things i wish i’d been told sometimes
𓂃 your life revolves around you and it always has. if you feel the need to stop and catch your breath, do it. time moves forward, but your life will never be able to continue without you.
𓂃 the way people talk to you about others is a direct reflection of how they talk to others about you. remember that.
𓂃 life is too short to stay quiet. your voice carries you as much as you carry your voice.
𓂃 nobody pays as much attention to you as you think they do.
𓂃 nobody’s expecting you to do something useful every day. you shouldn’t expect that from yourself either.
𓂃 nothing that matters to you is useless. if it’s important to you then it’s important, period.
𓂃 don’t live every day like it’s your last–rather like it’s your first. get to know your space, get comfortable where you aren’t yet, try new things but not everything at once. and look forward to things that are coming.
𓂃 you’re only responsible for what you can control and influence. focus on that.
𓂃 stop trying to be okay all the time. you do not have to be okay all the time.
𓂃 it’s more common to have a soft and protecting tummy than to have flat abs. both is healthy, both is pretty.
𓂃 your teens are not your only chance on having a good, fulfilled, and social life. if you can’t find your place in high school you will in another environment. this isn’t where it ends.
𓂃 you have the right to change your mind over and over and over again until you’re happy.

“And that quote, “The only disability in life is a bad attitude,” the reason that that’s bullshit is because it’s just not true.” - Stella Young
[IDs: Screenshots from the late, great, Stella Young’s TED Talk: I’m Not Your Inspiration, Thank You Very Much. Stella is a wheelchair-user sitting up on the stage in front of a massive crowd. In these screenshots, she’s saying, “No amount of smiling at a flight of stairs has ever made it turn into a ramp. Never. (Laughter. Applause.) Smiling at a television screen isn’t going to make closed captions appear for people. No amount of standing in the middle of a bookshop and radiating a positive attitude is going to turn all those books into braille.]
I use this speech and the underlying theories a lot in my PhD, but Stella Young honestly had one of those voices that needs to be heard by everyone, so I figured I’d post my favorite part of the speech here. If anyone remembers that time I threw myself onto the floor For The Vine, you’ll know that I also hate the quote: “The only disability in life is a bad attitude”. Stella just conveyed the message with less pain.

"One of the most prevalent obstacles in our ability to heal and self-actualise is when our productivity is tied to our worthiness."
I think the studyblr community especially needs to hear this. You don't have to be productive all the time, you need rest. Recovering from internalised capitalism means unpicking all the messages from family, friends, school and workplace that have reinforced the idea that you are a commodity, and that your worth is based on what you do. Your worth is inherent.

for those who do not love their education deeply
you are not 'spoilt'
you are not 'wasting' anything or anyone's time
the educational system is awful & you have every right to speak out against it
a teacher must teach you, but they must also entertain and encourage you. if they do not, that is out of your control
most dark academics are making the best of a bad situation
your mental health matters more than grades
not every subject will thrill & excite you. not enjoying literature, poetry or art doesn't make you a 'fake' academic
you can enjoy a subject without studying it & you have every right to say you enjoy it
barely passing or failing a course is not the end of the world. you will get better, whether that means continuing the course or dropping it for your true passion
sometimes you're not good at something, even if you love it. don't sacrifice your mental & physical health to pass a course that you find impossible, but let yourself enjoy it if you can
remember your worth is not in your grades.
