hm okay ive never gotten involved in "gifted kid discourse" but i saw smth today that. kinda pissed me off a bit. and kinda made me realize that a lot of ppl who talk abt it dont grasp the full extent of what "gifted kids" go through. like. i was pressured into applying for colleges when i was thirteen, and i was told that if i couldn't get into a good college at thirteen that i was basically worthless. a lot of the other kids i did classes with spent so much time in after-school academic programs that they often didnt get home until midnight or later, and then they had to get up at 5 am the next day for school. not to mention the fact that they started these programs as early as 3 years old, meaning they never learned to socialize or really got exposure to other kids their age. the "advanced" school i was forced to switch to (by my school district) in fourth grade was so stressful and demanding that I ended up staying up until one or two in the morning every night to get my homework done. when i was nine years old, that same program made me so morbidly depressed that i ended up trying to kill myself three times. when i was nine years old.

anyways yeah the school system is fucked but there is a difference between "gifted kids who were told they were special and never learned to get over themselves" and "gifted kids who got horribly fucked over by both their parents and the education system and ended up severly traumatized and/or dysfunctional because of it" and "gifted lid discourse" needs to learn to acknowledge that
