LinkedIn Learning Experience
The LinkedIn project was probably one of the easier projects for me due to the fact that I had already created a LinkedIn profile for another one of my classes. But through this class I was able to really see the benefit of having a profile, especially when it is set up the way we had to for this class. When we created our LinkedIn profiles we had to make sure that they were professional and included all of the information that the professor found would benefit us the most. This information included:
Summary statement
Professional picture
Education
Work experiences
Volunteer work if any
Skills that we thought would be good for future employers to know about
Awards/Certificates
And set our profile up to be professional looking and orderly
At first I saw this project as just another class assignment, but I later realized that it actually benefited me more than I was expecting. Within two weeks of uploading my profile and connecting with multiple people and groups, I had an offer to interview for a company in Minneapolis. He wrote "Michaela, Thanks for connecting. You have a fascinating background. What languages do you speak, I am curious?" (Norberto Moran, RICP®). This was such an amazing surprise for me because I was not expecting it at all. This just goes to show how important and beneficial a good LinkedIn profile can be! That would have to be what I enjoyed the most about this project; the outcome it had for me.
I found it difficult to write my summary statement. This was difficult for me because I wanted it to have all of the information in it that I thought was crucial, but I didn't want it to be too lengthy or come off as me boasting. I think that I managed to write one that was perfect for what I was looking to create!
What worked out the best for me with this assignment is that it proved almost immediately that having a good professional LinkedIn profile would have great benefits for me. Going into it my aim was just to complete the assignment the way I needed to in order to get a good grade, but it ended up being so much more meaningful and important.
Next time I think I want to spend more time connecting with people and building relationships and connections. I am most definitely going to keep my profile and continue to use LinkedIn. Even though I have a solid job that I love, in the future it will be so beneficial for me to turn to LinkedIn to land jobs, internships or other experience.

Twitter Reflection
Now that the Twitter assignment is over, I can reflect on what I did and determine the outcome that this project had on me. This assignment was not necessarily a difficult assignment, it was one that needed to be remembered and had a lot of little parts to it. Overall this assignment was a fun one and I think I learnt a lot from doing it.
First I researched Twitter and read/watched all of the files that the professor recommended. I did this because I wanted to make sure that I was educated on the history, functionality, and what the most efficient way to do this project would be. Through my research I learnt a lot of tricks and important information that I needed to note and remember throughout the semester while working on this project. Next I created my Twitter account; this was my favorite part of the assignment. I got to choose a profile picture, my background colors, and edit my profile the way I wanted it. I made sure to add a summary about me so that followers and those who I follow knew a bit about who I am.
Once the account was created I started tweeting as much as I felt necessary. I had to make sure that I contributed to the #IM260 discussions as well as created at least thirty of my own professional tweets. This was exciting because it forced me to practice communicating professionally, and it was a nice outsource to share information on my days/life.
The part that I enjoyed most about this assignment was reading all of the other tweets that my classmates had. I was able to view some of their tweets when they used the hashtag IM260. This was fun for me because I was able to communicate back with them and see where they were on projects and assignments. It was a nice way to keep track of what others were completing and where I should be.
I found it difficult to constantly remember to go and tweet throughout the semester. Between work, classes, and other assignments/projects, it’s hard to remember something as small as sending out a tweet. Even though I managed to get the thirty professional tweets and contribute to the hashtags, I struggled to tweet as much as I thought I would.
I think what worked out the best was setting my twitter up to be a professional site. Choosing my layout, background, picture, writing my summer, etc. was a lot of fun and after watching and reading all of the handouts I was able to create what I thought was a good Twitter profile. I also think that having the student’s use the class hashtag was a good idea so that we could all read other classmates tweets and get ideas and stay on track with our progress.
Next time I think I would try and spend more time browsing the site. I didn’t have much time to search for hashtags and view companies/individual twitter accounts as I would have liked to. I think for the future I want to use that option more. I think Twitter is a great source to follow your favorite people and business in order to keep up with them, I didn’t get to utilize that as much as I should have.

Digital Media and Society
Originally people had to physically advertise themselves and their companies to find the right employment, or employee for themselves or their company. Individuals would spend a large amount of time going from business to business handing in resumes, picking up applications, and asking employers about potential openings. As you can imagine this process was very time consuming and for most people they would only get interviewed for one or two of the positions they applied for. This process was too time consuming for the outcome considering the outcome.
Once technology and digital media started to become more and more popular, it was so much easier for companies and people themselves to advertise their needs. For a company when they are going through a hiring phase they can easily turn to social media to get the word out. Instead of paying money to create flyers, billboards, and other forms of advertisement, businesses can simply upload the information to a digital media site where naturally the information will spread through reposts, likes, and comments. Another great benefit for companies is that they can always have access to the applications of prior individuals. Because the applicants apply online and submit their resumes and cover letters electronically, they are always saved for the business to look back on if they need to.
For those who are seeking employment, digital media has become an enormous benefit for them. The time that used to be spent going from place to place applying for positons, they simply go online, apply through the company’s website and submit all the additional documents at the same time. They can then spend their time perfecting their resumes, preparing for interviews, and other tasks that have a higher benefit for their time.
Our professor gave us the link to a website that has an interactive resume that the user can go through to learn important information about creating the perfect resume. They can see all the most important aspects of a resume as well as what specifically to include for each section. I found that this site was beneficial and I like that the website was interactive. I prefer to learn through games or another form of interactive learning.

Technology Disconnect; reflections
The hardest device for me to give up was my cell phone. In my initial blog I assumed that the hardest device to give up would be my TV due to the fact that I was doing my 24 hour disconnect on a weekend day when I typically would have spent the day watching my TV shows. Giving up my phone was by far the hardest however. Not being able to check my social media sites or check my messages/emails was extremely stressful. I’m very consistent with responding back to people very fast and checking my social media notifications right away. So not knowing what was going on my phone was the hardest aspect of this project.
Another aspect that was really difficult was the lack of ability to communicate through technology. For example, I live in an apartment complex where I cannot “buzz people up”, I have to physically go down stairs to the lobby and let them in. My boyfriend decided to come up for the day to spend a technology free day with me, and being able to communicate with him was impossible! We had set an approximate time on when he would be getting to my apartment, but because of his work he never knows the exact time he will be getting off each day. So there was no telling when he would actually arrive. I had to sit by the window of my apartment and keep checking out the window in order to determine when he would arrive. Not being able to communicate with people that weren’t physically with me made this project very difficult for me.
The most surprising thing about this experience was how much this disconnect helped me focus on what was happening around me. I was able to really take in my surroundings, I didn’t miss any part of the conversations that were going on around me and I wasn’t ever distracted. When someone is constantly on their phone and they’re in a social setting they tend to miss out on the real life conversations and things that are going on around them. I was surprised by how annoying it is when those around me are periodically on their phone and had to ask me to repeat myself or explain a situation that they didn’t witness due to being distracted. I’m usually that person who’s always on their phone, so I was surprised by how annoying it can be.
The disconnection was most difficult for my mother of course! She likes to hear from me at least once daily to make sure “I’m safe and doing okay.” Even though I gave her advance warning that I wouldn’t be able to use any technology for that day, she still said it stressed her out that I wasn’t able to text her back. It was also difficult for my boyfriend when he was on his way to my apartment and he wasn’t able to let me know.
Overall the assignment was interesting and I fell as though I learnt a good amount. I realized how much we rely on technology and how it almost is necessary to use in our everyday lives. It makes life so much more simple in a lot of aspects, but it can also can have a lot of negative aspects. I don’t think I’ll ever purposefully go 24 hours again without being able to use technology, but I do want to start using my phone a lot less often. I want to live in the now and focus on what is going on around me and not be so obsessed with the digital world.

For this assignment, I started off with creating ten survey questions that were directly related to my topic, and that I thought would give me the information I needed. I spent a week creating the ten survey questions and then distributed them to two individuals before mass distribution. I distributed the survey to my sister and a close friend/coworker of mine to get their honest opinion. After receiving their feedback, I went back to the survey and decided which of their tips and suggestions I wanted to use. The main negative feedback I received was basic grammar and spelling mistakes as well as ways to better order the questions to make the most sense.
After going over the survey I decided it was time to distribute the survey through enough means that way I could get as many responses as I could. I used Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, word of mouth, and email to distribute the link. Within a few days I had enough survey responses so that I could begin my analysis of the information and begin creating my infographic.
I decided to write up my analysis/summary first so that it would be easier for me to understand the data which would help me when creating my infographic. I then took that information and began the infographic process, which was the most fun part of this assignment. I am not the most creative person in the world, but I do enjoy organizing information and attempting to be creative. I liked the website that we used to create the info graphs, I found it to be easy to understand and had a lot of options for decorating the data.
The most difficult part of this assignment was the distribution. Most of my respondents were family members and friends that I had to basically beg to take the time to complete the survey. I wasn’t surprised by this because I went in to it knowing that people don’t enjoy taking surveys especially when they are busy with other things. This made it difficult for me because I needed enough respondents so that I could analyze the data.
I feel as though I understood the assignment and I did a good job at completing each portion. I think what worked best for me was creating the questions and guaranteeing they were related with my topic. It didn’t take me long to come up with the questions and create the survey for distribution. The analysis of the data also worked out well for me, I enjoyed going through the responses and none of the questions resulted in results that were confusing or too complicated for me to analyze.
I think that if I had to re distribute this survey I would include a question along the lines of “how old are you” or “do you have a relationship with your coworkers outside of work”. I think figuring out the ages of the respondents and what part of their career they’re in would have helped me analyze the data. Some of the answers I received were not what I was expecting, and I believe knowing the age of the respondents would have helped me.

For this project I plan on creating ten survey questions that are directly related to my research topic. The questions I will ask are going to help me analyze personal opinions and outlooks on the effects that social media has on their hiring experiences and work habits. By creating and distributing this survey I will be gaining real life personal experiences which is beneficial to my research paper. I believe that conducting research and reading articles is helpful and a great source in finding information on a topic. Another extremely beneficial resource is asking employees directly about their experiences with social media during their hiring process; this will allow me to gain a different perspective.
I believe that I will get a lot of responses that prove social media to be a big distraction for employees while they are at work. I also believe I will find people responding that Facebook is the most common source to get information on people. I am really interested to see if people have their full legal name as their names on social media, or if they change part of it in order to avoid employers or others from looking them up. I also am curious to see what percentage of people regularly check their profiles for “inappropriate” posts and delete them before employers/supervisors see them. I think that a lot of the respondents are going to say that they regularly add coworkers on social media but do not add supervisors or their boss.
I am actually really interested to see the results on my survey, I think that the questions are going to help me with my paper. I also think that by using this survey I will better understand the benefits of using online surveys vs. in person surveys. For work I have often had to complete surveys and complete online questioners, but I have never personally had to make and distribute one. I am excited to see how many respondents I get and how people feel about the survey.

Mind Tools
Recently teachers have begun pushing the idea that students should be thinking more and be able to be accountable for their thinking. Instead of asking questions where the students simply answer without actual deep thinking students aren’t being able to actually think for themselves. A great way to force students to think this way is by asking them to share examples or more detail to their answer. The student will then have to think past the text book answer and be able to have your own thought up answer.
The most important and beneficial tool to help students learn this style of thinking is through their teachers. Teachers starting all the way in grade school through high school should help promote students to think for themselves and have their own thought up examples. This has been shown to make the most impact in the student’s futures, allowing them to naturally think this way.

Research Project progress report
I have chosen to research and write my paper on the effects that social media has on businesses hiring process. Social media is such a huge part of our daily lives and is a great source to gather copious amounts of information on a person. Not only are you able to post things on your social media profile, but people can tag you in posts as well as share posts to you; all of which shows up on your profile. I am interested to see how your social media profile and activity can affect your chances of being hired with a company. The other question I want to research is once you have a job, how does your activity and profile on social media affect your safety in that position. Because social media is such a big part of my life and I am an active user on multiple sites this information directly affects me. If social media can cause negative effects on my hiring chances or maintaining my job position, I want to be aware of that.
So far the research process has been rather simple and smooth. I have not had too many road blocks or issues which is great! I am using mostly sources from the online library database and I have found that the information that is available on there is extremely useful. I haven’t had too much difficulty finding the answers that I am wanting to answer and I have been able to find a lot of great sources and quotes.
From the sources and research that I have done so far, I have learnt a lot of interesting statistics and facts about the link between social media and the hiring process. I originally could come up with a lot of negative effects however through my research I have been able to learn about an equal amount of positive effects. I also found one article that I read about how using social media at the workplace for those who are the medical field can cause a lot of security and privacy breaches. This article was the most interesting for me because I never thought about it like that before. If you are using social media to rant about your day at work or share a work experience you could accidentally share information about a patient or share information about the hospital that would break the rules and regulations for that job.
The research side of this project is going well, the actual writing of the paper is off to a rocky start. I have already written my outline and found all the sources I want to use for this project, now I just need to begin the writing process. I am not the best when it comes to papers so I have been somewhat hesitant to start.

Google; Wisdom Topic
Google is a search engine that allows user to look up almost anything and everything that they want. You can also look up google maps where you can search for places around the world as well as get directions from one place to another. Google images allows you to search for something and then google images will display images that are closely related to your search. There are other categories such as video, news, books, shopping and flights.
Originally google was not as complex as it is today, not only being the name difference, but the amount of websites and databases that it searched was a lot less. Google maps, flights, books etc. were not always options as categories when using the google search engine, these became available periodically as their need become evident. Google also has also more recently begun creating and distributing apps that can be accessed, such as google calendar.

Initial Post - Research Project
Social media is believed to have a huge influence in businesses around the world. Businesses will use forms of social media to promote their business as well as update customers, investors and the public in general on any changes, events or promotion that this business has. Before beginning this project that is basically all I know as far as how a business can use social media to better themselves and promote the business.
A few questions that I want to answer through this project are:
1. How much has the use of social media among companies grown?
Technology is continuously advancing and it’s crucial to be able to stay up to date with these changes. I want to learn if the use of social media within a company has grown immensely the past few years, or if there are still a lot of companies who refuse to make the adaption.
2. How was the job market affected as social media becomes more popular to a business.
With the growth of social media within a business, does this help the job market grow and new positions are becoming available? Or is social media taking over current jobs and causing people to be without a job? With this question I want to research and discover if social media has a positive, negative or no effect on the job market.
3. What are some of the most useful/common ways a business uses social media?
Not only do I want to discover which social media sites are most common for businesses, I want to also learn how they use social media in order for it to be most efficient.
4. Did revenue for a company change when they started using social media?
I want to be able to find data to show the difference of revenue for businesses before they started using social media, and after. I want to determine if social media has impacted their revenues for the better or if it has brought their revenue down.
I’m very interested in this project and doing the research. I am curious to determine the effects that social media has on a business and what positive and negatives outcomes social media has brought. I plan to do most of my research through the St. Cloud University library as well as interview one or two managers or business owners locally.

Twitter- Pro. Organizations
The purpose of a professional organization or professional learning community is to keep people up to date on changes, communicate among each other, and open doors for those involved. These communities and organizations are a great way for people to learn and grow through helping one another and sharing experiences and knowledge.
Wells Fargo Banking; @WellsFargo; https://www.wellsfargo.com/; This company is one that I really hope to one day be apart of. I have always wanted to work in a bank and I personally use Wells Fargo for just about all my banking needs.
Saudi Aramco; @Saudi_Aramco; http://www.saudiaramco.com/en/home.html; Saudi Aramco is the company where my father is currently working. He has been working there for the past fifteen years, this is also where I grew up, within the company walls. This is a company that I might potentially want to work for in my future. I also want to stay up to date on their changes and news because it directly might affect my father and family.
Financial Times; @ftfinancenews; https://www.ft.com/; This is an organization that I want to follow because it is a great source of news, updates and just good knowledge of the finance world. As a finance major it is important to stay up to date and understand what is going on in the finance world.
Overall I hope to gain insight and as much knowledge about each company that I can. I want to stay connected and up to date on any changes, promotions and events that may go on.

For this project we have to create a twitter account and ensure that it is used to write professional tweets throughout the semester. I will create my account and make sure that I tweet at least a few times a week. I think that this project is actually very helpful for a few reasons.
In today’s world social media is used constantly in order to promote your company/service, stay up to date with trends and the news, as well as to connect with others who have similar interests as you. Being able to understand Twitter, navigate it easily and portray myself in a professional manner is going to prepare me for the day that I am in my career and will need to use such sites on a regular basis.
I want to follow as many accounts as I can that are going to help me learn about the career that I am interested in going into. I am majoring in finance and want to make sure that I do everything possible to stay up to date on financial trends and the companies that are within the finance world.
I want to do everything I can to ensure that upon completion of my degree I will be able to find the perfect position at a company for me. Using Twitter I might be able to find possible job openings or positions that might fit me. It may also help me understand even more about the job that I will be doing once I graduate. Twitter will help me connect with people in my area who could help me find internships or job opportunities, building connections is so important when applying and interviewing for potential jobs.

For this project I will make sure that I complete the 24 hour disconnect during a day when I am fully prepared. I work at a technology help desk at my university, so in order for me to fully complete this project I have to make sure that it is on a day that I am not scheduled to work. I need to make sure to let all of my friends and family know in advance that I will not be using my phone/email throughout that day and if it is an emergency they needed to contact my boyfriend directly.
At first I was really nervous to be honest. I will admit that I am the type of person who is constantly checking their phone for new messages, emails, social media notifications etc. I don’t go more than an hour without doing something on my phone. I typically will use the weekend to catch up on any new movies that have been released and my TV shows that I follow. Having an entire day in the middle of winter where I can’t watch any TV is going to be the device that is hardest to give up.
The easiest device that I will have to give up will be my laptop. I mainly only use my laptop for homework, research or replying to long emails. Going an entire day where I won’t be able to do homework isn’t going to be the worst thing in the world!
I think the easiest part of the disconnect is going to be the evening. MY roommates and I are going to invite a few of our girlfriends and host a fun girl’s night. We bought some card games including cards against humanity; one of my favorites. Being around people that I would typically be using my phone to contact is going to make this a lot easier. It’ll also give us a chance to focus on each other, the conversations and the real world instead of what is going on with our phones.
What’s going to be the most stressful and difficult is the fact that I hate not responding to people within an hour of their call, message or email. I hate having notifications that I have not looked at or responded to, it actually makes me stress. I want to make sure that I am always in the loop and updated on what my friends and family are doing, and not being able to be a part of that for the day will cause me stress I am sure!
I’m excited about this project to an extent. I am nervous because I don’t want to be out of the loop and not know what is going on with my phone, however it’s going to be really exciting to see what an entire day with no technology is going to be like. I can’t remember the last time I went more than a few hours with absolutely no technology, so this will be really interesting. I’m exciting to see what is most difficult about this project, and what is going to be the easiest.

About me :)
My name is Michaela, I am very content with my current choice of major which is Finance. Finance almost runs through my blood, my father works in the finance department of one of the worlds biggest companies; Saudi Aramco. My uncle is a well know CPA in the UK, another uncle of mine recently relocated to Australia to work for a very well known financial advising company. The list goes on and on.
I am taking Digital Media in order to widen my knowledge on technology in the work place, social media platforms and how they can benefit an individual, as well as how to use technology to widen my knowledge of the business/finance world.
Technology is a huge aspect of most companies in today’s society, and digital media is a large part of why. In order to promote your company, product or your self, the best way is through social media. In order to find the latest updates on current events, the best resource is: social media. Technology is becoming more and more advanced and staying up to date is critical in succeeding in your work place. This course hopefully will help me prepare for what I will be using in the future within my career.
I will use this blog to document my journey through this course. I’ll be able to look back at this blog in the future and get ideas and tips on how digital media may be able to benefit me. I’ll also use this blog to document my experiences with the course, what tools I find useful in succeeding in this course, as well as what about this course I find most valuable and will want to take with me into my career.
This is my very first blog post.
And I cannot wait for many more to come!
