Oh My God || Hazel Callahan
Listen- I believe in loser hazel and I find her to be perfect- I know this isn't my best fic but I've been in serious bottoms brain rot
dialog prompts:
"Hold my hand" "Absolutely not"
Characters: Hazel Callahan x Reader, the whole club
Word count: 2359
Hazel Callahan was your mortal enemy. Did she know? Probably not. It was honestly beside the point. Because what mattered was that bitch seemed to have it out for you since the start of high school. First, it was taking your topic for a history project. Whatever- no big deal. Then all the “accidents” spilling coffee on your backpack (she had given you money for a new one but still), tripping you in the walkways, and hitting you in the face with a volleyball (multiple times). After that, she got the better parking spot for senior year, and finally, the great big plump cherry on top, she took the lunch table you had practically reserved since freshman year.
At the end of the day, the whole ordeal may be a bit over-dramatic… but that table was perfect. In the corner, you could either hide or have a great undisturbed lunch with your friends. Hazel had sat there one day with Josie and PJ. which was weird in itself because they never had eaten in the cafeteria before and you didn't even remember them being friends.
For how much you didn't care about Hazel Callahan- she sure took a lot of your attention.
If anyone else had done any of those things- you probably wouldn’t have thought anything about it. But this was Hazel Callahan who despite your best efforts you could not stop crushing on.
The stolen table was a very recent development. As in on Monday and it was now Wednesday. You sat at the next best table with Sylvie and Krystal, watching as Hazel feverishly wrote something in her notebook as PJ seemed to make a grandiose speech.
She had no right to look that attractive while sitting in your spot. You groaned and face-planted into your crossed arms on the table.
“Are you good dude?” You rolled your head to the side to look at Sylvie and then let out another frustrated groan.
“Everything is awful and I hate it here.”
Krystal patted your back while Silive sighed, “You know what you need?”
“Hmm?”
“To hit something.”
You laughed from inside your arm fortress, “Okay Sylvie- what should I hit? A fucking tree? Jeff? A Huntington player?”
“No, you should join the fight club! It’s for women empowerment- I’m trying to train up to deal with my stepdad ya know?”
You lifted your head and gave your friend a questioning look. “Fight club? For women empowerment?”
Sylvie and Krystal both nodded excitedly.
“When and Where?”
----------------------------------------------
Of fucking course.
When you walk in behind Krystal and Sylvie to the gym, the first person you see is Hazel.
Your body immediately fills with rage. At this point, it’s starting to feel like you're more angry at yourself for crushing on someone you barely even know. But you believe in self-love so you plan to continue projecting your anger onto someone else.
Everyone was milling about and chatting, you left your bag on the bleachers by everyone else’s and followed your friends to the middle of the gym.
Stella-Rebecca caught your eye and waved, which you gladly returned before PJ stomped as hard as possible on the floor to get everyone's attention.
“What time is it?!” She screamed and was answered by a chorus of “3:15”s
“That’s right you sluts! It’s time to get down and dirty!”
You couldn't help the look of mild disgust that passed across your features. Maybe this wasn’t a good idea. After al, Sylvie made some seriously questionable choices- you thought you could trust Krystal though.
“Alright cunts- who wants to start us of-” PJ started by being cut off by Hazel who whispered something to her and then directed PJ’s attention onto you with a point of her pen. “Well look what the cat dragged in.” PJ gave you an unimpressed look which made you roll your eyes.
“I can leave if this is a closed cl-” You started to point behind you to the door but Josie stopped you by waving her hands
“No- no you're more than welcome. PJ just gets a little into it- you know flashbacks to juvie and all that.” Josie gives a reassuring (and awkward) smile.
You pursed your lips and nodded, “Cool.” out of the corner of your eye you could see Hazel giving Josie a thumbs up.
“Well, Since you’re fresh blood let's see what you got,” PJ says while smiling at you.
“Okay,” you shrug. “I really don’t know what I’m doing though so don’t expect much.”
PJ just brushes you off, “Don’t worry. It’s mostly just instinct.”
You nod and step into the center of the circle of girls. Okay, maybe this was a stupid fucking idea.
“Let's see…” PJ looks around the circle, trying to decide who to pair you up with. “Hazel- why don’t you hop in.”
Hazel looks nervous, but she still nods and enters the ring, giving you a small smile and nod.
You look at her blankly, “Now what?” you ask.
“Now you hit each other.” PJ claps her hands together, “Fucking beat each other the fuck up!”
“What-” You can’t finish your question because Hazel deals a hard hit right to your gut. “Fuck!” you double over in shock before gathering yourself again. “What the fuck.”
Hazel looks a little confused but motions to herself, “Hit me now- that's how this works.”
You give her the best “what the fuck” look you can convey before settling into a fighting stance. You thought there'd be a little lead-up or something.
You swung and got in a decent hit to the side of Hazel's face. It left a stinging sensation on your knuckles but you tried to shake it off.
The two of you exchanged a few more punches and kicks back and forth before Hazel managed to catch you completely off guard and-
BAM
Your ass hit the ground hard. “Fuck!” you couldn't help the curse from leaving your lips. You let yourself unfurl onto the ground and stared at the ceiling. The girls around you clapped as you tried to catch your breath.
“Good fight,” Hazel said, reaching one of her hands out towards you on the ground.
You just looked at her, “Yeah. Good...” Suddenly your head hurt a lot more than it did a minute ago. “Fight.” This was definitely a stupid fucking decision. Maybe this is what killed you. RIP the girl who got her lights knocked out but the girl who was both the love and hate of her life.
You tried to sit up but the world was kinda spinning.
“Hazel, how hard did you hit her?” Josie asked as she joined Hazel looking down at you. Hazel looked like a lost puppy.
“I didn’t think it was that hard- are you okay.”
You laughed not handling the embarrassment of the situation well, “I am so good actually.” You went to stand up but stumbled before your legs gave out putting you back on the floor.
Hazel tried to grab at your hand to help you up but you retracted your hand on instinct. “Hold my hand.”
“Absolutely not.”
Silvie barked out a laugh- “damn rejected!”
Hazel looked at you- her big blue eyes filling with hurt. Fuck. You didn't want to have to see those sad puppy dog eyes. You took hold of her hand and let her pull you up. If you thought the world was spinning when you were sitting, now it was like you were on a tilt-a-whirl. “Shit.” you couldn't keep yourself upright and leaned into Hazel so you didn't fall back to the ground.
“Uh- I’m gonna take her to get some water.” Hazel sounded very concerned but you giggled. This was so embarrassing. Not only were you weak in front of your enemy- but also your crush. “Oh my god, I think I broke her!”
PJ scoffed, “You just gave her like a concussion- she’ll be fine.” You nodded to agree with PJ.
“Oh my god oh my god oh my god…” Hazel mumbled as she walked you out of the gym.
“I’m so so sorry.” She continued to apologize to all the girl's bathrooms where she propped you against a sink. “I didn’t think I was that strong.” She gathered some paper towels and got them wet, dabbing them to your forehead.
In all honesty, you feel fine now. The dizziness was gone and replaced with a dull ache. But you were kinda enjoying Hazel being all over you.
“It’s fine. Don't worry about it.”
“If you want to hit me I get it- I deserve it.”
You laughed, “Yeah you can say that again.” You needed to practice biting your damn tongue.
“I’m so sorry- I can’t believe I did that- I always do something stupid around you. I didn’t mean to hit you that hard- I just can’t like to focus with you around and I’m sorry-” Hazel continued to ramble and you started to zone out a little before saying the only thing running through your mind.
“You stole my table”
Hazel stopped talking and looked at you. “No, I didn’t”
“Yes, you did.”
“What are you talking about? I’ve never stolen anything let alone a table- I don’t even know where I would’ve put-”
“No Hazel, my seat. In the lunch room.”
She just stared at you and blinked.
“You stole my spot- where I have sat every day for the last and you spilled coffee on my backpack and hit me in the face with volleyballs and… and… and now you gave me a concussion with your fists.”
Hazel groaned and moved away from you holding her face in her hands, “Oh my god you must think I hate you.”
“Well yeah!”
Hazel just groaned again. “I just like you.”
“Oh yeah sure- wait- what did you just say?”
“I just like you okay,” She kicks the floor and starts to pout, “You’re just like really cool and like always around and you make me nervous.”
“Oh my god.”
“I know- i’m sorry- I knew you hated me cause of all that stuff”
“Oh my god-”
Hazel made more inhuman nosies as you started to laugh.
“Hazel what the actual fuck- you like me? You like me? For how long?”
Hazel stopped with the noises “I don’t know? Like freshman year? Why?”
“Despite all of the mishaps, and how much they pissed me off- I could not stop crushing on you… since freshman year.”
Hazels jaw literally dropped, “What, no way?”
“Yes way. Why didnt you just like talk to me?”
“Well everytime I did I would somehow manage you hurt you.”
You shook your head and laughed lighty, “thats actually fair, I can’t blame you for that.”
She cracked a bit of a smile, relief from the last few seconds flooding over the both of you.
“This is crazy.”
You laughed, “it is. And to think all it took was you punching me to the ground.”
She groaned, “god I really am sorry-”
“It’s fine- definitely worth it.”
She smiled, “now what?”
You shrugged, “I don’t know- we’ve wasted almost four years it seems like so theres no point in wasting any more.”
She gave you a dopey look and figeted with the rings on her fingers.
“Hazel come here.” She followed your instructions obditally and stood in front of you- close enough that you could feel the gentle wind of her breath.
You placed your hands on her shoulders, not entirely sure the right way to go about this- and maybe this was moving a bit fast and the common sense had gotten knocked out of your head but at this point you were kicking yourself for not making a move over the entrieity of your highschool career.
Her eyes were open, glued to your lips.
“Gotta start making up for all that lost time.” you leaned forward, barley brushing your lips together, when you pulled back Hazel stood completely still with her eyes shut tight. You smiled to yourself. “Do you want to..” Hazel keep her eyes shut but nodded.
You leaned again, this time trying to add in some movement. It was painfully obvious that neither of you really knew what you were doing. Hazel seemed to have a sudden surge in confidence after accidentally (maybe?) bitting your lower lip which drew some type of sound from you. She stepped forward, pushing you aagint the bathroom sink and putting the two of you in a much more intainte position.
Despite the awkwardness and surprise, it felt nice- or good? Something like that. You stopped anazlying everything and instead focused on the fact that their was a very attractive girl running her hands down your back and letting your shirt cover her finger tips as she explored you.
The second you started to thank whatever god was a above that it was after school hours so the building was essentially vacant- the door brust open, followed by two very loud “fuck”s.
Hazel rushed back away from you, her face already blushing a bright pink.
PJ and Josie stood in the doorway- matching faces of shock painting their features.
“No fucking way Hazel is getting puss before us.” PJ rolled her eyes.
“Uh- sorry we just uh- you know- wanted to make sure you were good.” Josie was doing a horrible job hiding her uncomforatbleness as she questioned you with a thumbs up.
You bit your lip to stop from laughing and gave her a thumbs up back, “Doing great in here. Thanks- but if you wouldn’t mind leaving-”
“Oh yeah! Yeah! For sure- we’ll let you two lovebirds get back to it.” Josie did a half bow before turning and pushing PJ out the door.
You laughed as hazel just looked mortified, “we’ll continue this later, I think we should get back to the club though- kinda wanna see you lay some bitchs out.”
She took a deep breath and patted down her shirt, before looking in the mirror and fixing her hair.
You gave her another thumbs up before the two of you left the bathroom to go back to the gym.

Practice || Van Palmer Part 2
I am so sorry 😀 University has been insane with hurricanes, car accidents and the like!
dialog prompts:
"Hold my hand" "Absolutely not" "We should kiss, for like practice" "I've liked you since you hit me with a rock at recess in 1st grade." "fuck you"
Characters: Van x Reader, the whole team
Word count: 2564
That night after Kevyn dropped you off at home you were pretty drunk, and now in your room alone to face your thoughts.
You had gotten so close- so close to just knocking down the safety rails and jumping into the universe that is one Van Palmer.
You brushed your teeth, changed, chugged a glass of water to avoid a killer hangover, and then flopped face-first into your bed.
You pictured Van, looking at you- though you after you had all but confessed to her. She had to know right? Even she isn’t that dense. Or maybe she is when it comes to herself and not characters on a screen.
You huffed and rolled onto your back. This was ridiculous- you’re being ridiculous. First of all, you never even told her you were gay. And she never even hinted at knowing it. You hadn’t even told her about your own questioning thoughts when she came out to you in the 8th grade.
Still, the look on her face from the party was haunting you. That look had only been shared between you a handful of times. The only other time that it had felt that intense was a time that neither of you had talked about since it happened in the 10th grade.
You turned, looking towards your old tv on the ground next to your dresser. You could see the scene playing out in front of you from years ago.
You were studying, well watching a movie. Lottie had loaned you Can’t Buy Me Love. You both had already seen it so Van was talking through the whole thing, riffing off of the cheesy lines. When the end played, and when Roland and Cindy finally got together, Van stayed quiet.
“I wonder what that’s like.”
“What? Riding a lawn mower? It’s not all it cracked up to be.”
“No- to be kissed like that.” You wouldn’t let her change the subject.
“Oh.”
“It seems… nice.” you needed to play coy, but you knew it was kinda of obvious what you were trying to accomplish.
“I guess… But like- what if you missed? I would die of embarrassment.” you had her hooked.
“Yeah, I feel so behind. Like everyone has already kissed or done more with people in school. I don’t want to get to that point and then embarrass myself.”
Van laughed, “With your aim- I’d prepare for that.”
“Hey!” You laughed and hit her arm, leaving it closer to her than it had been before. “We should kiss, for like practice.”
Her eyes widen, but you could tell her smile took effort now. She held eye contact with you, trying to size up your motivations. You tried to hold a look of passive determination. “That’s a good idea. Practice makes perfect right?”
“Right. So how do we do this?” you felt your hands start to clam up.
“I think you should just close your eyes- and I’ll just like- do it.”
You cocked your eyebrow at her, “But then I don’t get aiming practice.”
She rolled her eyes, “Okay, I’ll go first and we’ll switch.”
You nodded before readjusting to kneel in front of her. “Let's do this.” You closed your eyes. You couldn’t say that the first kiss was anything to write home about.
Van had basically just pressed her lips against yours for a second before pulling away.
You opened one eye, giving her a questioning look. Her cheeks were already a bright red against her freckles. “That’s the best you can do, Palmer? Expecting more from a self-proclaimed “lady killer”.
A little of the stress she was holding in her posture went away with an over-dramatic sigh. “Okay, you try asshole.”
You laughed but nodded, “close your eyes.”
She obeyed and readjusted. You tried to remember how people kissed in all the rom-coms the two of you had watched. You wanted to outdo her peck and maybe make her feel that this was a practice session.
You leaned in. And instead of just pressing your lips against hers, you left them parted until you had just started to make contact before using a bit more force and closing your lips on hers.
To your pleasant surprise, Van seemed intrigued as she leaned in, following your lips as you pulled away. You couldn’t help but smile as she whispered “Wait”, her lips brushing yours as she spoke.
You let her kiss you again, this time she didn’t seem as shy, she copied you, moving her lips against yours. In no way were you in sync. It was messy and a little wetter than you’d care to admit- but honestly how could you complain?
Van broke away from you. Her eyes had the same competitive look she had during games. Neither of you said anything- just stared at each other, slightly out of breath, both pink-faced.
Then the phone rang on your dresser behind you, Natalie was calling to see if you wanted to hang out- asking if Van was with you because she hadn’t picked up her phone.
It was a bittersweet memory now but you still cherished it.
The weekend passed- this year's prom fell before the state championship game which meant you’d actually get to go this year unlike last.
Most of the team already had dates, or at least those who seemed to want one. Jackie had all but forced Shauna to go with Randy but everyone knew she had no interest in him whatsoever. Natalie was going with Kevyn, which was great because it meant that you’d have a ride. Lottie, Van, and you had played to go stag together- so at least you’d have company in your singleness.
You adjusted some details on your outfit before hearing a knock on your front door. “You look great and you're going to have a great time.” You smiled to yourself in the mirror reassuringly before heading out the door.
Van was waiting for you outside, she wore a brown tweed suit with a vest instead of a jacket. Under the vest, she had a light sage green button-down and a stripped brown tie. She looked you up and down and let out a low whistle. “Someone cleans up nice.”
You smiled and started to walk towards her, swinging your body lightly side to side, “I’m not the only one.” You wrapped your arm around her shoulder as she rested hers on the small of your back, leading you to the car. She opened the back door for you of Kevyn’s shitty car before running to the other side and letting herself in.
“You look so hot.” Natalie winked at you from the front seat.
You winked back at her and blew her a kiss. “I do it for you, honey,”
She laughed and turned back towards the road as Kevyn drove away.
-
As much as you enjoyed watching couples make out and guys try to impress girls with uncoordinated dancing, the excitement of prom was dying out fast. Your mind was focused on how hot, sweaty, and smelly the enclosed space had become. You stood by the double doors of the gym waiting for Van to come back. She had gone to say hi to someone in one of her classes.
You could see her talking to the girl. She was pretty enough, looked confident, and based on Van's laughter she must be funny too. When Van leaned in to place her hand on the girl's arm laughing- you felt a spark of jealousy and figured it was time that you wanted to get some air outside.
You walked out to the spot behind the school where you and the team would smoke after practice. You had no reason to really be upset- the night had been fun and you had great friends. But you couldn't deny the sting that hung on despite your best efforts. You sat on the ground, wallowing in your thoughts for at least three songs. You could still hear the music from the gym though it was muffled. Your eyes were glued to your feet, expensive dress shoes kicking at the dirt.
Two new feet appeared before yours. “Can I bum a smoke?” You rolled your eyes, not laughing for probably the first ever ever at one of Van's quips.
“Don’t have any.” She shrugged and moved to lean against the wall next to you.
“Good thing I’m always prepared.”
After a few seconds, a lighter clicked above you before a lit joint was waved in front of your face. Who were you to deny a kind gesture?
You stood up and took the joint from her fingers, bringing it to your lips and holding it before sighing the smoke out dramatically. The two of you stayed in those positions for a bit, just passing the joint back and forth.
“Why’d you leave?” She asked. You could hear her trying hard to make sure she wasn’t coming off as probing or aggressive.
You shrugged, “Wanted some air.”
She nodded and pushed off the wall. “Would you be up for a dance? We can stay out here.”
Finally meeting her eyes with a questioning look she raised her eyebrows in a smile and held out a freckled hand towards you. You bit back a smile when she started to wiggle her eyebrows. “I’d love to.” you let her take ahold of your hand as you brought your other to her shoulder.
As the songs changed over the two of you got closer and closer. Forgetting the idea of personal space. Your mood lifted as it always did when you were with Van. You leaned onto her as she threw her head back and pulled you flush against her body. The two of your bodies moved to the music, not in time but in feeling. You laughed as she spun you, returning the favor before once again ignoring the idea of personal space and clasping each other like you were afraid if you loosened your grip you’d wake up from whatever kind of dream this was.
The lights shining through the window turned to a faded blue from the bright gold, signaling the beginning of a slow song. Without needing to voice the action, Van slid her hand into yours and slowly hovered on your waist with the other. You smiled, and she gave you an odd melancholy look before signing and resting her forehead gently on yours. You shut your eyes and reached your free hand up to comb through her long red hair.
The dance inside ended but the two of you didn't stop swaying to music only you could hear. The air had begun to cool as time passed, giving you a reason to try and close the space even more between the two of you.
“Van?! (Y/N)?” You broke apart at Natalie’s yell for the two of you, she was probably looking for you to leave, Kevyn being all of your rides to the afterparty.
“Shit- I forgot we still have to go to that stupid fucking party.” Van groaned as she rolled her eyes.
“Hey, it’ll be a good time. Besides we just have to say hi and then we can leave.” You grabbed her hands and started to walk backward toward the school parking lot.
She gave you an unimpressed look but nevertheless, let you pull her along gently.
Natalie, Van, Kevyn, Lottie, Laura Lee, and you all tried to squeeze into his tiny four-person car.
“Where did you go? I was looking for you for like an hour?” Natalie asked Van, turning back from her spot on Lottie's lap in the front seat.
“You know, dances aren't my thing- just needed some fresh air.” Van shrugged, barely visible due to how you and Laura Lee were pushing into her sides.
“At least we managed to get you to come to this one. You missed Randy getting caught spiking the punch though.”
“Damn, that sounds therapeutic.”
“You should’ve seen his face. Looked like a ghost when Ms. Jackson grabbed his collar” Lottie laughed, joining the conversation. “Definitely made my night.”
Van hummed in agreement, being disengaged which wasn’t normal for her.
You nudged her shoulder but she just brushed you off for the rest of the ride.
The party was hosted by none other than Jackie at her huge ass mansion. Van had made a beeline start for the drinks in the kitchen when the car pulled to a stop. You had to practically chase her through the crowd of teens in the house.
When you caught up to her she was pouring about four shots of tequila into a cup with a splash of orange juice. Her jaw was clenched. Her whole demeanor had shifted. You placed your hand on top of hers holding the cup. “What's up? Do you want to leave?” She shook her head and avoided your eyes, glancing around the room. You sighed and she rolled her eyes before gesturing to the stairs leading upstairs.
Van led you upstairs where she knocked on every door, checking if any were unoccupied. Unsurprisingly it took a few tries.
The room y’all had found must have been one of the many guest rooms in the home. A huge bed was in the center of the room with dollhouse-like furniture around the walls.
She put her cup on a dresser before face-planting into the bed. You couldn't help the laugh that burst out of you, “Van! What’s wrong?”
You sat down on the foot of the bed as she rolled over to her back. She tilted her head down towards you before looking back to the ceiling and groaning. “It’s nothing. Like it's actually dumb and I’m just a total idiot.”
She tensed as you set your hand on her leg, “I’m sure it's not dumb. Just talk to me about it.”
She grumbled as she sat up and looked at you with the frown of an insolent child. “This is embarrassing and it may ruin everything.”
“Well Jesus, now you sound like you killed someone.”
She looked at you as if to tell you ‘Seriously?’. You nudged her to continue but she just ran her hands together and looked down.
“Van… You.. You know I love you right?” You said it as a way to try to open her up but it held the double meaning, or hope, that this is what she was talking about.
“That's the thing.” Your heart sank- could she tell how you felt? Had it upset her so much?
“Oh.”
“Yeah…”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable-”
“You shouldn’t be sorry! It’s my fault. I’m the one making you uncomfortable-”
“Wait-”
“I mean I’m the one that looked to far into things and-”
“Van-”
“It’s not your fault that-”
“Van!”
“-I am madly, madly, in love with you.”
“Oh my god!”
“I know- mhM!” You cut her off by literally throwing yourself onto her with so much force you landed on top of her, pinning her to the bed with your lips.
“Thank fuck this conversation was a misunderstanding because I have been into you for so long it’s been torture,” you whispered against her lips.
You could feel her smile and chuckle before telling you “I told you that I've liked you since you hit me with a rock at recess in 1st grade.”
“Fuck you.”

Hii!! Hope I’m not bothering you, but I wanted to ask if you did non binary reader?
I can- I also can put it in the descriptions of posts that could be read as enby or fem reader. I tend to give reader fem presentation and use lesbian terms because I am a fem lesbian but I'd be so down to write an enby specific fic if requested!

Hello, how are you feeling today? I hope you are feeling amazing.
I just dropped by to tell you a couple of things, I loved your Misty oneshot, your writing is beautiful.
And secondly, what made you write again? From what I saw you recently took up writing again, I hope I'm not bothering you, of course.
I hope you have a great day. 💙
Hello deary! I am very busy right now- One of my jobs right now is website design and the organization I'm working for keeps expanding what they want so I have been basically playing catch up all the time.
Also thank you! I was really worried about writing for Misty because to me she is a untouchable character lol she's written so perfectly in the show.
And I started writing again because I really used to love it. I've changed a lot since I stopped writing but I was missing the creative outlet of writing. I haven't been doing any type of art and it's been draining so I finally gave in and wanted to try it again <3

Practice || Van Palmer Part 1
Guys went a little crazy and I think this will be well over 3k words so I'm gonna split it in two parts- also I swear I don't hate Jackie- she's just such an easy villain.
dialog prompts:
"Hold my hand" "Absolutely not" "We should kiss, for like practice" "I've liked you since you hit me with a rock at recess in 1st grade." "fuck you"
Characters: Van x Reader, the whole team
Word count: 1568
You had known Van since kindgerraden. You two had been table mates and caused the teacher so many headaches that she moved you to opposite sides of the classroom, which of course only made you two more disruptive. By some miracle, or curse depending on who you asked, The two of you had been in all the same classes leading up to high school, where you still ended up having a good amount together.
She had wanted to be a goalie in soccer so you had to join too, obviously. JV freshman year introduced you to the rest of your high school friend group. Everyone got along as well as you could expect for a small-town soccer team. Although there was definitely still the fair share of petty arguments and drama.
“Come on guys, focus!” Jackie yelled in her normal peppy voice across the field. You grumbled, doing your best not to glare at her.
This practice had fallen apart almost as soon as it started. Jackie and Tai had gotten into yet another screaming match in the locker room, splitting the team up and leaving tension hanging over all of you.
You tried another play, which ended in Natalie completely knocking down Shanua- starting another yelling match.
You stood with a hand on your hip. Waiting for Coach Ben to call it for the day.
“Nice Ass lady” Van whispered as she approached you from behind before breaking into a chuckle.
“Take a picture, it’ll last longer.” You smirked over your shoulder and winked at her, causing her to fan herself with her hand. “How long do you think before practice is called?”
The redhead tapped her chin pretending to think, “I’ll give it two more minutes- either Coach calls it or Tai decks Jackie out cold.”
You let out a snort, “If Tai takes Jackie- Shauna will be on her before she had the chance to run.”
“I’d pay to see that.”
“I’m sure you would.”
She gave you a cheeky grin.
Sure enough within 2 minutes Coach called it, telling everyone to take the rest of the day and the weekend to cool off.
~
“So… Natalie, did you mean to knock down Shauna or was it just a stellar accident?” Van asked Natalie before taking a drag of the joint between her fingers.
This was a semi-normal occurrence. Nat, Van, Lottie and you hitting a joint behind the school before leaving practice.
“Can I plead the fifth?” You laughed as Van passed you the joint. “Besides- I barely tapped her.”
You let out a puff of smoke before speaking up again, “Well if we’re still going to that party tonight you better watch out for Jackie's wrath.”
Lottie giggled, “I don't think she even knows how to throw a punch.”
Natalie finished off the joint before flicking it to the ground and stomping it into the ground with her boot. “Guess we’ll have to find out” She gave her most daring grin.
~
You went home to change and get ready, opting to waste most of your time laying on your bed zoning out to the radio. At 9:30 you went outside to wait for Kevyn to pull up. The major perk of whatever the fuck he had going with Natalie meant you all had a ride to every party.
Sure enough, he pulled up in his semi-shitty car (not that you were one to judge) with Natalie, Van, and Lottie already loaded in. You smooshed into the back seat next to Van who like usual wore an oversized T-Shirt under her jean jacket and tan pants.
As small town trashy as it was, most parties were either held at a few designated houses or, more often, in the woods about two miles from the school. Kevyn pulled up and parked with all the other cars, letting all of you get out. “If you want rides back I’ll only ask you once before I leave.” Kevyn locked his car before wrapping an arm around Natalie's shoulders and heading towards the bonfire.
Lottie made a gagging sound next to you, “I just don’t get what she sees in him.”
“I hear ya Lot. But to be fair I feel that about all her boy toys.” Van added.
You shrugged, noncommittally and started towards a keg, “I don’t know about you guys but I need a drink.”
Lottie spotted some people from her classes and left to catch up with them, leaving you and Van alone.
It’s not that parties weren't for you per se, but Van didn’t much care for them. She’d rather be at your place getting high and watching old VHSs than be surrounded by fellow students after what was already required for school.
You two tended to stay off to the side, making fun of the drunk kids and freshmen who really weren’t ready to be here yet.
You were sitting on one of the log benches, resting your head on Van’s shoulder, laughing at the stupid commentary she was providing before you heard Jackies yell ring out over the noise, “What’d you say Bitch?” You stood up from your spot, rushing towards the scene, Van hot on your heels. Jackie was pushing Natalie away from her, Kevyn trying (not well) to hold Natalie back.
“I said, you’re a stuck-up cunt.” Natalie spat at her.
You smacked your forehead as Van grumbled next to you, “Seriously Nat? Not helpful.”
The two of you weren’t the only partygoers who had come to see the commotion. A circle had formed around the two. “You need to watch yourself, so you don’t end up like your trailer trash parents.”
You could feel Van tense next to you before she jumped between them, “Okay- That’s enough, yellowjackets meeting. Right now.”
Natalie had a fire in her eyes, Jackie's cruelty, and Van's one of disappointment. Natalie huffed but followed Van, prompting you, Lottie, Shauna, and Jackie to follow. You hadn’t seen Tai all night and assumed she probably didn’t show up to avoid being around Jackie and Shauna.
Once you were all a small distance away from the rest of the party Van stopped and clapped her hands together, “alright- let’s talk this shit out before the ally incident from last season repeats itself.”
“There’s really nothing to say other than the apology Natalie owes me.” Jackie started, earning the start of more yelling.
“Hey!” Van yells over the others, “Jackie- you and Tai agreed to move on so now do it.” She rubs down her face with your head, obviously tired of this shit. “Why don’t we do what we did last year before nationals? Do the camp thing where we all have to say something nice about each other.”
As the others protested you moved forward in front of Jackie, “Come on guys- it helped us last time! Let’s try it.” You gave Van a look, trying to show her you were doing your best.
Nat rolled her eyes but nevertheless turned to Shauna and plastered on a smile.
You looked back to Jackie, she seemed apprehensive. You two weren’t really close, but you were civil and had nothing personally against her. She was just very sheltered compared to Van, Nat, Lottie, and you. And you assumed Shauna but you weren’t really sure.
“Jackie…. I think you’re a great leader.” Okay, you had to be better than that, “The way you can rally the team is impressive…. And I really love your style.”
Better right?
Sure enough, she smiled and thanked you before returning the favor.
You and Van had each other last, which was definitely for the best because you were crossed enough that there was no way you could stay serious with her.
She stepped in front of you and smirked, “(y/n), I've liked you since you hit me with a rock at recess in 1st grade."
"fuck you"
She barked out a laugh and lightly hit your arm, “What? It’s true!”
You rolled your eyes and crossed your arms over your chest, “ First of all it was an accident, Secondly I barely hit you, you were just dramatic.”
“Mmmm, that's what you wanted Mrs. Todd to think.”
You shook your head but couldn't help from joining in her laughter. Her laughter was contagious you swear to god.
“Okay okay, my turn. Tell me how great I am.”
You tapped your chin, pretending to think, “I don’t know? Maybe your rugged good looks? Your amazing sense of humor? Your seemingly unlimited supply of weed? There’s just so much to pick from. Wait I know, I love that you’re the most fucking outstanding, compassionate, beautiful person I’ve ever met.”
It had been meant to be light-hearted, and it was. But now that the words were hanging in the air they felt a lot heavier, like more of the truth than you had intended had sneaked in.
Both of you had fallen into a delicate silence, the rest of the team and party fading into the background. She was still smiling, more earnestly than you had seen in a long time. “Thank you.”
You give her a half smile, “It’s just the truth.”
Natalie wrapped her arms around both of you, missing the fact that she was interrupting a private moment, “Palmer, you never cease to amaze me. Jackie actually apologized.”
Van smiled, “that’s great.” It came out strained and you tried not to cringe.
