Languages on the continent of Pyrrhia: ( My Headcanons )

Pyrrhian: Most commonly referred to as “common” or the “old language” by the dragons of Pantala. All dragons on Pyrrhia are taught this at a young age in school and the only dragons on the continent who can’t speak it are dragons from Pantala or very young dragonets.

Aquatic: A non-verbal language exclusive to those with bioluminescent scales. Their language is a pattern of flashes with their scales that are similar to a mix of the real world morse code and american sign language. It doesn’t matter for neutral messages where on the body the series of flashes is on, however depending on where on the body the flashes are on, their brightness/dimness and how fast the flashes are is used to show urgency or emotion.

Talon Speak: A non-verbal language spoken all across the continent, not every dragon knows it but when choosing a language to learn how to speak in school, most dragons choose this language. Talon Speak is very similar to American Sign Language and requires dragons to use their front talons, tail, facial expressions, etc. to speak the language. This non-verbal language was created many centuries ago just after the scorching, after the scorching the continent was in an age of dire war, which often left many veteran dragons deaf. Some tribes didn’t have any languages like Aquatic so they worked together to create a non-verbal language for the hard of hearing.

Rattlesnake: This phrase refers to an old, almost forgotten language among the Sandwings. During times of war this language was created as a way of communicating during battle without the enemy noticing. Many Sandwings have a sort of mix of their scorpion barb and a rattlesnake tail. These sandwings would shake their tails ever so slightly in a pattern of different variations of noises to speak with other Sandwings. This language is very rarely used today outside of some old Sandwings who used to fight in old wars knowing it.

Icewing Tongue: Icewing Tongue is the official and most common language in the Ice Kingdom, all Icewings learn to speak this language first, Pyrrhian second and Talon Speak last. Icewings see themselves as completely different from the other tribes and prefer to be much more isolated which is why long ago they developed their own language. The other tribes are aware of this and many dragonets in school choose to learn Icewing Tongue as their second language.

Nightwing Script: The language was lost to time when Nightwings moved kingdoms, but written records of the language remain. No one knows how to speak it but some have learned to write it, mainly scholars in the Night Kingdom, which is why it has been called Nightwing Script. It has been repurposed in the Night Kingdom as a secret written language for important documents. Because of this, only the most important dragons in the Night Kingdom are allowed to learn it.

That’s all for today, these are just my headcanons, I found it a little goofy that Pyrrhia’s only languages were common dragon and Aquatic so I spiced it up a bit! I will do Pantala soon :))

I also like the idea that because all dragon tribes evolved from the same species at first they would all speak the same language but it would change and evolve into them having different dialects and in the terms of Pantala, completely evolve and change into an entirely new language to the point where the “old language” is as well spoken commonly as latin is in the real world in Pantala.
