Magazine-
I began putting together sections of my magazine:
Tumblr media
The first section is a timeline of major events to happen in F1 history. I decided to use black and white images because I knew that I wanted to use brightly coloured text. I like the layout I made because I feel that it works well and makes the content flow nicely. I decided to place the image on the left hand side page and the right page has the year, title and brief summary of what happened.
Tumblr media
I then added in the section on the collaboration between ASAP rocky x F1 x Puma. I chose to use darker tones for this section to contrast with the brightly coloured text I have used. I also edited the images to work better with the ‘aesthetic’ of my magazine.
Tumblr media
I then added in the section 'from racetrack to retail'. I'm happy with how the editing in this section turned out and I feel that my own images work well alongside the text and editing.
Tumblr media
The next section I added was about Lewis Hamilton. For this section I chose to use mainly black backgrounds to contrast with the brighter colours used throughout as I didn't want the pages to be repetitive. I feel that the editing I have done on these pages work well alongside the text.
The final piece-
I feel that my finished magazine is successful as my imagery and editing translate my ideas and inspirations really well. I feel that the way I navigated my layouts have given the magazine a flowing and put together look, making it easy to follow and take in. I’m also happy with how my colour scheme has turned out as each section is different but still relates back to my initial ideas and narrative.

Front cover choice-
Tumblr media
I decided that I would use this image as I felt that it was strong and would make a good impression as a front cover. I was drawn to this image as I think that I captured the model nicely, I like that she is looking straight into the lens, I also like how the helmet has been captured. The colours of the Image didn’t necessarily achieve the petrol spill look however I think that they interact nicely with the image and editing. To achieve the look of a petrol spill, I chose to edit the title so that it was translucent to a degree and captured the right colours. I also chose to put the title central as I felt it looked best like this. I have also added in a radial blur to capture the idea of movement.

Front cover experiments-
Once I was happy with my images, I began to choose the ones that stood out to me so that I could begin putting together my front cover. I decided to experiment with 5 different images as they all have the model in different poses therefore I could look deeply into what layout and placements work best. I also edited my images in the style that I had chosen previously so that I could capture the look of a petrol spill. I also chose to add a grain to the images as I feel it has made the colours less harsh and easier on the eyes.
Tumblr media
Layout experiments :
1•
Tumblr media
I feel that this image looks good as the front cover image as the model has been captured well. I also feel that the editing compliments this image nicely and really captures the idea of a petrol spill. As for the text, I feel that the title serves well when it is central with this image I also think that having the text somewhat transparent helps it to interact nicely with the image. This image stands out to me as it communicates my research and inspirations really well.
2•
Tumblr media
This image works nicely as the front cover image as it communicates my narrative really well. The way that I have edited the colours don’t necessarily display those of a petrol spill but I feel that the editing is still effective and interacts well with the image nonetheless. With this image, the text works best when it is placed towards the top of the cover, I chose to experiment with text size and colouring as well as using the motion blur to create the look of movement and speed.
3•
Tumblr media
This image works well when communicating the narrative because of the wheel and helmet. The editing and colour also works nicely with the image, however I think that it doesn’t look good as a front cover. I feel that it would serve better on a page inside the magazine.
4•
Tumblr media
I feel that this image is arguably one of the strongest because it has been captured proficiently and is able to communicate the narrative well. I also feel that the frame of the model in the image will look good on the front cover. I’m pleased with how the editing and colour have turned out as well, they don’t look precisely like a petrol spill but they still have the same effect and the colours interact well with the image. For text, I decided to experiment with placement in the first image I chose to place the text vertically, I think that this works well and looks good however I’m more drawn to the horizontal text as it fits nicely into the layout. I also experimented with colour, opacity and motion of the text.
5•
Tumblr media
With this image, I wasn’t drawn to how the colours had turned out after editing. I don’t like the use of purple and green beside each other and so I won’t be using this image for my front cover, however I’m still pleased with the placement and image. I was also able to experiment with the grain, colour and opacity of the text and establish what techniques I think are most effective.

Photography-
I have taken some more images to be used in my magazine. For this shoot I got my model to wear a helmet and keep the outfit simple. My initial ideas were for this shoot to take place outside by a main road so that I could capture cars in the background, I wasn’t happy with the background in my images as the most noticeable thing were the houses rather than the road/cars. Whilst I didn’t like the background of some images, I was happy with how I captured the model. I feel that these images are going to work really well in my magazine as they capture my inspiration and narrative really well. In some of the images I chose to cut out the background and edit in a racetrack, I feel this was successful as the final edit looks natural and works really well.

Jacket Section-
I would like to include a mini section into my magazine that shows different racing jackets. I would like to do this because it is a key garment for my narrative and was also a main source of inspiration for me.
Tumblr media
I think that having these on a white background with minimal text in the corner will be really effective and look great.
Tumblr media
I think that blurred & opaque backgrounds could also look good behind some of the images.
I have decided that I will be placing my images of the jackets onto a plain white background, I chose this because my magazine is going to be brightly coloured therefore I wanted to create a contrast. I began to put together the pages by cutting the images and then placing them onto the background, I also added some simple text on the bottom left hand corner that explains what is being depicted. Once I was happy with the appearance I placed all the pages onto an A5 indesign file.

Colour palette & type-
I have decided that I’m definitely going to be using the following fonts in my magazine:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will be using Gabriella for the main headline texts and subtitles, and stratos will be used for my body text font. I have chosen these as they are bold and simple and I feel that they will work really well alongside my narrative.
For my colour palette I have decided that I won’t be having a set choice of colours that I will stick to, I want my colours to reflect those seen in a petrol spill and so I will be using a variety of colour. The colour will be mainly bright however there will be a contrast of darks.

Magazine Contents-
1. I will be using images I have taken throughout my magazine and will also be using images from other sources that I will edit myself.
2. I will be including a brief introduction where I will talk about F1 and the sports history.
3. I would like to do a section that features the collaboration between A$AP Rocky x PUMA x F1 as this was one of my main sources of inspiration for the magazine and I feel it communicates my narrative well by brining together motorsport and fashion.
4. I would also like to include a feature on Lewis Hamilton, he is considered to be the best of all time in F1 and he also has ties with the fashion industry as he has taken part in multiple collabs with brands as well as creating his own fashion line.
5. I want to create a section that speaks about my ideas of ‘racetrack to retail’, I will go into informational depth about the reasoning behind why the drivers wear what they do and then I will talk about how inspiration has been drawn from these garments for every day wear.
6. I know that my magazine is going to be quite brightly coloured and filled with strong imagery, therefore I had the idea to include a smaller cut section to place into the middle of my magazine, this section will feature a collection of different ‘racing jackets’ as this is a key garment in my narrative and is also a main source of inspiration.
7. I would like to include a section on Ferrari as a Formula One team as well as their involvement in the fashion industry.
8. To finish, I will add a small section talking about the fans and what it means to them/what they do for the sport.

Photoshoot-
To move forward, I continued taking pictures to use in my magazine. I decided to take some close up images of clothes that relate to my narrative that I could use as backgrounds or double page spreads in my magazine. I also wanted to experiment with using a car in my images as this would relate, I didn’t want it to be overly obvious though so I only took close up shots and included the model subtly.
Tumblr media
I was happy with how my images turned out, however I knew that I wanted to edit the colours so that I could establish a colour palette. I began experimenting with hues by inverting the colours and playing with the intensity and saturation. My aim was to edit the colours in the images so that they appeared similar to a petrol spill, I also edited some to just be brightly coloured as I know I want a bright colour palette.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m happy with how my editing has turned out as I feel that I have achieved the look I was aiming for, I feel that the Images correspond well with my narrative and will definitely be using this editing style in my final piece.

London Trip-
I was given the opportunity to take a trip to London, my main goal was to gather as much primary imagery as possible to use in my magazine. Whilst there, I was able to go into the Ferrari shop and take photos;
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also had the opportunity to visit Dover street market and Bind street, here I was able to gather more imagery that relates to my narrative;

Text and Layout experiments-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to begin experimenting with text and layout to see if I found any techniques that I liked that weren’t basic.
1. In the first image I used photoshop to overlay the text and then cut out the outline so that the image underneath became visible. I really like how the technique has turned out and feel that it would look great as a page filler in my magazine.
2. In the second image I was inspired by a layout seen in another magazine, I placed the outline of an F1 racetrack in the centre of a body of text. I really like this layout as it isn’t basic and allows me to play with imagery as well, I will definitely use this in my magazine.
3. Again, using the outline of a F1 racetrack I used the pen tool on Indesign and the type on a path tool to add text around the outline of the image. I think this works really well and would like to use it further.
4. I wanted to experiment with the sizing, spacing and tilt of each letter to see if I could achieve a ‘moving affect’, I don’t really like how this turned out I feel it looks messy and basic and doesn’t achieve the same affect as other techniques I’ve tried.
5. Using the F1 racetrack outline, I used the type on a path tool to add text to the inner of the outline. I think this looks good but isn’t very practical as you can’t follow the text well and looks a bit too busy.

Font & Front Cover experiments-
I decided to use photoshop to begin playing with different effects that I could use on my fonts. I chose to play with motion blur as I wanted my title to communicate the idea of movement and speed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like how these have turned out and I feel that they communicate my narrative really well as the motion represents speed and movement effectively. I will use these examples on mock up front cover images to get an idea of whether they work well as a title font or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m really happy with how my mockups turned out and I think that this font and effect work really well. I love how the editing has worked as the different blurs compliment the imagery behind the font well. I have also decided that I’m going to use predominantly bright colours as it grabs the eye of passers by and also relates to my theme as racing teams tend to use bright colours.

Brief-
‘Racetrack to Retail’
During this project, I aim to create a magazine that is able to bring and mix together motorsport and fashion. My magazine will shed light on the realness and technicality of motorsport as well as the world of fashion and how the two cross paths. My magazine is for anyone who has an interest in both fashion and motorsport, these themes bought together could be seen as niche and so it will be a specific group who share these interests.
I wanted to choose these themes because in recent years there has been a rise in popularity of motorsport. There has been multiple pieces of media released such as movies and TV shows that have helped to aid this rise in popularity. As motorsport has become more seen, it has also impacted fashion. Brands started to release designs inspired by the sport and celebrities began to take on motorsport inspired looks. Because of the recent attention the sport has been getting and the impact it has had on fashion I feel that it will be a great theme for my magazine. My inspiration has also been driven by the recent rise in popularity of the sport, seeing fashion articles that feature the sport and drivers has inspired me to want to make a magazine that focuses on these elements completely. I have also been inspired by collaborations between celebrities and F1 as I’m really drawn to the end product that is achieved when these two very different worlds come together.
I hope to achieve this all by first starting to bring together all my inspirations and researching them, I want to understand their approaches and how they achieved the finished product that I was initially drawn to. I will then begin to do further research to help cement my ideas, I will research motorsport as a whole and how it has came to impact fashion, I will also research any media related to the theme as well as other collaborations. Once I’m happy with my research I will begin to gather imagery and start to experiment with editing, layout and typography.
To move forward I will;
- further research motorsport to gain more information for my magazine.
- arrange photoshoots, think about styling and background.
- gather more imagery.
- start to put together my magazine by finalising ideas about layout, font and colour.

From Racetrack to Retail-
F1 drivers must wear specific clothing to ensure their safety and adhere to regulations;
- Race Suit: Fire-resistant race suits made of multiple layers of Nomex or other flame-retardant materials. These suits provide protection in case of fire-related incidents.
- Undergarments: Beneath the race suit, drivers wear fire-resistant underwear, including long-sleeved tops and long johns, also made of materials like Nomex.
- Gloves: Fire-resistant gloves are worn to protect the hands in the event of a fire or crash. These gloves also provide grip and tactile feedback for precise control of the car.
- Balaclava: A fire-resistant balaclava covers the head and neck, adding an extra layer of protection for the driver's head and face.
- Boots: Fire-resistant boots are worn to protect the feet and ankles. These boots are designed to provide grip on the pedals and are often made of lightweight materials for comfort.
- Helmet: Perhaps the most crucial piece of safety equipment, the helmet is mandatory for all drivers. F1 helmets are designed to withstand high-speed impacts and provide protection for the head in crashes. They also include features such as visors to protect the eyes and aerodynamic elements to improve airflow.
Tumblr media
Another garment material prominently seen in racing attire is leather , it has been traditionally used in automotive gear for its durability, abrasion resistance, and overall protective qualities.
Tumblr media
Whilst drivers are forced to wear these garments for safety and regulation reasons, motorsports have had a significant influence on fashion over the years particularly in terms of style, functionality and innovation. The athleisure trend, which blends athletic wear with casual clothing has been influenced by motorsports. The sleek and sporty aesthetic of racing gear, including form-fitting silhouettes, bold graphics, and high-tech fabrics has inspired athleisure brands and designers to create clothing that is both stylish and functional. Motorsports require clothing made from high-performance materials that provide comfort, durability and protection. These technical fabrics such as moisture-wicking materials, lightweight and breathable textiles and abrasion-resistant fabrics have made their way into mainstream fashion. Motorsports are synonymous with branding as teams and sponsors prominently display logos on race cars, driver suits and merchandise. This emphasis on branding has influenced fashion with brands incorporating logos and graphic elements inspired by motorsports into their designs. Logos of racing teams, automotive manufacturers and racing-inspired graphics are frequently seen on clothing, accessories, and footwear. Motorsports require clothing that not only looks good but also performs under demanding conditions. This emphasis on utility and functionality has influenced fashion, leading to the popularity of functional details like zippers, pockets and adjustable straps in clothing and accessories. Racing-inspired designs often prioritize practicality and versatility, offering garments that can transition seamlessly from the racetrack to the streets. Furthermore, Motorsports have a rich history with iconic racing liveries, classic cars and legendary drivers from different eras. The nostalgia associated with vintage motorsports has led to a revival of retro-inspired fashion trends, including retro racing jackets, vintage-style helmets and throwback graphics reminiscent of past racing eras.
Overall, motorsports continue to inspire fashion through their blend of performance, innovationand style, shaping trends and influencing designers and brands across the globe. Below, I found some examples of all of the points iterated above;

Magazine Name-
I began to research some words that I could use as a name for my magazine, I started to look at words related to motorsport that aren’t so obvious that would work well. I decided that I wanted to use the word ‘halo’, I chose this as it relates well to my theme as it is the name of a car part but is still aesthetically pleasing. F1 cars have halos primarily for safety reasons. The halo is a titanium structure that surrounds the driver's cockpit, introduced to protect drivers from flying debris and collisions.
