The 16mm film installation ‘the still walker #2: Moon Walk’ shows the artist herself practicing the “Moon Walk” - a technique that simulates walking while standing on the spot - a kind of “still walk”. She learned this movement through a YouTube tutorial that was available to the public. The idea came from the urban space, through the use of numerous escalators and public transport - here too it is a matter of movement while at the same time remaining stationary. In this work, the artist asked a number of questions, such as: what kind of physical state is inherent in standing itself, does it really mean standing still? Although I am not moving while on public transport, am I now moving on? Miae Son transferred this form of observation to her installation - with the help of analog film. The technique of the film projector generates a rotating movement of the film loop, but exercises this rotating mechanism while standing still. The super8 version that was produced in 2015 has been newly produced in a 16mm version in 2023.

The artist, as the protagonist is standing at a window in her apartment. The apartment is an old Viennese building with 3.5 meter ceilings. She is having trouble to  repair a broken blind which is mounted above the window. She climbs on the narrow window sill and tries to replace a small part of the blind. Unfortunately, she is a little too short to reach the broken part of the blind. Her body stretches as far as it can, and she stands on her tiptoes on the windowsill to reach higher. After this struggle, she steps down from the windowsill. She places a thick book on the windowsill, and then another until finally she has a small pile on the windowsill. She steps on the pile and finally reaches the blind. 

As a stool for support, she uses books exclusively by malephilosophers who have shaped European discourse. The texts translated into Korean indicate, on the one hand, the need for a sense of linguistic security and on the other, they reveal an inner compulsion to appropriate this European canon, which is shaped by power relations. ¹

Bigger addresses the difficulties of a migrant woman's body from her everyday life in a classical European living space and the domination of western culture.

Die Künstlerin als Protagonistin steht vor dem Fenster in ihrer Wohnung. Die Wohnung ist ein Wiener Altbau, mit einer Raumhöhe von ca. 3,5 Meter. Sie hat Schwierigkeiten, ein defektes Rollo am Fenster zu reparieren. Sie steigt auf die schmale Fensterbank und versucht einen kleinen Teil des Rollos zu ersetzen. Unglücklicherweise ist sie ein bisschen zu klein, um den Teil des Rollos zu erreichen. Ihr Körper streckt sich so weit als möglich, und sie steht auf Zehenspitzen auf der Fensterbank, um größer zu sein. Nach dieser Anstrengung steigt sie von der Fensterbank. Sie legt ein dickes Buch auf die Fensterbank. Sie bringt noch ein Buch und noch eins und schließlich stapelt sie mehrere Bücher auf die Fensterbank. Auf diese Bücher steigt sie und erreicht endlich das Rollo.

Als Stützen dienen ihr Bücher jener ausschließlich männlicher Philosophen, die den europäischen Diskurs geprägt haben. Die ins Koreanische übersetzten Werke signalisieren einerseits das Bedürfnis nach sprachlicher Sicherheit; zugleich zeigen sie den inneren Zwang auf, sich diesen europäischen Wissenskanon, der von Machtrelationen geprägt ist, aneignen zu müssen.¹

„Bigger” thematisiert die Schwierigkeiten eines migrantischen Frauenkörpers in ihrem Alltag im klassischen europäischen Wohnraum und die Macht der westlichen Welt.

Magpie Foot stands on tiptoe #1&2ㅣ Linoleum Print, 30 x 30cm,  2022

The title of the two prints refers to an idiom of South Korea, her country of birth, "magpie's foot" describes the act of standing on tiptoes.

These works show her misunderstanding from the foreign language and the reality.  

She thought sometimes ‘standing on tiptoes’ like #1.

#2 is a right image for ‘Magpie foot stands on tiptoe’  but In reality magpie can’t stand on tiptoes. Her Feet are flat.

The video , which is part of the installation "Your house did, anyway", shows Miae Son with a kite in the shape of a house. The artist has built it from bamboo wood and a rescue blanket itself. She is looking for large undeveloped construction sites, where it winds strong. An undefined place, not locatable in Vienna. The artist manages to get the kite flying there. Finally, the house blew up.

* The exhibition and its title refer to an event in the story The Wizard of Oz. When the main character Dorothy is brought into the land of the Munchins in her family’s house by a hurricane, the house buries the wicked witch of the East on his landing so that only her shoes will peek out from under the hut. When Dorothy denies her involvement in this violent crackdown, the Good Witch of the North response is:

“Your house did, anyway.”

In einem nicht lokalisierbaren Brachland lässt die Künstlerin Miae Son einen selbstgebauten Flugdrachen vor strahlend blauem Himmel steigen. Ein kleines Haus aus Bambus und silberner Folie, das Aufwind bekommt und in der Atmosphäre tanzt, bis es in die Luft fliegt. Beinahe jede Einstellung ein abstraktes Gemälde. Minimalistisch, aber voller Bewegung. Voller Leben und Sehnsucht. Unter strahlend blauem Himmel zeichnen sich ockerfarbene Erdhügel als niedrige Horizontlinie ab. Auf diesen windigen Erhöhungen eines nicht lokalisierbaren Brachlands lässt die Künstlerin Miae Son einen selbstgebauten Flugdrachen steigen. Ein aus Bambus und Rettungsdecke gefertigtes kleines Haus, das von Vogelgezwitscher begleitet Aufwind bekommt, in der Sonne funkelt und wie ein lebendiges Wesen in der Atmosphäre tanzt, bis es in die Luft fliegt – was nicht nur für diesen Himmelskörper Konsequenzen mit Fallhöhe hat. Beinahe jede Einstellung ein Gemälde, dessen dominierende Farbe Blau ist. Gelegentlich schält sich die Filmemacherin davor als Rückenfigur oder als schwarze Silhouette heraus, wird das Blau durchzogen von goldenen oder weißen Linien, schwarzem Haar und den Kondensstreifen anderer Flugobjekte. The video shows the everyday situation of the artist cutting her hair at home. She uses a free city map of Vienna that she found at home to collect her hair cuttings. While cutting it, she observes that the city is slowly getting darker, as her black hair covers the map and the short hairs link the different parts of the city.

Das Video zeigt eine alltägliche Situation:die Künstlerin schneidet sich in ihrer Wohnung die Haare. Die herabfallenden Haare sammelt sie auf einem Gratis-Stadtplan von Wien, den sie zu Hause gefunden hat. Während des Schneidens bemerkt sie, dass die Stadt sich langsam dunkel färbt, da die schwarzen Haare den Plan verdecken und ihre Haare die Stadtteile miteinander vernetzen.

The Moon is a symbol of change and time. Due to the flow of time, the reflection of the light shining back from the moon changes. Only after a certain time does the moon return to its original shape. "The moon" is a video installation that refers to this topic. The water breaks through its irregular organic movements, the reality of the mirrored moon, which thereby repeatedly loses its shape, and then back to its original state. The work is also the attempt to reproduce the night as an analogue principle in a digital-pictorial medium.

Der Mond ist ein Symbol des Wandels und der Zeit. Aufgrund des Zeitflusses ändert sich die Reflexion des Lichts, die vom Mond zurück leuchtet. Erst nach einer gewissen Zeit kehrt der Mond in seine ursprüngliche Gestalt zurück. “The moon” ist eine Videoinstallation, die sich auf dieses Thema bezieht. Das Wasser bricht durch seine unregelmäßigen organischen Bewegungen die Realität des gespiegelten Mondes, der dadurch immer wieder seine Gestalt verliert, um dann wieder zu seinem ursprünglichen Zustand zurück zu finden. Die Arbeit ist ausserdem der Versuch die Nacht als analoges Prinzip in einem digital-bildlichen Medium zu reproduzieren.

Hanna Schibel and Miae Son deal with different materials. They had the plan to exhibit in Berlin. They considered how to exhibit together. 

The two artists are sitting in front of the camera. They have two blank sketchbooks and drawing materials, such as paints, a paintbrush, and a quill pen. 

The video shows the production process for the graphic and performative work "Relay" by the two artists. They each leaf through the pages of their own sketchbook. On each side they draw alternately a line, as in a relay race. 

The starting point of one line is the end point of the other.  Starting point and end point meet. At the edge of the book a color line is staggered in the process. The successive books are composed, without adhesive, only by their frictional force. The French word 'tête-à-tête' means 'head to head' and 'in private'. That's a two-way conversation. It is a metaphor about the collaboration between two artists.

Miae Son und Hanna Schibel beschäftigen sich mit unterschiedlichen Materialien. Sie hatten den Plan, in Berlin auszustellen. Sie überlegten, wie sie zusammen ausstellen können.

Die beiden sitzen sich vor der Kamera gegenüber. Sie haben zwei leere Skizzenbücher und Zeichenmaterialien, wie Farben, einen Pinsel und eine Schreibfeder.

Das Video zeigt den Herstellungsprozess zur der zeichnerischen und performativen Arbeit ‚Staffellauf‘ von den beiden Künstlerinnen. Sie blättern jeweils die Seiten ihres eigenen Skizzenbuchs aufeinander. Auf jede Seite zeichnen sie abwechselnd eine Linie, wie bei einem Staffellauf.

Der Ausgangspunkt der einen Linie ist der Endpunkt der Anderen. Ausgangspunkt und Endpunkt treffen sich. Am Buchrand wird im Prozess eine Farblinie gestaffelt. Die aufeinander geblätterten Bücher werden, ohne Klebemittel, nur durch ihre Reibungskraft zusammengesetzt.

Das französische Wort ‚Tête-à-Tête‘ bedeutet ‚Kopf an Kopf‘ und ‚unter vier Augen‘. Das heißt ein Zwie-gespräch. Es ist eine Metapher über die Zusammenarbeit zwischen zwei Künstlerinnen.

Durch die Atembewegung der beiden Körper wird ein Abstand sichtbar. Dieser Abstand, dieses Nichts scheint lebendig zu werden: Diese Wellenbewegung beschreibt ganze Landschaften, aber auch die Nähe sowie den Abstand zwischen zwei Menschen.

In 1980, philosopher Luce Irigaray¹ advised us to remember the liquid ground. And taste the saliva in your mouth, also notice. her familiar presence during your silence, how she is forgotten when you speak." More than 40 years later, it is not just the liquid ground in our bodies that we must pay attention to, but also the very fact of breathing itself. Because who is allowed to breathe, and who isn't? In which places has breathing become a deadly act? Breathing has this familiar presence while we're silent, but it is no less essential in order to speak. Atem is a video work that focuses on the act of breathing and transforms it into a landscape created by two bodies. Exhaling, inhaling. This is a landscape of distances and closeness, but also of the most fundamental rhythm of life.

Anleitung für Moonwalk (Anfänger)ㅣ Zeichnung mit Spieluhrmechanismus

Zu sehen ist eine bewegte Anleitung für Moonwalk, – gezeichnet. Die Arbeit bezieht sich auf meine vorhergehende Arbeit ‚the still walker-Moonwalk‘, in der ein Super8 Film mich selbst zeigt, wie ich den Moonwalk tanze. Zwar hatte ich keine Erfahrung bishe was professionalen Tanz betrifft, aber habe ich als Amateurin mir den Moonwalk für das performative Video über Youtube-Tutorial gelernt und trainiert. Diese Lernmethode übersetze ich wieder in die Arbeit als eine bewegte Anleitung. Die Anleitung rotiert immer weiter und ihre regelmäßigen Löcher produzieren Sound, – den Bass Part von Billie Jean.

I have been living in Vienna Since 2012. Since then I observe the city and my immediate living space. Vienna is a compact city unlike Bremen, my former college town, as well as my home town Seoul. That fascinated me. through out this years public transport have become behacle for my observation

The video has documented the matufacturing processe of the installations, however, this is not a documentary. The video establishes the connection between the two installations.  It also shows the archives of my fastination. In the Production, while the analog film mechanism is played over the time, the performer’s body plays a central role.

Seit 2012 lebe in Wien. Seit dieser Zeit beobachte ich die Stadt und meinen unmittelbaren Wohnraum. Wien ist im Gegensatz zu Bremen, meiner ehemaligen Studienstadt und meiner Heimatstadt Seoul sehr kompakt und

übersichtlich. Das hat mich fasziniert. Mein Fortbewegungsmittel waren all die Jahre die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel, mit Hilfe derer ich die Stadt betrachten gelernt habe.

Das Video zeigt eine Herstellung der Installation, in die diese Form der Betrachtung ich übertragen habe – mit Hilfe des analogen Films und der Photoschleife mit Spieluhr. Beide Techniken erzeugen eine rotierende Bewegung, die aber am Stand diesen rotierenden Mechanismus ausübt.

Aber das Video ist keine Dokumentation obwohl sie die Herstellung dokumentiert. Das Video stellt die Verbindung zu den anderen beiden Teilen her – wir sehen die Herstellungsprozesse sowie Szenen, die wie Notizen zum Thema wirken. Das Thema der analogen Bewegung wird mehrere Male durchgespielt, der Körper spielt dabei eine zentrale Rolle.
