Okay y’all seemed to like my take on Radiostatic as a metaphor for the codependent relationship between serial killers and mass media, so here have a little something I wrote that’s been floating around looking for a fic to fit into.

If he’d been around when Alastor was alive, Vox could’ve made him a star.

“You really mean you didn’t have a nickname?” he asks him one day as they sit in the greasy little diner that has become their usual haunt.

Alastor rolls his eyes. “Of course not. I never got caught.”

“That doesn’t mean anything. Jack the Ripper never got caught. The Zodiac Killer never got caught. The Alphabet Killer, the West Mesa Bone Collector, the Axeman of New Orleans—he came along before you did, and from your neck of the woods!”

“How do you know so much about serial killers?” This with a knowing smirk and a little cock of one eyebrow.

Vox’s face splits into a wide, camera-ready smile. “Babe. I’m a TV anchor. Serial killers are our bread and butter.”

God, Vox can just picture it. He knows just how he’d play it, too: hands folded on the desk in front of him. Little crease between his brows. Somber frown, just a touch of grief in his eyes to show he grasps the seriousness of these ghastly crimes. He’d be sure to warn those with sensitive stomachs to change the channel (don’t change the channel. Don’t look away, never look away. You can’t bring yourself to look at anyone but me).

“Make sure your little ones are tucked in bed, folks. What I’m about to tell you all is highly disturbing.”

You can’t oversell this stuff. You’ve gotta play it cool, make sure the audience knows you take no pleasure in discussing the awful things these sick, twisted men do. Keep them biting their nails. Make sure they cling to you for the safety of the cold, hard truth.

You know Alastor really presents himself with a condescending I’m above this all attitude and doesn’t seem to indulge much in his sillier side and it really got me thinking about how he ever tolerated Vox and all his expressiveness and then I remembered this:

I think the more comfortable he becomes with someone the less he presents himself as serious and I’m just imaging him and Vox leaving silly little drawings for each other all the time and Vox being delighted by Alastor’s sense of humor and I just-
