It's crazy how when Saints Row was in its glory days, it was deemed a "GTA clone" and frowned upon. I grew up on GTA. That's the ONLY reason I even wanted to play Saints Row 2. Because it reminded me of what I already was accustomed to,and it turned out to be really fun. Like, what's wrong with a game being inspired by another game or series and making their own innovation in the process?
#something about individualistic focus and a review obsession with 'innovation' in games#you'll hear all kinds of parrotted complaints from 'bad graphics' to 'xyz clone' and most annoying#'walking simulator' as if every game isnt a bit of walking back and forth monotonously no matter the genre#i'll be honest i'd rather be known as a dev of a 'gta clone' than the 'dildo bat game'#but maybe my dignity and pride comes from a different place than the last few teams working on saints row#i'll never understand why gta clone was an insult but i'll further never understand why the answer to changing that#was to keep the ip but change the entire premise and execution of the atmosphere?#the narrative also took a big change; going from cinematically building the enemies' through cutscenes without the protagonist#and having side activities with minor cutscenes that helped develop the feeling of the town/city#to having little to none of that in 3 and 4? and a continuation of that absence in 2022??#i dunno i dunno i think of all the compromises#i wish we had more fleshed out npcs to give a shit about if we wanted to 'return to roots'#because the narratives were the most fun part of older gta and saints row games both!#i liked the stories so much i actually made fan art; something I am not keen to do these days#i just don't feel the love the same way; not that more simple stories and characters are bad#or that sticking to comedy and lighthearted fun is a crime#but it's not my thing and nothing i'd dedicate hours drawing to personally; i like a different vibe and i'll always miss it#i really wanted to make art for 2022 i wish i didn't feel like i had no ideas by the halfway point still#whereas for 1 and 2 i had so many ideas i actually couldnt figure out how to draw them all#saints row isnt a special series for that though; something about the change in game development has killed my inspiration#it feels like the writing lost a lot of heart#i want to like it but the writing only touches the surface of anything it explores#and leaves me waiting for the lake to thaw but really the lake was a puddle and i saw the bottom from the start#and that as an artist leaves me feeling a bit hollow by the end#which let me clarify i dont think saints row 1 or 2 are particularly deep- but they have a lot of interlinked crumbs that connect it#you hear npcs discuss your companions and you see your enemies plot without you and you play stories that come back in the next game#that stuff all feels small and silly and a lot of people miss it#but it sticks with the players who want to care and want to explore the game to the fullest it rewards them for looking#it keeps this tiny bit of immersion going the whole time you're playing dress up or idly shooting the open world or#honestly just hopping into an old save to escape thinking about the real world & coming to a small but furnished fictional one for an hour

the tagline for srr was literally "Self Made" so i think someone during the concepting phase or smth definitely had an issue with how the original Saints weren't created by the player. but they didn't seem to sacrifice much more thought to it beyond that, video games are all about appearance after all there's nothing going on under the surface
#huge part of of problem with it too#like i really want to engage with the characters#but there is just NOTHING there after their initial mission#there's no reason to start this gang in this universe#especially not a particularly admirable or interesting one#the enemies are devoid of any depth or development to give us any inkling of thought#anything you like about sr22's story was more than likely self invented in your head#it won't be realised on the screen#you can't see it happen or be brought up in future titles or events by the company#ironically trying to appeal to the idea of a fully fan made gang made it an empty game#it would be very difficult to pitch a sequel to this one because there's nothing to take out or go on#and while i dont think every good game needs a sequel anyway; companies prefer it#and i think the developers likely wanted to write/design more but i don't know and i don't know if we ever will#i feel like there was less love and less passion for this one allowed#it was about the fear not selling the absurdity of 3/4 would mean a commerical failure#and not selling the seriousness and groundability of 1/2 would mean they NEVER hear the end of it#and the compromise was both worst outcomes i guess#everyone lukewarmly had a lot of mild disappointment and it still led to the company closing again#and i just don't know if I can ever feel good about it#It was definitely a company i sincerely wanted to work for at one point#and while i didnt like 3 at all and 4 was only okay to me#i did enjoy agents of mayhem and didn't think sr22 couldnt lead to other ips that saw success#but that just isnt how the game development process goes anymore#no matter how much you wanna do; the depth gets cut; the levels and missions and political commentary gets trimmed#thinking often of the red faction exploration thing in sr22 about the workers rights#side mission activity thing entirely avoidable and difficult to want to sit through because the rest of the game is more high energy#but it could have been more than that. there could have been more for that#and then- you make this compromise of a game regardless of whatever the original goal was or if you did achieve your goals#and regardless of how well it sells and how much it is praised or hated#you'll see a portion or the whole development team get shafted. layoffs every time. live update. single player. coop. pvp. etc. always.

obviously there's nothing wrong with it there's no wrong way to enjoy the games but seeing these uhh... communal effort sr blogs turn into yet another one of those "tell me about your original character (as in your Boss)" things always makes me feel so left out because i just don't approach the games from that angle. it's like having a gta fandom blog with asks like "what is your CJ's relationship with his family like" or "where is your Carl from". "does your CJ wear green"
#yeah while of course i muse original ideas idly if i play the game enough#i usually let my customisable characters stick incredibly close to canon and really only do anything special for art purposes#it's just not my style i guess to develop so much for a character in a universe i didnt create#i always find it neat to see and love seeing people talk about their ideas#but i dont really feel like i can or want to contribute to oc headcanon topics as i really only have one or two and they come directly#from canon content in the game like throwaway voicelines or an unenterable building or something silly and minor#i think though in general i enjoy games more when i engage less with others who're REALLY passionate about their oc-focused interpretations#and that's genuinely just how i enjoy it. for me i'm usually invested in the side characters and development process#and neither mine nor the community's popular methods of enjoying it are better or worse! but different for sure!#i think that is also why the newest saints row and 3/4 were harder for me to draw for; there was a lot less focus on developing the#cast both protagonists and npcs (enemies & allies both) so there was less for me to run with for art#but i still have things I like in those games; just not anything that inspires me personally#that being said i'm colour blind (blue/yellow#so i really dont see purple or even green correctly which makes missions in both gta and sr hilariously difficult at times#i'm pretty sure my protagonist wears grey/brown/black and like a single gang coloured undershirt i usually pick with help#i recall in many games they named the colours which helped! but i also wear a lot of completely unrepped clothes#because. it's a fucking game. after a point you have played it 50+ times and deserve to use the rest of the assets man free yourself#no one's gonna come find you in your gang video game because you wore pink or maroon for a cutscene; we have irl problems to invest in#let yourself and others pick what they want in a game and if you so choose to wear the assigned immersion colour good on you!

I wont lie; i expected cancer to take up way less of my life, which was MY BAD I GUESS.
I have had my surgery and am in recovery stage now, so big hopes I can get back to art and organising the last few social media I have so it reaches the people who still want to see it!
Wishing you all good food and high health until then!
#update#oh yeah i lowkey forgot to even update#i had intestinal cancer! yippee#hopefully gone now! waiting on biopsy for that#other screenings for intestinal issues came back impressively healthy#so next i think is ruling out other intestinal issues or catching them#and checking in on my stomach/throat health#i'm in physical therapy now for some of the other health issues and fighting insurance on both psych evals and MRIs for my spine 🙃#but i can for the most part draw a little more now and i did not forget about saints row or gta

I got screened for a cancer and found a plethora of health issues that have taken up essentially all my time outside of my current commissions.
I'm real sorry the GTA and new SR art has been delayed this long, but it is for a good cause! I am applying for surgery and more scans to assess treatment options to recover my health as soon as possible!
It has been very scary, but I wish to heal and return to art very soon so I am not giving up! But I do need a little bit more time before I set up some fun stuff.
#at first it was just my art laptop suffering BSOD when i used CSP#i fixed that and was then handling memory allocation concerns and trying to prevent further issues#then my pc died and i had to take emergency commissions to replace some parts so i can use it again#i have it hooked up to a tv right now because I replaced the graphics card first LMAO#and I can't read my tv but it allows me to do work calls and try to play dnd on the saturday#i have been working saturdays even though it is against my beliefs but god will forgive me#the genocide affected my family personally recently and there was some distress about it#i think we'll genuinely have a lot going on for a while of course#but i was working strong on my hobbies and health until I expressed some trouble breathing and we noticed a growth in my neck#that tumour is not malignant so we are going to leave it for now because my blood work revealed an insane amount of problems later#confirmed or countered at the ER depending on the test LMAO so much came up at the ER#they wanted to do surgery on me that day but because some scans conflicted they could not approve me#I'm now going to get more scans from a specialist for the most immediate issue#the other tumours they found they THINK are noncancerous as well!#but I have some dysfunctional organs they want to keep a close eye on and one not working at all#not saints row#very personal update which i am sorry about#it feels important to say in case the doc is right about how dangerous this all is#i dont want to just disappear with no words if it's the worst#but It will not be that way if i can help it

I'm sorry but if you genuinely think SR2 patch potentially being cancelled is more upsetting than 200 devs who put their passion into the series losing their jobs, idk what to tell ya. These are real people who lost jobs over executives fucking up and yall have no sympathy towards the real people making products and only care about being specifically pandered to
#yeah like dont get me wrong of course everyone wanted new content#but real people literally lost their livliehoods#people we've seen in interviews and q&as and youtube videos they made to share the work process with us#we dont know them but they arent just faceless workers either#you have had a lot of time to sympathise and understand the developers really cared about what they were doing even if#they made games that went different directions than the audience wanted#i know a lot of people hated agents or mayhem but when they talked about being excited about it; i got excited and bought it#people who love making games are the ones i wanna buy games from#even if i miss their old titles and wish i could have more#supporting them and knowing they're compensated for their work matters more genuinely#you can be upset about both and should i think be mindful of the irl ramifications#outside yourself when talking about 'the worst' parts of tragic situations#it's hard to cover all your bases on an internet post i know but yeah i saw the post i think is in question#and assumed it had to be someone young writing it#because that kind of self centred vent usually comes from a lack of consideration outside of a small worldview- like still growing up

Oh yeah feel free to reply anytime! I also originally used baker in 3 and 4 and i think for the first couple runs it was fine but i don't think his delivery compares or excels to the second game options for sure; definitely for the lack of variety in sound (and in my opinion the writing caused a lot of suffering to all voice options) compared to the shoes he was now filling.
It felt worse to have the zombie option in place of a hispanic option even if for some reason Mendoza wasn't available. A sort of backhand led response to wanting a voice, even if unintentional by the devs.
Ignoring his lack of integrity even, while he has a solid way of voice acting- Baker is a character actor, and i personally lose immersion when someone does the same exact character every time, especially in roles i perceive to be very different from how they're playing them! This isn't an issue for everyone and I don't think that makes liking him a bad opinion to have, for sure he appeals to people or he wouldn't have been a safe choice for the 'game to save the company'!
is it just me or was bakerboss in srtt and sriv really similar to Kenn Michael's Boss in both delivery and content. like whitewashed male boss 2. i haven't used the bakerboss voice in years but whenever i listen to male boss 2 lines in sr2 he keeps saying stuff that's so freaking close to Baker's delivery and it's like what was even the point of ditching Mendoza for that shit
#i have so many thoughts about the ironic gentrification of crime media romantisation#and how the people who made these games exist kind of wanted to wash the diversity out of them to make them safe to sell#and how that is a sort of inherent betrayal to the source material irl and the original audience#they were always ashamed of 1&2 and you can shake it off as being because of the gta clone bits#but i also think they genuinely struggled on a company level to sell the concept of poc crime being something people will buy after 2010#people always want 'exotic' merchandise but not with the 'exotic' identity attached

#it's always valid to hate troy baker#i'll never forget how he wanted to push ai voice acting because he would be unaffected by it negatively#whereas he ignored and pushed back against so much of the valid points other actors and his fans made#not gonna lie i haven't liked or hated his work largely over the years but the more i know about him#the less i like his generic and repetive roles in games#losing mendoza lost my love for future SR games#i still feel incredibly at home when i hear his voice in 2 and it has been HOW many years#it is probably my favourite protagonist voice in maybe ANY game i wont lie

the sr2 writing team didn't need to pour such an incomprehensible amount of effort into these "generic" personas but by fuck they did it anyways. this game is so good

i haven't touched sriv in years but why did Shaundi's nightmare sim have Insane in the Brain as bg music. i don't know music very well in general but how is it relevant to anything, it's 90s hip hop, it doesn't fit either of the characters the sim features. VC was literally a DJ of sr2 GenX, wouldn't it have made more sense to pick something emo or pop punk instead or am i just stupid
#also makes me wonder even more if the plane was supposed to be a part of sriv boss' nightmare sim originally#<- op tag#yeah i constantly think about how the plane makes more sense for the boss to have as a nightmare#or even the boat i GUESS#but the plane they left their best friend and closest companion?#whether people consider them romantically entangled by 4; it is always evident Gat is the closest to Boss in the series#why would their nightmare not be the moment they left their best friend to die?#sr2 makes a few jokes about boss being traumatised by the boat ordeal#but i feel like sr3 and sr4 never captured the next biggest tragedy in their life#which for me personally is a huge letdown and why i can't really enjoy the plots#i hate games that dismiss and belittle the protagonist; dismissing them to useless wrecking ball stand-ins#which yeah boss has always been a chaotic destruction pawn- they also used to get treated like a person by the narrative#they used to get credit for their impact and when someone else took credit that was part of the plot and not an overdone throwaway joke#the nightmare we get is not only incredibly boring and annoying to play#it also reduces the character to nothing in terms of depth and emotional connection to both the narrative and the audience#suitable for adults uncomfortable with serious and mature themes but not anyone following the story to that point#it makes me so depressed every time i think about how close they could have been to making 3 and 4 interesting games#like the plots and enemies are DREADFULLY dull but even they could have been memorable if they had more depth

i wanna highlight some of my fave personas you can find in Stilwater. like this Saint persona who's getting married to his girlfriend. he shares his voice actor with Miguel from sr1 and refers to the Boss only in spanish (el Jefe). he's a very pleasant guy, really loves his girlfriend, and is a diehard Saint who really looks up to Boss and Johnny
"Looks like I'm gonna be getting married soon, Jefe! You wanna come to my wedding?"
"Thanks to the Saints pretty soon I'll have enough cash to buy my girlfriend that ring she keeps hinting at."
(recruited) "I can't wait to tell my girl that I got to run with el Jefe!"
(burger) "This is the same stuff el Jefe's always eating so it must not be too bad."
(Shivington fires reaction) "My girl says she believes we caused that fire by accident, but sometimes I wonder if she really means it..."
"Ultor may have more guns and money, but we have more heart."
"With you and Johnny leading the way those other gangs don't stand a chance!"
(observing Boss getting drunk) "Careful man! We need you sober if some kinda shit comes down!"
#saints row#sr2 voice clips#saints row 2#i knew exactly which guy you meant before i played the audio#he's such a fun character to have#i love the quiet continuity in so many minor voicelines#you're rewarded for listening
