a good ship is always improved by having at least one other random character who is so so fucking mad that the ship is happening and is either seething about it or actively trying to break them up. i see the appeal of "everyone else played matchmaker and they're all cheering to see the ship holding hands!!" but i need at least one character, with any motivation, to be the world's pettiest hater about it come hell or high water. bonus points if the beef is completely onesided and they still get warmly invited to the wedding anyway

The Best Thing That Could Go Wrong
characters ; Yuri Isami, TKDB S/I
summary ; Yuri puts his partner through another medical trial to ease their nausea with unexpected results.
warnings ; emetophobia
word count ; 1,092
“Aha! I’ve finally completed it!”
Yuri’s sudden and loud declaration woke Casey up with a jolt, and they sat up ramrod straight from the position they’d fallen asleep on the autopsy table. Immediately, they felt their joints ache in protest to how they’d been sleeping, but they didn’t have too much time to think about it before Yuri stood before them, a syringe in hand. “Give me your arm,” he demanded suddenly.
Hold on - what’s going on? What did he finish? Where’s Jiro? I swear he was in here before I fell asleep, Casey thought all at once, looking around to see where HAL was to help xem communicate xyr questions. I set him aside earlier while I was working, but HAL should be around here somewhere…
However, from the moment that Casey’s eyes started wandering the room, Yuri began to deduce xyr concerns. “No need for HAL. You’ll be speaking normally and comfortably in just a moment,” Yuri insisted with a confident smirk, bringing attention once again to the syringe in his hand. “I’ve created a new formula to help suppress your nausea. It’s personalized to your body chemistry, so I can guarantee it’ll be my most effective formula yet.”
Oh. A new formula, Casey thought, nodding and giving Yuri their arm. At this point, they were so used to Yuri experimenting with different medications on them that they didn’t even flinch at him administering it. He’d been this way since they met - and after letting Yuri give them enough shots, it didn’t even occur to them to be nervous about it anymore.
After all, xe trusted Yuri. Xe knew how seriously Yuri approached any medical mystery and knew that, when it came to xyr care, there was no one more trustworthy with xyr overall safety.
Yuri wiped their arm down with an alcohol pad before giving them the shot, handing them a small square of gauze to press against the area immediately afterward. He sighed as he looked at their arm. “You still have a slight red line from the bandage adhesive from a few days ago? Clearly, you need something for more sensitive skin. Give me a moment, I have something in mind.”
Casey nodded, holding the gauze to the small puncture wound. It had already stopped bleeding - truly, it had barely even bled in the first place - but Casey knew better than to point that much out to Yuri. He was one of smartest people xe knew, but his logic was often… clouded when it came to xem, and xe knew it.
As Yuri searched through drawers, he started complaining. “Is nothing down here organized anymore? This is ridiculous! How am I supposed to find anything in a timely manner? Jiro should’ve organized these drawers weeks ago! The moment he gets back, I’m making the organization of this lab his top priority!”
While he continued to complain, Casey’s attention was caught by the sight of a tuxedo cat jumping onto the autopsy table. Mistoffelees! Casey thought excitedly, smiling at the sight of the cat that the trio shared between them after xe and Alan had rescued it. The pair had found Mistoffelees - so named after one of Casey’s favorite musicals - as a kitten, hiding under one of the cars Alan worked on. Ever since, Casey had taken care of him in both Vagastrom and Mortkranken. You shouldn’t be playing here right now, you might break something. Come here.
Without stopping to think twice about it, Casey began to sing to make sure Misto stayed out of Yuri’s way. When it came to getting Misto’s attention, xe always sang the same song.
“Oh! Well, I never! Was there ever a cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffelees?”
Misty’s ears perked up at the familiar song and immediately came to Casey’s side, and while they repeated singing the chorus to the song to the kitten. Yuri stopped his search in his tracks, turning around to face Casey, who was entirely distracted as they sang to the kitten.
They’re singing, Yuri realized. And I’m - I’m not walking toward them. I can just listen to them.
It was only after a few seconds of Misty being in Casey’s arms for them to realize exactly what they just did, and they looked up with wide eyes toward Yuri. Their hazel eyes met his light blue ones, and they started to softly stumble out an apology. “Sorry, I didn’t think-”
Casey was cut off hard as a wave of nausea hit them like a truck just four words in. Usually, Yuri’s formulas made it easier for them to talk, even if only a little bit. This seemed to do the exact opposite. Even though they spoke at a level that was usually fine for them, sickness hit them harder than usual, and Casey nearly fell forward as they thought they might pass out.
The moment he saw xem sway, Yuri ran from across the room, making it just in time to grab xem by xyr shoulders and help xem sit up. “Casey! Are you alright? Wait, nevermind, don’t speak! Clearly, this experiment ended less favorably than I’d hoped,” he began, shaking his head. “I don’t need you to finish your sentence, anyway. You were about to apologize for singing, weren’t you?”
They managed a nod before another wave of nausea hit them, and Yuri swiftly reached for the emesis basin beside them, putting it up to their chin. “Don’t push yourself. I’m here, rely on me,” he insisted. “And there’s no need to apologize. I always love to hear you sing. Additionally… you didn’t distract me. I was looking at you because I was enjoying your voice.”
Xe tilted xyr head at Yuri, and the man continued. “My formula dulled the wrong effect. Instead of dulling the effects of your nausea, it dulled the strength of your stigma… and made your nausea worse instead. I’ll make adjustments and make sure not to give it to you again, and for now, I’ll administer an antiemetic. I’ll observe you the rest of the night as well to make sure no other unintended side effects rear their head…” Yuri trailed off and sighed. “This is to be expected with trial and error, but… I’m sorry, Cas. Let me take care of you to make up for it.”
If they could talk, they’d try telling Yuri that it was really fine. Because truthfully, knowing that Yuri loved their voice even without their stigma making him drawn to it…
It was the best thing they thought would never happen.

I Want to Be Anything for You
characters ; Alan Mido, TKDB S/I
summary ; On one tough night during the Clash, Alan gets vulnerable about their relationship.
word count ; 988
Once Alan and Casey had started dating, oftentimes Casey would find it infinitely more comforting to sleep at Alan’s side than any of their accommodations. Especially after the Clash started - there was an intense sense of security, protection, and ease that they had sleeping next to Alan that they couldn’t get anywhere else.
Honestly, it was harder to fall asleep alone in their own bed, and they slept like garbage when they tried. Alan was the one to first suggest sharing a bed when he noticed it - and Casey was surprised he picked up on it so easily. There were some social conventions that Alan struggled with, but when it came to them, Casey felt like Alan could read them like an open book.
It made being around him so much easier. There was no burden of communication, funnily enough. He was patient with them if they needed to write something out, he’d find quiet places to listen to them if they needed to talk it out, and he never expected more from them. He knew their limitations and never once ‘stretched’ them or made them feel like they had to burden themself to be heard. Not with Alan.
So, the moment he suggested Casey spend nights in his bed when they couldn’t sleep, they took him up on it. They’d sneak into his room in the middle of the night, and they wouldn’t need to say anything before crawling under the covers beside him and wrapping their arms around his waist. It had become a natural routine for both of them.
Tonight was no different than most nights, but when Casey closed Alan’s door behind them and approached the bed, they noticed that Alan was already awake and staring up to his ceiling. They slowed down as they approached, whispering once they thought they were close enough for Alan to hear. “Is something on your mind?”
Alan turned to face them, his grey eyes softening as his gaze landed on them. “It was a… long day,” he admitted. “Come here.”
Although he had trouble putting it into words at times, Alan found as much comfort in Casey’s presence as they found in his. He’d been misunderstood his entire life, and he was used to it. He made himself get used to it once he realized that it was only a waste of time trying to change the minds of people who were stuck in their assumptions.
He was so used to it, that finding someone who didn’t misunderstand him came as a shock. He never thought he’d have someone like Casey in his life - someone who understood him and saw the best in him when he never could. They saw him the way he could only dream the rest of the world did - where others feared him, Casey reached out and held onto him. They didn’t turn away from the intimidating parts of him.
Especially now, during the Clash, he wondered why they had that trust in him. How they did despite everything going on, despite others on the contrary who insisted that he was a murderer.
Casey took a seat beside him on the bed, their heart jumping a little when Alan adjusted to rest his head on their lap. He drew in a deep breath and closed his eyes, and Casey carefully raised their hand up, embracing the intimacy by carding their fingers through his hair. The Clash is taking a lot out of all of us, but… Alan is taking a lot of it on himself, they thought. “Is there something you need to talk about?” they asked softly. “I’m here if you need someone to listen.”
Alan turned his head and opened his eyes, looking up to meet Casey’s hazel gaze. “I want to be the person you see me as,” he admitted.
They tilted their head at him, their hand pausing halfway through his hair. “What do you mean?”
“You’ve always seen me in a way that I can’t see myself,” Alan answered, his voice low. “Where others have turned away, you stayed. Where I was unsure about myself, you reassured me. It came naturally to you, it seemed. To believe in me.”
“It never took any convincing to make me believe in you,” they responded, giving him a small smile. “In the entire time I’ve known you, you’ve never done anything to make me believe you’re anything less than the kind, protective, sincere man I see you as. I’ve never seen a side of you that others seem to believe there is.”
He hummed, closing his eyes again. “If you asked me to change, I would. If there was something I could do that I don’t see, a path forward that I’m blind to, I’d trust you to lead me there. I’d do that for you. If I had to change, I’d trust you to do it.”
No. It’s not you that has to change, Casey thought, quickly grabbing Alan’s hand and squeezing it in their own. “I don’t want you to change. Ever. I fell for you because you’re you, Alan - why would I want you to be any different? It’s not your fault that people don’t see you for who you really are.”
It’s the fact you’re a ghoul, they thought, but their voice got stuck. It’s this school, and how unconfirmed whispers of your past have snowballed into an accusation that you’d murder someone. It’s nothing you’ve done now. You haven’t done anything wrong.
Alan slowly lifted their hand, bringing it to his lips and pressing a soft kiss to their knuckles. Even if they couldn’t say all their thoughts out loud, it was almost like Alan could feel their intention entirely in the weight of the words they could whisper. “Thank you,” he whispered. “For everything.”
You don’t have to thank me, they thought.
Casey didn’t need to say it out loud. Alan knew.
He always did.

concept. your strong fictional other, who’s treated as the one to rely on (maybe they’re the leader, or maybe they‘re the most physical) learning to rely on you. they come to you with problems they can’t tell anybody else, and you cradle their face in your hands. they melt into your touch.
you’re the only one to treat them gently, and they love you for that.
