TX to FL

Traveling back to FL has had some ups and downs. I’ve been learning to roll with circumstances more. Sometimes you get to a venue and no one promoted the show and the local bands don’t show up. Sometimes you play to 10 people and are filled with so much joy. Sometimes you spend an extra day in Houston. Sometimes you forget to follow up and confirm the show. Sometimes you forget that you have a six hour drive. Sometimes you get fancy food with friends in NOLA. Sometimes you play a Thursday night in Pensacola and it feels like a Saturday and everyone is glowing and everything is amazing. Sometimes you forget about time zones. Sometimes you play in the city you were born in with all your friends. Sometimes you can’t find your passport. Sometimes you say a prayer and it gets answered. Sometimes it won’t be. Sometimes you get to sing by yourself in the car. Sometimes you talk on the phone. Sometimes you talk in person. Sometimes other artists remind you of how important it is to be creating something and supporting one another. Sometimes it’s lonely. Sometimes it’s home. Sometimes things are really easy. Sometimes you hustle and nothing comes to fruition. I’m learning the importance of perseverance.

If any of them are playing in your city, check them out. You won’t be disappointed. And any homies I’ve forgotten to mention, keep going out there and playing shows. You’re radical and you’re inspiring and you’re important. Stay awesome forever. I’ll be updating with some of the music that has been keeping me sane on the road. The weather in Texas has been hovering at a pretty consistent 100º F. I think it’s safe to call that blistering heat. Maybe I can call it blistering if Tuesday is indeed 105º with a Heat Index of 110º. I’m just glad I learned a trick where I can roll down all my windows before getting into my car.

Sitting in the blistering heat of my car, I’ve been listening to tapes and CDs of my incredibly talented friends. I’ve been realizing that a lot of my friends make wonderful, beautiful, amazing, and important art and I really want to be better at recognizing them as often as I can.

In keeping with that sentiment, I’d like to share a song by my friends from Omaha, NE: Calm Fur.

In the future, I’ll get in depth about bands and connections and all the feels. This song is a gem. Put it in a little velvet bag and hold it close on your journeys for the last days of this summer. “Summer Gems.”
