popular culture used to be very much about eroticism. rockstars used to be on stage in sequins and thongs and thigh high boots playing guitars like they were masturbating. girls used to wear velvet mini dresses and no bras and red-brick-brown lipstick and mascara on their bottom lashes. people used to have body hair on television and in the movies. people used to be sweaty. people used to touch each other over denim and under cotton. foreplay used to be staring at someone over the rim of a glass across a bar across a park across a dinner table. people used to want. i think we’ve lost something
#hm fascinating thought process between the two ppl here#sometimes anything less than overt sexualisation is framed as 'concealed' sexual content. like. coy and indirect and thus conservative#this assumes that there's just this straight line between unsexual and sexual content and a clear distinction between the two#one side belongs to the church (right) and the other belongs to the heathens (left) but that's false and that's the issue#with how heavily the popular rhetoric relies on yes-no black-white binary it misrepresents human experience#it means that anything less than vividly sexual is drifting to the conservative anti-sex puritanism and that's just not true#we know it isnt true but the language and discourse often doesnt reflect it. so i like this reminder that eroticism is its own thing#fans of yearning understand that but i rarely see it spoken about so clearly. they just Feel it when hozier does that thing#where he buries desire in poems and you're like 'whoa wait that's filthy' when finally you make sense of it (the riddle makes it intimate)#(and there is a whole different topic about how different genres treat yearning and desire but that's super intersectional)#as so many people sink into the y/n logic regarding sexual expression (im talking the dependence on labels and concerns of moral purity)#it's nice to remember the spectrum exists. always exists. even though the system really wants it to be binary it never is#and desire/eroticism/yearning is certainly observable within a system that is violently trying to be binary but that doesn't make it binary#anyway this is still a half-baked take so im leaving it in the tags and might delete later lmao#musing. gotta read more#but i am thinking very hard about pop culture. optics without substance. sex positivity under capitalism. desire being illegal.#where it intersects with music culture. empowerment. sabrina carpenter. megan thee stallion. purity and perfection. sex as a concept.#hm.#mimzamine

god I know I shouldn't be using the Spotify DJ as it is but the fact it now has this automated 'I noticed you skipping those songs 🥺 you didn't like that? You can change the songs anytime ☺️☺️☺️' routine pisses me off. if you're going to imitate a real life DJ then at least impersonate one with a backbone, what's the point of an apologetic DJ that switches gears based on request???? either fix your shuffle function or stop personifying the DJ as a needy little pissant, it's killing the vibe
