It’s finally #ElectionDay in Maine! I cannot emphasize how important today’s election is. I have been following this and waiting for this since shortly after moving here. So many lies from @avangrid @hydroquebec @necec_me yet Mainers can see right through it all. From the fact that this project has no benefits, only destruction, to our environment, to the lie that it is only 54’ wide when it’s already about 100’. From HydroQuebec’s recklessness to their own indigenous people and influencing our elections, to @mainersforfairlaws (ironic name) alluding that a “yes” vote is the same thing as getting rid of your health care and taking your gun rights away. I think we have had enough. I am so excited to cast my vote and hold these companies accountable. A Life Well Lived • Growing up, I lived next to one of the strongest women I’ve known. I remember Margie mowing the lawn even in the blistering Kansas heat well into her senior years. I remember the thrift store we both volunteered at to support people with developmental disabilities. I remember taking food over to her house and simply spending some time there. Today she departed this life. Is the CMP corridor racist? Why yes it is! (Found this photo on @mainememes thought it was pretty funny) Some background: the corridor (which, again, only benefits Massachusetts and wealthy people) would come from hydropower from Hydro-Québec in Canada. Anyways, indigenous people in Canada have had it rough with no thanks to HQ. HQ illegitimately occupies a lot of land that belongs to Canada’s First Nations. And by a lot, it’s 36% of HQ’s total installed electrical capacity. It is cruel. It is unjust. I can see why CMP would like the idea. What we can see is what Quebec’s corridor has done to its environment. The struggles Canada’s First Nations have caused waterway navigation impassible. Areas people used to live in are now underwater. Migratory patterns are offset. Many animals will not pass under the lines as there is an audible hum. HQ is racist. They do not pay their indigenous neighbors fairly but instead profit heavily off of the use of their lands as the surrounding environment is destroyed. Allowing this project is racist and amoral. It says that what HQ does is okay. Similarities are to come for Maine if CMP pushes forward with this abolishment. This land will be decimated. We have seen what happened in Quebec. Yes to jobs from other states! The story keeps changing. That’s one thing that will stay the same with CMP. This photo is from quite a while ago (not my photo) but I think it is very representative. Two days ago the first pole for the New England Clean Energy Corridor (as they call it) was erected. Let’s see who put it up. Cianbro and Irby, a partner power line contractor from Mississippi. And Northern Clearing from Wisconsin. Now, of course there are more companies to come into play later on. These companies, even those out of state, may hire Maine workers but that is obviously not paramount to CMP. This is very representative too. CMP touted for so long about how many Maine jobs this would bring. So to kick off this “slap in the face” party, they brought in companies from other states. YOU NEED TO WAKE UP! I hate to stray from photography on this account, but I cannot stand by. Central Maine Power, who is only a friend to themselves and our government officials in Augusta, has lied to you again. For those of you who do not know, CMP wants to build a transmission corridor from Quebec through Maine to connect Massachusetts to more power. This is not your typical power line though. This is a corridor with the width of the New Jersey turnpike. This is a corridor that’s cuts through pristine untouched Maine forest, even if they say otherwise. In the meantime, they rig your electricity bill in their favor. AGAIN. They will get sued for it and our politicians will do nothing. Just a few weeks ago a federal court issued a temporary restraining order blocking any work on the project. However the photo posted here is from two days ago (not my photo. Found it online.). They do the opposite of what is just and legal as usual. There was a petition that received over 100,000 signatures recently in opposition to CMP’s corridor. It was an effort the monopoly of a company desperately tried to silence. They must think that by putting up a physical component (even though the court said otherwise) it will show dominance over Mainers. I cannot be silent. Mainers, please do your research. “When you lose someone you love, you gain an angel you know.” -Unknown • Last night, just before sunset, the clouds were arranged in such a way as to send a message. Something inside me knew the time had come just by looking where the Sun’s rays could poke through the heavy wisping clouds. This morning I received a call. Around 4:30 this morning, at the age of 98 years old, my grandma, Gaga, passed from this world. This is the end of an era. No more driving through the gates of their Topeka neighborhood, brunch at their local country club, the photos of the grandchildren all over their house. Gaga has always been such a kind soul to everyone including her family. She raised four wonderful people including my own father. It is so hard to be far away during this time and it is even harder knowing I cannot travel to be with everyone. These memories are what I will hold onto my whole life long. This has been a painful year. This has been a painful year for my family. We appreciate your prayers and your kind words. Social Distancing • This sign haunts me. The first night I saw the ominous message on the marquee, I was coming home from a show downtown. Portland’s nightlife had a few people out but it was obvious things were changing. The message emphasized to me that we are, in many ways, on our own. Everything in the news was real and it was coming here. A lot has changed since I took this photo. Nearly nothing is open. The roads are silent all day long. It feels like we are living in an apocalyptic movie of the future. “Quarantine,” “isolation,” “social distancing,” and “pandemic” are words we all hear on a daily basis now. There has been a lot of talk about how this might be an overreaction but I know some people are scared. I’m scared too. You are not alone. We can only hope and pray that the chaos we are living in now will be resolved soon. For now, we take one day at a time. For my family and friends that I cannot be with right now, I love you so much and I am so excited to see you all again soon.
