Learning Toy: Monster
By Paola & Min
An interactive toy to make learning so much fun for children.
Monster is an interactive toy which stimulates children to recognize shapes and match them freely. With lights, fun movements and friendly sounds, kids can learn colors, shapes and animal sounds. This new and hands-on monster will be as much fun as it looks. Ideal for toddlers during shape recognition and early geometry.
How it works?
Matching the different colors and shapes on the yellow body.
Eyes light up as ears are attached.
Body will vibrate when nose is attached.
When ears and nose are attached together, you can hear the animal sound.

Project #4. Serial Communication
a Voodoo doll
vimeo
For this assignment, I learned how Arduino and Processing communicate with each other. Still confusing, but I can make some interesting toy via changing some codes from one of tutorials. And my team mate, Paola, helps me build the code.
Process
01. Wrote Arduino code. I used ‘ if ‘ statement. If Arduino receives specific signal from the processing, certain LED will be turned on and off.

02. Wrote Processing code. Draw figures to make ‘Voodoo doll” on the screen. And like Arduino code, I also used ‘ if ‘ statement so that send different signals to Arduino when mouse is clicked on certain area. There are so many code repetition in my code. Because every time ‘ if ‘ statement is run, new figures are drawn again. There might be efficient way to do this task. I need to dig into codes.

03. Anyway, “Voodoo Doll” is created!

vimeo
04. Prepare a nasty man. Oh I find hiding guy in the paper back!

05. When you click the toy’s body on the screen, the nasty man’s body feels pain! Woohoo!

Project #3. Make a toy
Candy lover plant
vimeo
Process
01. Prepared a box and paper flowers

02. I used a ultrasonic sensor and five RGB LEDs.

03. Made a circuit and tested if it works well before joining together with box.

04. Made a sketch. If something comes nearby, the LEDs start light up and change the color according to the distance.

“Hey, sweetie~!!!”

“Here is a candy~!!”

Case study #1. Interactive dancing traffic lights
Interactive dancing traffic lightsmake waiting more entertaining
via Dezeen
youtube
An interactive installation in Lisbon aims to encourage pedestrians to wait until it's safe to cross the road by making the traffic lights "dance" using motion capture technology. Car brand Smart teamed up with advertising agency BBDO Germany to create a special pedestrian crossing light in the Portugese capital, featuring a red stick figure that dances to attract the attention of pedestrians who might otherwise walk out into the road."We believe that smart ideas can turn the city into a better place," said Mercedes, the German car manufacturer behind the Smart brand. "Like a dancing traffic light that makes people watch and wait rather than walk through the red light. For more safety."

Project #2. Enhancement the homemade switch
Ghost lamp
vimeo
Process
01. Prepared a circuit and a tissue ghost

02. I used a Photoresistor so that it could sense light and turn on/off the LEDs through it.

03. Covered LEDs with a tissue ghost.

04. Made a sketch. If the surroundings are bright, the LEDs will be off. But when it is dark, LED will be turned on and start blinking.

05. Turned off the light, then ghost appeared.

+++ I made another shape as well, LED balloon. But the output was not what I want. Its lights look like a pimple, so I throw it away ;(

Project #1. Object with Home Made Switch
When a butterfly meet a flower
vimeo
Process
01. Just drew the simple circuit.
02. Prepared two flowers and set a LED lamp on only one flower.
03. Connected a flower 1 to a register and a positive side of 9V battery.
04. Joined the flower 2.
05. linked two flowers(by yellow wire) and a negative side of battery(by black wire).
06. Put wires out of flower 2 and made a little gap between them.
07. Flowers are prepared now.
07. Let’s make switch; Lovely butterfly!
08. Fixed a nail on the back.
09. Well, completed!
10. When a butterfly meet a flower, flower is shining.
(But I have to touch carefully because conductive area is too small! ;-( )
** For fun. I made a lot of mistake during the recording. Here is Blooper cut ;-) **
