I’d agree with you but hoax very much serves as a major fracture of that dynamic imo and a choice to continue believing, the idea that love requires staying through intense hardship and sadness was a huge part of folkmore

hoax is a lot more complicated than people distill it to be, though. she expressly said it contains multiple situations! the sadness and fracture in it is why the love is so connected to the pain, not that it’s a straight story about her relationship.

but also, we need to very very quickly banish the idea that a happy taylor cannot write deeply sad music. it’s an impossible standard to hold her to, and it’s going to cause problems down the line.

I just don’t understand how she can love travis as much as Joe if all the main components of what love is to her doesn’t exist in their relationship. Like it’s too fun and bubbly and laidback to be a serious intense relationship like the one she had with joe. She has always felt that sitting in silence and being depressed with someone is the greatest form of love she can give to another person and she doesn’t do that with travis. There’s no struggle or hardships she has to get thought with him and those are the loves that are real according to her. And then with matty even though it was short lived, she described it as cosmic love and she describes the passion and love she had for him was so strong and intense that she wanted to kill herself when she didn’t have it anymore. Like those two relationships were messy and hard but it was intense and there was a clear sign of passion and wanting another person no matter what. It’s so far opposite of what she has with travis where it’s fun and happy but there’s no intense passion and that need to take things further, she can just exist in the relationship and whatever happens happens. If they get married great but if they break up there’s no love lost and she can move on easily cause that passion she had for matty and joe isn’t there with travis.
