focus on the likes and not the wants

you may not want to clean your room, but you like the peace and call it brings you after
you may not want to study, but you like the confidence and satisfaction you get from being prepared
you may not not want to apologise, but you like the relief and connection that reconciliation brings
you may not want to cook, but you like the satisfaction of eating a healthy come cooked meal prepared with love
you may not want to exercise, but you like how you feel afterwards and how it makes you confident
you may not want to journal or write, but you like the reflection and calm it brings you
you may not want to step out of your comfort zone, but you like the new experiences and growth you gain from it

Took me until about halfway through college before I realized “study” means “play with the material in a variety of ways until you understand it” and not just “read the assigned chapters and do the homework” and I think that probably should have been discussed at some point prior to that.

We decided to publish this survey a second time because, by accident, the first version only lasted for a day.
Please reblog for a bigger sample size!

Cheat codes about life I know at 35 I wish I knew at 20:

1. The less you give a damn about what other people think, the more powerful you are.
2. Porn, drugs, and alcohol have no advantages. You get poorer, dumber, and fatter as a result.
3. You still have time to enjoy a good time, but first work on improving your financial, physical, and emotional health.
4. Set out 40 minutes daily to learn a high-income skill, exercise, and meditate, and you'll be unstoppable.
5. Make your financial stability a top priority. Money makes life ten times easier.
6. Your life has been a complete mess because of your "I'll do it tomorrow" mentality. Act now for the future.
7. Have self-respect and never tolerate disrespect from others, not even from your friends.
8. Stop daydreaming about your future and put forth the effort to achieve your goals. Risking is better than regretting.
9. Stop staying in your comfort zone, it will only prevent you from growing.
10. Do not waste your energy worrying. Use your powers to think, learn, create, and grow.

Master List of Academic Success from Girl with a 4.0 at Uni (study tips, life tips, etc.)
For some school tips:
Go to your professors office hours. Seriously just go. I've literally had professors tell me questions that are going to be on the test in office hours. I've had professors help me break past writing block in office hours. Often, professors are much more agreeable in 1-1 conversations, and they start to learn your name and work ethic (particularly important in large classes) My favorite example of this: Fall term of my freshman year, I had an astronomy class that was huge, Im talking hundreds of students. There were about 10-20 of us who found out that during office hours the week of big exams, the professor would actually let us help him choose test questions. His office was high up with a great view, and it was so fun to cram in to his office and huddle up, especially during the winter months late at night, excitedly discussing black holes, the conversation pin balling around the room.
Take paper notes. Holy crap I cant emphasize this enough. I know there's a heap of science behind it I just don't know the details so I won't go into it, but it dramatically increases memory. So during lecture, take notes using paper and pen, and in fact, keep all your electronics in your bag for class. This helps you keep engaged in the lecture and you never get distracted and tune out.
Sit in the front row. I know, I know. But seriously I've genuinely sat in the front row for every single lecture that I've ever attended since freshman year, and it has done wonders for me. I'm so much more willing to participate in discussions and answer questions, which helps me understand the content more. Also another great strategy to avoid using your phone or computer to eliminate distraction.
Don't skip lecture. I've never skipped a lecture unless I was sick enough that I felt like I would vomit during class. Skipping class just is not worth the consequences. Genuinely every lecture is important and you never know when the professor will say something that is going to be on exams or quizzes.
Do assigned readings and homework. every. single. time. Unlike in high school, a big majority of the assignments professors give out aren't actually busy work- they have a purpose. They're often super helpful for understanding information better overall.
Have study spots and spaces. One of my favorites is a 24 hour coffee shop about 10 minutes from campus. The vibes are off the charts, super eclectic, and insanely productive. Never study in bed, trust me. Libraries, coffee shops, even the dining room table are good. Just not bed.
Life tips:
Sleep. I know the academia world romanticizes running on 3 hours of sleep because we were up too late reading. But sleep is an academic superpower than severely enhances the functioning of our brains. Don't procrastinate things that are important- get stuff done early in the day. Go to sleep early and wake up early.
On that note, become a morning person. My most productive hours are 5-9 am, before my roommates are awake, before anyone is awake. In these hours I'm able to workout, clean the apartment, talk to God, and start studying, all before most people are awake, which means less distractions. Also, there's something really sweet about rubbing the sleep out of your eyes, coffee becomes so much more sacred, and silence is refreshing.
Eat food friends. I know sometimes we can forget to eat all day as we become lost in study, but I find that sometimes just a study snack makes me a lot more productive and revives me from any groggy feelings.
Ask questions. People will love to answer, and it makes you seem curious and interested.
Dress up. Even when you get up in the morning, change out of your pajamas. You can even change into different pajamas if you want. But I find that a nice outfit helps me feel lots more productive and aesthetic.
Last but not least, carpe diem, make your lives extraordinary.
#study tips#if you're not a morning person please don't beat yourself up over it#just find a rhythm that works for YOU

long term study tips
a lot of study tip posts that exist have a weird mix of short term and long term tips and that weirds me out, so here are some long term study tips (aka pavlov-ing yourself):
light the same scent of candle every day when you study- eventually the smell of the candle will put you in a study mood
drink the same kind of drink (I always drink green tea) and you will start to associate the process of getting the drink/the smell/the taste with studying
get into a habit of studying for a few minutes every night. Even if you are not doing much, it's something.
play the same playlist whenever you study- hearing "reflections" by Toshifumi Hinata instantly puts me into the study mood
Routines routines routines: the only reason I passed some of my classes last year was because I had routines in place for doing my work (they are falling apart this year, and I'm struggling.)
#long term study tips#study tips#pavlov#funny how just yesterday in my english course we read a text about him

Study break ideas, because burnout sucks
Taking breaks is, arguably, the most important thing a person can do when studying. Nearly every piece of advice on the internet regarding studying talks about how important breaks are, but few give example of what a productive, useful break can look like.
Things that make a good break:
things that reset your mind, things that allow you to rest, things that need to get done but don't use too much brain power, etc. If your brain is working during your break, it is not going to be as useful as a break where you can just move through things without a thought.
Things that make a bad break:
Anything that uses your brain. While it may not feel like it, reading your favorite book as a break isn't great because you are processing and using that noggin. Being on your phone is extra terrible because you get the double dose of 1) using your brain and 2) instant gratification, which can throw off any motivation you had to study.
Now here are some actual examples of things to do on your break:
~ make yourself a snack
~ do your hair
~ wash your face/brush teeth/take a shower
~ go on a quick run (most people can run a mile in less than 15 min)
~ take a power nap (can be dangerous- make sure you have an alarm set + you don't get more tired after taking a nap)
~ clean your room
~ clean out your fridge
~ do a stretching routine
~ make your bed
anything that is purely physical will work well- get your body doing something other than sitting at a desk and your brain and body both will thank you

I know you want to sleep in but you have to wake up early. I know you don't like the taste, but you have to brush your teeth in the morning. I know that you want to rest, but you're not where you want yet. I know it's warm in your bed but you have to step in the cold. I know the water is cold but you have to wash your face in the morning. I know you feel sad and alone but you have to do it anyway. I know you don't feel like it but you have to do that workout. I know it's not always tasty but you have to eat healthy. I know it's boring but you have to stick to a routine. I know you want to spend it but you have to save that money. I know you are tired but you have to stick to your skincare routine. I know you are tired but you still have to finish that assignment. I know you want to go to sleep but you still haven't done everything that's on your to do list. I know you are tired but YOU HAVE TO DO IT TIRED. I know you are hurt, but you will heal. I know it's uncomfortable what I just told you but you have to be leading a boring, disciplined and uninteresting life if you want to achieve your dream! STAY FOCUSED!
#please take care of yourselves#please rest#if you are tired go to sleep#practice some self-care#life on earth is to short

9/100 days of productivity
🥱19.10.2023
I am tired. Gosh, my full days are catching up on me. + period. I skipped a lecture today cause my brother came visiting - I don't really wanna catch up on it but I will
Productive:
first Seminar on welfare policy in international organizations - mostly organisation
preparing a small presentation about fairness and distribution of resources
Self care
Listening to music on my way to and from uni
Spending time with my fam, especially my brother
finishing the puzzle together
playing Spiritfarer on my switch
reading a chapter of my sister's novel
Watching Divergent with my fam
Shower
I really needed this small break. Only working till 2pm was needed, even if I am behind on some stuff now. But I'll be able to do that stuff much better because I'm rested. So please, take breaks, rest, take care of yourself - you deserve it

If I may, I must make the gentle request that people consult Wikipedia for basic information about anything.
I’m not entirely sure what’s going on, but more and more people coming to me saying they can’t find info about [noun], when googling it yields its Wikipedia entry on the first page.
I’ve said it before, but I’ll gladly say it again: You can trust Wikipedia for general information. The reason why it’s unreliable for academic citations is because it’s a living, changing document. It’s also written by anonymous authors, and author reputation is critical for research paper integrity.
But for learning the basics of what something is? Wikipedia is your friend. I love Wikipedia. I use it all the time for literally anything and everything, and it’s a huge reason why I know so much about things and stuff.
Please try going there first, and then come to me with questions it doesn’t answer for you.
