most girls and women have learned to perform sexy years before actually feeling desire of their own. it is incredibly difficult to separate the performance of sexy from one’s own actual desire.
the saturation of women-as-objects, abusers using grooming techniques such as exposing minors to porn, the constant and overwhelming message that women exist solely to be fucked by men - these are things you absorb long before you learn that you have the right to enjoy your own body. if your sex positive feminism can’t be bothered to address the difference between these things, or brush them off then your sex positive feminism hurts women.

When men imagine a female uprising, they imagine a world in which women rule men as men have ruled women.
Sally Kempton
I feel this is very important.

It’s been apparent to me for a while that most men can’t really imagine “equality.”  All they can imagine is having the existing power structure inverted.
I cannot decide whether this shows how unimaginative they are, or shows how aware they must be of what they do in order to so deeply fear having it turned on them.

This is the exact same mindset which was around 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece: the ancient Greeks created myths of scary, terrible matriarchies where women dominated, oppressed and killed men (e.g. the Amazons) to justify the subordination of women. They maintained that women were naturally irrational, unruly and incapable of governing themselves or others (the same set of beliefs which led to them being excluded from Athenian democracy) and giving them power would inevitably lead to the oppression of men.
'The polarising imagination of Greek mythic thought not only establishes a strong dichotomy between male and female, it also posits predictable behaviour responses at either end of the spectrum where female self-assertion on her own behalf comes only at the cost of annihilating the Other. We might perhaps speak of an “Amazon” complex that envisions that woman's refusal of her required subordinate role must, by an inevitable sequence, lead to its opposite: total domination, gynecocracy, whose extreme form projects the enslavement or murder of men. That same polarising imagination can conceive of only two hierarchic alternatives: Rule by Men or Rule by Women'
- Zeitlin, F. I., (1996) Playing the Other: Gender and Society in Classical Greek Literature p.91. Zeitlin’s book is brilliant, this quote is from the Chapter 3 ‘The Dynamics of Misogyny’. It’s well worth the read, there’s a link to an online version here.
It’s depressing that the male mindset hasn’t advanced in 2,500 years.

petition to not allow straight guys to drive bc if they can’t focus in school when a girl’s shoulders are showing then how can they focus on the road when women are all over billboards and may be walking or jogging in TANK TOPS and SHORT SHORTS and we let them drive by it all at 20-80mph in vehicles that weigh thousands of pounds? it’s a public safety hazard really

Why can’t there be a male hooter’s equivalent where male servers are shirtless and highly sexualized for their bodies and looks

After Jessica Williams declared that she does not want to replace Jon Stewart, a journalist decided it to diagnose Williams with “imposter syndome” (the idea that a woman in a male dominated field doesn’t feel as if they’re not doing enough to be in said position) and this was Williams response.

Mike Tyson is a convicted rapist, and he now stars as a loveable cartoon TV detective. Roman Polanski raped a 13-year-old and has since won an Oscar to a standing ovation. Sean Connery is the celebrated embodiment of rugged cool, who has openly championed beating women in order to keep ’em in line. Bill Murray has been accused by his ex-wife of repeated, brutal physical abuse. Rick James was arrested for torturing and sexually abusing a woman for three days straight, only to have his image rehabilitated by Dave Chappelle years later. John Lennon is one of the most worshipped artists who has ever drawn breath, and he has copped to battering the shit out of women.

+ Sean Penn is a respected and awarded actor/”philanthropist” and he tied Madonna to a chair and beat her endlessly with a baseball bat in a fit of drunken rage until she narrowly escaped only after being nearly disfigured by the beating

It’s hard not to feel humorless as a woman and a feminist, to recognize misogyny in so many forms, some great and some small, and know you’re not imagining things. It’s hard to be told to lighten up because if you lighten up any more, you’re going to float the fuck away. The problem is not that one of these things is happening, it’s that they are all happening, concurrently and constantly. These are just songs. They are just jokes. They are just movies. It’s just a hug. They’re just breasts. Smile, you’re beautiful. Can’t a man pay you a compliment? In truth, this is all a symptom of a much more virulent cultural sickness — one where women exist to satisfy the whims of men, one where a woman’s worth is consistently diminished or entirely ignored.

What is wrong with white feminism? I am white by the way I am curious. I am a feminist as in I think women should have the same potential and opportunities as men and not be give different expectations than men.
That’s what’s wrong with white feminism. Right there. Your only wish is that “women be equal to men.” Which men, exactly? Do you take into account that white women make more than all men of color? Do you take into account the inequities faced by women in the third world because of capitalism? What about the mistreatment of trans women? Disabled?
You don’t want all people to be equal. You don’t wanna challenge the power structures. You want white women to be equal to white men so you can have a seat at the patriarchal white supremacist capitalist table and maintain dominance. Your feminism must be anti-racist and anti-capitalist, not just one-size fits all ~equality.~ We want equity.
Oh and I remember your fatphobic ass too. If you don’t support fat women, you don’t support all women.

This is probably on tumblr already, but I saw this today. All I can do is ask not are you a feminist, but why aren’t you?
Feminism means that we cannot hide behind gender or sexual orientation.

Beyoncé has been Beyoncé-ing for over a year now and you’re still questioning her feminist credentials because her praxis doesn’t match yours. Nicki Minaj has been vocal about her feminism for years but you revoked her credentials because she made a video about her exquisitely crafted rear end and rapped about the men who want to fuck her. To me, all that debate sounded a lot like judgement of other women for the way they chose to express their sexuality. This really confuses me because I thought that sexual agency was a cornerstone of contemporary feminist thought. After all, a woman’s body is her own, and what she chooses to do with it or how she chooses to exercise and experience her sexuality is up to her alone. Except, apparently, if you’re black.
