing Mickey Mouse Club and the wonderful world of Disney. This was channeled out throughout every American household, making it an unforgettable part for a lot of kids in that generation. But during the peak of fame, was when Walt Disney died, making the company have complications in the future decision making.
Disney struggled to move on from this problem and with no leader, struggled with innovative ideas even with them having a steady pace of output. Movies like The Aristocats (1970) and The Fox and the Hound (1981), while they did well, have no creative impact on the world and have no recognition with the present time. Disney World opened in Florida in 1971 and Epcot center followed in 1982. Even with such business decisions made, they were still haunted by Walt Disney’s death.
However this changed when Michael Eisner took over in 1984. This was the era in which Disney started to experiment with all types of media and focused on high quality animation and live action. This was Disney’s renaissance era. Major films that existed were, The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Mulan (1998) and Tarzan (1999). This was the weakest Disney got within the industry and was appreciated worldwide.

Distractible
Distractible is a podcast created by Mark Fischbach, Wade Barnes and Bob Muyskens, who create humorous discussions on whatever topics they plan out on the day and then let it lead the conversation with no script created. It’s also a space for them to complain and joke about their daily life problems and situations they dealt with in their childhood.
What I enjoy mostly about listening to their podcast is the familiarity mostly, and their dry humor. It's interesting to hear about the stuff they researched on and their perspective on things on topics they’d go on talking about. It helps numb my brain really fast with their constant talking. I guess that's what I enjoy the most, where there are topics broken down into very detailed thought processes and intellectual debates that are more fun to listen to than it being less of a lecture based thing.
I suppose all three of them do it really well, with their lives being social media presence. Also their episode title and descriptions are so hilarious to read. They make no sense, but so much sense at the same time. They might not be everyone's cup of tea, but these old men were part of my childhood. They do cater more to the older audience than the younger generations with them themselves not being part of it. So it makes sense, if some people don't like listening to it.

Podcast - audio and Script
Mighty ancient voice (idk sage hearing thing) narrates the opening of the podcast
Old man: - welcome again listeners, Rui and Reki will be venturing into the world of animation and how it has affected the world. Will Rui actually be able to not fanboy over it or will Reki actually stop being so annoying…
Really quickly: - Caution the mention of suicide, bully and sexual molestation will be mentioned and this podcast does not encourage self harm or bullying in any way. If you feel like you're harming yourself please look for help and reach out to people.
Open the show
Reki: - I think I made the narrator realllly mad…
Rui: - ya what did you do? They’re usually never this passive aggressive- also no I won’t be fanboying thank you very much.
Reki: - I DON'T KNOW *sign*
Rui: - *chuckling* well that’s something for you to deal with behind the show. Anyways how’ve you been? And what’s the topic you choose today?
Reki: - I’m fine, I just woke up like a few minutes ago- anyways I choose something dark today… you know about the music video about Ruru’s suicide show.
Rui: - ah yaaa, that’s such a sad case, I watched a live stream about the entire case… for context to the people, it’s about this female student in Japan who killed herself on stream in her apartment by falling. The entire thing was streamed and it was all due to her being constantly being ignored at home and bullying from school. There’s also been comments about how some of her commenters were old men constantly commenting sexual innuendos in chat. It’s an entire case and became famous when a music video came out about the situation.
Reiki: - *deep sign* yaaa, but I feel like the band and animation team did a really good job with the video and really well executing the history of the case. Them trying to bring awareness and following Ruru’s wishes to be famous was just honestly amazing… But I guess thats what music and animations can do. Bring awareness to things without it always being so nauseating to hear with the actual live photos and scene. It gives a kind of barrier to help understand the situation through such visuals.
Rui: - Thats true! The 3d and 2d aspects they added with the video and the childish voice as the singer was just such great decision making and even though the meaning behind the song was so sad, it just seems like such a happy song and made me want to sing along. Which is so sweet because Ruru always wanted to bring others joy…ahhh god I wish I could erase my memory and deeply analyse it all over again. Japanese music always seem to do that alot actually, they have sad songs but make it sound really fun and joyful. ‘Racing into the night’ by Yoasobi was also another one. People who haven’t watched this, go right now. It really doesn’t take that long.
Reiki: - *Laughes* Hey, all our listeners are going to forget us now. But ya, I just wanted to talk about the video u recommended to me a long time ago-
Rui: - so long! I'm mad it took you this long.
Reiki: - I'm sorry dude *chuckles* But ya, that's about it.
#Im cringing#I should just identify myself as mute#I suck at names#apologies in advance#This made me realize I have such an Asian accent#urhhhhh#I improvised some of the words

Why Do People Listen to Podcasts?
There are many reasons why people listen to podcasts, especially as a person who also listens to them when I try to work. Podcasts are mostly for people who need something to stimulate their brain while doing something, like commuting to work, or cleaning the house. Our brain has slowly started to grow advanced to the point in where we need constant stimulation, because we are so used to being constantly given new information due to social media.
Podcasts are just a way of calming the brain down when doing such mindless activities. Major factor is being entertained with people’s daily drama in life or humorous comedies, to audiobooks. All content has changed from the normal live media that we can witness in video formato or physically to a more audio format for listeners to easily digest.
Moreover, it also provided white noise for people. Some listeners don’t tend to listen to whatever is going on and just need some noise for their brain to comprehend and focus on while working. This can go from long philosophical talks, to even ASMR.
The variety of content within Podcasts are very versatile and have many genres with the increase within content and social media within the world. It provided listeners a safe place for them to exist in while also building communities for people to share their common interest in.
History of Podcast
