Gonna vent a little about some stuff going on in my personal life so just ignore me if you want…

So about a month ago my cousin died leaving her son with her mom (my aunt)

My aunt was already in really bad health and ever since my cousins death has just completely stopped taking care of herself and is now in the hospital on a ventilator

I’ve had a lot of family members end up the same way so I know there’s no way my aunt is making it, at this point it’s just a matter of time before she passes

Me and my mom have already been taking care of my cousin’s son (who I’ll just be calling M) since my aunt has been in the hospital and we’ve been trying to decide what we’re going to do once my aunt passes

There’s only so many options for M as he’s only 15, is severely autistic, and his bio dad has never had anything to do with him

Essentially either we take custody of him or he goes into foster care

Obviously we don’t want M to be put into the system, and want him to be with family he knows

But I am so god damn over whelmed right now yall have no idea I have a literal CHILD relying on me now after he’s lost everyone else

This part is so sweet to me because Halt absolutely did not need to be there. He could have so easily just left Gilan alone to sleep and he wouldn't have been in any danger at all, and Halt could have gone and gotten ready for the fucking war. But no, he chose to stay with Gilan for six fucking hours.

(I know he probably didn't stay the whole time but it's sweeter if you think he did so I'm going with that)

This just reminded me that Ares may be the god of war but he’s also the protector of women… very Horace coded

Okay so like before I can get into the au I have to really explain that Horace Altman is, always has been, and always will be my knight in shining armor in every sense of what that may mean.

Like have you ever seen that trend where it like “imagine you’re alone in a room with man, real or fictional, and you feel completely safe, who’s the man?” Literally it’s Horace, all day every day.

And It’s literally just because for me he is the picture of women respecting masculine protectiveness if that makes any sense. Like Horace would be the type of man that would sit and listen to women’s issues and actively be anti-misogynist and do what he can to make the women around him feel comfortable because he knows that he’s this big muscular warrior and that could be intimidating and make a woman feel unsafe in his presence. Like intentionally offering his hand to someone who might need it to steady themselves, but not grabbing them, those sort of things.

Horace would be the man that would check how other men behave towards women. Like “locker room” talk among the knights and warriors? Absolutely fucking not, If you can’t speak respectfully you won’t speak at all, and he would break someone’s jaw to make sure they shut up for good. You want to grab at the serving girls or girl around the towns and villages? You suddenly do not have hands to grab with.

Like I just need you all to understand that everywhere Horace goes, he acts like a guardian protector for the girls and women who do not have protection. When the knight of the oak leaf visits EVERYONE can walk safely in the night because no one is willing to risk his wrath, and this continues long after he leaves.

And this is all mostly because of our beloved Horace’s own morals and personality, but what if something had happened in Gallica that had triggered this?

Personally I think Gilan deserves an apprentice too (I mean like yes Will is his lil bro and he did train Horace a bit with dual wielding techniques but I’m talking a real apprentice)

Like I think Flanagan should’ve given Gilan a feral woods child who had been stolen from their family and it’s this whole thing where Gilan’s on the trail of the bad guys and right when he’s about to arrest/kill/whatever them the feral child who had their family killed by the bad guys and was taken by them gets to it before Gil does

And it’s like full Eren Jeager shit this kid is going ape shit with a knife on the closest guy and Gilan is like “okay I guess we’re doing this” and they just take em all down

And In typical ranger fashion Gilan’s like “hey kid if you’ve got nowhere else to go I’ll train you or whatever”

Also the camo fits so well with the ranger aesthetic ughhh and like obv only the dragons highly suited to survive (ie the ones capable of camouflage) are still around and that’s why no one’s seen them 😭

Also I feel as for if the rangers have magic I think it depends on the ranger?? Like in my au you are either a magical creature, or you have magic so it’s just kinda 🧍‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

BUT you know I love me some dragon bonding and gaining magic through your dragon bond

Something I’ve thought about a lot in terms of the Magic Is Real au and NEED to talk about asap is this:

Dragons once roamed Araluen and preyed on other magical creatures like Wargals and Kalkara.

Now it’s been a looooong while since I’ve read the books so I can’t remember if Morgarath created the Kalkara or not but I do remember that he used mind magic or something to control the wargals which were already existing creatures that he made into his army. I also remember that the wargals were terrified of horses and the Kalkara were vulnerable to fire. So In my version of the Magic Is Real au, the wargals are terrified of horses because it is ingrained in them to fear large, 4 legged, long faced animals.

I’m being very biology brained about this but I love the idea of dragons going almost extinct, from being hunted by humans or out competed by other predators or whatever, and the wargal/Kalkara population going unchecked allowing Morgarath to create his army, but also dragons themselves become a thing of legend by the time of the series. Like sure there are legends, brave knights slaying fire breathing beasts, but they’re just stories. Until someone (maybe our favorite rangers??) finds a real live dragon

Autistic Horace

Rigid rules and a strong sense of personal justice are like the character traits he was given in book 3 and 4! They're also really common traits of autism!

He also takes things fairly literally and is often seen not understanding jokes

And honestly? His behavior in the ward very closely matches how my autistic brother behaves when overwhelmed. And that scene where he tried to attack Tug out of anger from being left out also reminds me of when my brother "explodes" in similar situations. Because issues controlling anger can also be an autistic trait (according to my brother's last therapist, at least).

Halt is very autistic coded, yes, but why have I not seen autistic Horace headcanons? Basically every single character trait he has aligns with autism symptoms!!
