The bloody episode just before this making it A Point that Marinette needs to see the one boy hiding behind both masks.

gabriel should have made the wish in the s5 finale. that's not the part i'm mad about, at all. I always assumed he would make the wish. when a story sets up stakes like that, the most satisfying outcome is always that the audience gets to see the big bad can't-come-back-from-this end of the world event actually take place--and then see how the heroes still win. the most satisfying ending - the only satisfying ending, imo - for the agreste arc is for gabriel to firstly succeed in making his wish to create a new world, and then for adrien and marinette to still somehow find each other in the new world and manage to reverse it. preferably through the power of love (always so strong).

what i'm mad about is the changing goalpost around "the wish" and what it does and whether or not it's okay for someone to make one. the entire series, it's been reiterated over and over again that the reason why a wish is bad is because no one person should have absolute control over reality; no matter the wish, that's too much power. every wish is going to have consequences, and no one should be allowed to decide who lives and dies etc. but in the s5 finale, a wish is made, and no one really blinks twice about it. even in the cover story ladybug tells adrien, she tells him that gabriel made a wish, and they never really address that again. they're all living in gabriel's new world now, and that's just the way it is. it's fine. in a show where time travel has been well established, no one considers a wish a big enough deal to try and change what happened. (I know in the london special marinette brings this up and bunnyx says that the timeline is fixed, but like. my point here is that no one considers this a big enough deal to do anything except for one character asking one question about time travel and then dropping it forever.)

ladybug and chat noir failed at their mission, which was to prevent a wish from being made. and instead of offering the heroes a chance to face this failure and find a way to still succeed despite the odds, the narrative responded to this failure by diffusing the gravity and urgency of it. the heroes failed, a wish was made, and everyone just moved on with their lives because it turns out that it wasn't a big deal actually. what?! that's what i'm mad about. it's such a huge disservice to the future of the show - why should I care about preventing Lila from making a wish, when it was fine when Gabriel did it? - as well as lowering the stakes of previous seasons retroactively. what were we fighting for all this time? they lost. and it didn't even matter.
