I am spoiling the live action Lilo & Stitch. And I am doing it up front and plainly.

Do not fucking see this movie. Do not waste your money on this. Period.

They made Nani give Lilo up to the American government. They made Nani LEAVE Hawaii and pursue being a marine biologist. They made a native Hawaiian character give up her sibling to pursue a dream that she originally did not have. This is imperialist propaganda at its FINEST.

The original fucking movie is about family staying together. It's about indigenous people being able to stay with each other and stay in their home and be together! That's the whole fucking point! Nani is Lilo's last living relative on her homeland—it is jarring, it is disgusting and disturbing that Nani would not only leave her last blood relative alone, give her up to the very government that is harming native Hawaiians TODAY, but also travel to the "mainland" for her dream!

Not to mention, Nani's actress isn't fucking Hawaiian. She's much paler in photos and real life. They fucking darkened her for this movie.

Don't even get me started on the transgender subtext of Pleakley's "human" disguise from the original movie being completely erased in favor of him being played by a regular ass white man. Jumba doesn't have his accent, they made him more villainous, and his "human" disguise is a non-fat white man—which part of his original joke, I know, is that he was bigger and was more clumsy in the movie because of his size, but to have the main shape of his character completely removed is also fucking weird.

This live action movie is a desecration to the original. I encourage you to not see it, please. Don't give Disney any of your money on this one. Just watch the original. Please just watch the original.

The murder of Catrine da Costa. She was a homeless heroin addict and sex worker in Stockholm. Parts of her remains were found in garbage bags in 1984, her head has never been found and she had to be identified by fingerprints. The murderer will probably never be found because the police dismissed all people who saw her the last days of her life because they got tipped off by the former father-in-law of the forensic pathologist that said pathologist is a weird man who enjoys horror movies and probably murdered his ex-wife (a confirmed suicide). A general practitioner who the pathologist barely knew was then accused of being his accomplice by his ex, who claimed their then one year old daughter had witnessed the two men dismembering Catrine’s body.

It essentially became a witch hunt where the police zeroed in on two random doctors and painted a whole scenario that looked more like a horror movie script than reality because these men were seen as weird by the time (but probably wouldn’t today when we’re more aware of neurodivergent behavior such as autism) and the fact that they enjoyed watching horror movies, which were frowned upon by people back then.

There was zero legitimate evidence that the two doctors had ever even met Catrine da Costa but the case went to court anyway and the media coverage made it look like a clear cut case. People were outraged when the court ruled not guilty and demanded a new trial and that they should bring up the fact that the doctors would occasionally watch horror movies this time.

Though they were found not guilty by the court, they still lost their license to practice, and to this day we can’t even say which date Catrine da Costa was murdered on. The doctors’ lives were ruined and the real monster who murdered and dismembered da Costa was never even held in custody. Because of vindictive former family members and moral panic over accessible horror movies in stores.

SVT (Sweden’s public service television) made a documentary about it recently, and you can read about it on Wikipedia but this is a very short summary.

Horror movies and Dead dove: do not eat doesn’t ruin lives, but the moral panic about these things can.
