I wanna talk a little about Why this scene has me in such a chokehold. Why it's so important that it does come at the very end.
Tumblr media
We're going under the cut because this is probably going to get long
Now if any of you have read any of my AUs you know that most every one of them has a scene like this. Offside most of all. I love Mary and kate's relationship and it's my absolute favourite Parent-child relationship in the Bridgerton series. Because they are mother and daughter by choice.
But with that choice comes the assumption or the feeling that one day, one day, one of them could choose not to have this relationship. Especially for Kate who, even in the book, craves belonging to something. Even though she keeps her emotions so tightly guarded, she wants to desperately to be loved.
And Mary loves her. Kate knows there's no difference in the way Mary treats her and Edwina, but there's a tiny voice in the back of her head that says If she chose to love you she could choose not to so easily. It's why we see this look on her face when Mary starts defending them all
Tumblr media
This reinforces to Kate that Mary lost something because of her. Mary gave up an entire life to be her mother and that's a debt she can never repay. Ever.
But she can do this. She can force down the feelings threatening to burst out of her because she owes this life to Mary, to Edwina. The life she took from them. And of course, that's not what Mary would ever want Kate to do, but she's never given the choice.
And with that comes upset for Mary. Mary who met a tiny girl who needed love and affection, and fell in love with her as much as she did the girl's father. But Kate, especially after her father's death keeps such distance between them. I imagine a shift happened after Mr Sharma died. When Kate shouldered the responsibilities and took the place of the man they'd both loved. And she did it in part, i think, because she saw this as a way to be useful to Mary. Useful to a family she didn't feel she quite belonged to.
Because without her Appa, while Kate felt that Mary was her mother and Edwina was her sister, she didn't truly belong with them. Even though Kate kind of craves the motherly affection Mary gives to her because she's lonely but she's convinced herself she isn't.
I think what begins in episode 5 and continues is episode 6, is Mary waking up to exactly how much Kate has sacrificed for them. What she's done. You can see, that Mary notices Kate struggling earlier in episode 5, but then in Episode 6 the look on Mary's face when she realises that Kate can't deny she's in love with Anthony.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mary's "You have kept so very much from me." comes from a moment of stress, and panic because what she really means is How could you not tell me you felt this way? I could have helped you.
And we see it again, here
Tumblr media
aWhen she sees the look on kate's face when Edwina walks away from her. When she sees how it's tormenting her to have broken the most important relationship in her life and still feel this way about him. But she doesn't know what to do because Kate won't let her close enough to her, Kate won't talk about it.
It's not a coincidence that Mary talks about Kate when she and Anthony are alone together. She knew what she was doing.
But here's why the affirmation of Mary's love is so important at the very end:
Kate has been waiting. Waiting to fulfil her obligation to Mary, waiting to repay this debt, waiting for the fact that one day she would do something big enough and ugly enough that Mary would stop loving her. That Mary would finally see that the life she gave up for Kate, wasn't worth it. That Kate didn't deserve the love she craved from her. And so, to have all of this happen, for her to have caused yet more shame and scandal for Mary and for Mary to still love her: That's what needed to happen. It's what they both needed.
And finally, Kate cracks too
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And with that, she finds the strength and the belonging she wanted, in part
Even if Mary is scared for her, when she sees the way people react to her and Anthony together. She's scared that kate will stumble. Stumble the very first time she's shown people what she wanted, and fall back into denying herself everything. Scared that Anthony doesn't feel the same way, that she's going to get her heart broken
Tumblr media
But then she sees Kate, and she sees how happy she is, how happy they both are, and you can see, even in the background, she's happy and proud of her daughter for finally realising she is enough. She doesn't owe her life to anyone else, it's hers to do with as she wishes. And it's so beautiful
Tumblr media
This spiralled wildly out of control but as @jeanvanjer is fond of saying: For me, Kate and Mary is one of the true love stories of this series.

Pride & Prejudice fic recs Part 1
A hit, a very palpable hit by Shem words: 149357
Mr Bennet’s family is larger than just Mr Collins (thank heavens). One of his sisters, Clara, who has been distant for some ten years, re-emerges into his life demanding the company of one his daughters. Both Mr and Mrs Bennet consider Kitty expendable so it is she who is dispatched right in the middle of the most exciting period of her life, after all how often does a regiment of soldiers visit Merton? But Clara’s presence will effect more than just Kitty.
Personal addition: It’s one of my favorites ❤️. So this is almost a double recommendation. Also listen to me people the OMC Lord Ashbourne is MAGICAL! MUST read! One of the best fics in the whole fandom!
The Brighton Effect by Shem words: 74644
Kitty’s chance to go to Brighton with Lydia may just change everyone’s fate.
Part 1 of a series.
Personal addition: Another favorite ❤️, double recommended. It’s a different story but Lord Ashbourne is still one of the characters, therefor yet another MUST read!
The Pemberley Effect by Shem words: 56463
This is a companion/side-along piece to the Brighton Effect.
I wanted to tell the story of Lizzy and Darcy but I found it difficult from a strict Kitty POV (and there are only so many times you can have Kitty lurking in bushes to eavesdrop. I will note which chapters correspond in the Brighton Effect. This chapter corresponds with Chapter Nine.
Lizzy returns from a pleasant and illuminating Derbyshire visit to discover just how close her family came to ruin while she was away.

I remembered to make the post (thank you @atereal!) about how much I love the hand holding scene in Pride & Prejudice (2005).
No, I’m not talking about the Carriage Assistance And Hand Flex scene (though I love that too, I’m not a monster) I’m talking about this scene.
Tumblr media
The scene at the end, in the field, after Darcy has proposed to Elizabeth.
First of all, let’s appreciate how it appears that the roles are reversed and Darcy looks like the delicate Regency-era woman while Elizabeth is the Dashing Gentlemen as she tenderly holds his hand.
Which is incredible, everything about it is. How Elizabeth takes his hand and brings them up to her lips. How suddenly nervous Darcy is, faced with Elizabeth’s affection and the physical show of her love for him. When she takes his hands he is stunned, blinking and swallowing nervously. When she tells him his hands are cold, he doesn’t say anything, clearly stunned into silence, and he just nods slightly in response. He’s just staring at her, shocked in the face of Elizabeth openly showing she cares for him, not just with words but with actions. This is a man who came to the woman he loves to confess his feelings for a second time, this time expecting nothing in return and outright telling her that if she does not love him back he will never mention it again, and suddenly having his love returned when hoped but expected nothing.
But knowing these characters, knowing why this scene is important to them is what I love about this scene, and god it’s such a small thing and easy to miss but I love it.
Darcy has been established as a protective man. Many of his actions come from a desire to protect the people he cares about. He loves and adores his sister and would do anything for her. He sabotages Jane and Bingley’s relationship because he (mistakenly but sincerely) thinks she doesn’t care for him and that it’s an attempt to gain a higher social status, trying to protect Bingley from what Darcy thinks is onesided attraction. He arranges Lydia and Wickham’s marriage so Elizabeth won’t be hurt by the scandal. Darcy wants to help and protect the people he cares about.
But I think that, because of the nature of society, his own personality, and no longer having parents, there haven’t been many who have been protective of him in return. Bingley would probably be the first in line to do so, but it doesn’t seem like there have been many opportunities for it.
So the fact that we have Elizabeth. Who Darcy has just handed his heart to practically on a silver platter. Who could, if she wanted to, destroy him right then and there. Takes his hands into her own, almost taking on the role of the Protective Dashing Gentleman as I mentioned before, notes that his hands are cold and tries to warm them. In a small way, she is establishing a protectiveness over him, as he has over her.
It’s such a minor thing but it’s the subtlest sign that Elizabeth will protect him as much as she can. And we know that Elizabeth is protective of the people she loves, just as Darcy is. And for Darcy, who has had few people being protective over him, this means so much.

I love how the whole time during Mulan they’re talking about how a girl needs to be prim and proper in order to get a man and then at the end of the movie the emporer basically looks at Li Shang and is like, “You dumb bitch. Do you not see that fucking amazing, strong, independent woman right there?”

Why is everybody so upset with Stormy Weather 2? This was like a super important episode??
Seriously guys, I don’t know what the problem is. There are flashback episodes in basically every show, but this was a crazy important marker for Miraculous Ladybug. I’m gonna go into detail about everything that was learned, but I just want to start by saying that what this episode did for us indefinitely was set itself on a timeline. It explicitly stated that everything through Chris Master happened within a year-and-a-half timeframe before this episode. It also set Marinette in a place where she’s officially declared, in writing, that she and Adrien are “just friends.” Like, she used Adrien’s “just a friend” line. And we know how this show is with parallels, so I count that as a pretty big one.
I’m gonna get more into this now though, so here we go.
Right off the bat we have the idea of change. Chloe taunts Marinette with the idea that she’ll never change (and we all know how much Marinette likes to challenge Chloe’s words). The word “change” is something that is brought up throughout the whole episode, so watch out for that.
We have Marinette genuinely reflecting. Like not just thinking on her rooftop and complaining about how Chat Noir is a glutton and would drop his guard for a couple of macaroons, she’s really thinking over her life’s choices. It’s framed in such a different light than the way we normally get our characters thinking.
“Adrien has become a true friend.” “Adrien’s become a friend who I can talk to about anything.” “Can you still be in love with someone even after they become your friend? Do you think I’ll ever be able to tell him that he means much more to me than ‘just a friend?’” This is what Marinette thinks of relationships. She thinks that the friends-to-lovers trope is crap and that you have to dive straight into a relationship. And that’s why whenever Adrien talks about her as a friend she becomes so heartbroken. She doesn’t think it’s a step in the right direction, she thinks it’s completely on the opposite end of the spectrum.
I don’t know WHAT Gabriel is plotting with “Ms. Tsurugi” or whether that means Kagami or her mom, but I’m a little terrified.
“Things may not be going exactly as we had planned, but change can be a good thing.” Gabriel’s first line is about change. Hm.
Nathalie’s entire monologue gives us so much background I don’t even know where to start.
She’s starting to regret having taken the job in the first place
She really, genuinely cares about Adrien
She officially, canonically, is in love with Gabriel and it’s because his dedication to his wife is admirable which show how much of a detail-oriented person Nathalie is because WOW she’s missing the big picture here, and also that there is going to be some major love triangle stuff going on towards the end of this between Gabriel, Emilie, and Nathalie (but how might that work?? Redemption arc??? Prison marriage????)
Emilie’s condition is progressively getting worse
Nathalie is still getting sicker, despite only having used the peacock miraculous once (on-screen)
(Also, side-note, hearing Nathalie speak so much at once was like an out-of-body experience for me and her passionate voice about Gabriel was…something)
Adrien really just wants to talk to his dad about his day and their relationship is so screwed up that he can tell by LESS THAN a side glance that Gabriel doesn’t want to hear it from him. Like geez.
Gabriel can recognize familiar emotions. So…does an emotion from Chat Noir feel the same as emotion from Adrien??? Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
Nooroo just wants to see Gabriel and Adrien happy together. Gabriel is a dick. This is not new information, just needed to be reiterated again.
Also, save Nooroo, please.
Gabriel does in fact have the ability to feel remorse. However, he chooses to ignore it, in his own words “at any price.” The only things worth changing his mind are his family, though he does care about Nathalie too. We’ll see how well that holds up.
“People don’t change, they only grow.” Huh. Episode themes from Gabriel Agreste.
“My father will never change.” YOU GUYS PICKING UP ON A THEME HERE????
Plagg’s “I like people who never change. You always know what to expect!” is first off, adorable, second, reverse psychology. He does this to Adrien consistently throughout the series. Considering he’s the one who keeps trying to change Adrien’s mind about Ladybug, he obviously knows what he’s saying isn’t entirely truthful. But Plagg is an adorable, cheese-loving psychopath. Whatcha gonna do?
On the complete other end of that, Plagg talking Adrien through all the ways he’s changed shows how much he cares about him again.
Why Plagg is defending Gabriel, I don’t know. But this is definitely something to note. Does he really think Gabriel is changing for the better? Is Gabriel supposedly changing for the better? (I vote no) Is he unintentionally setting Adrien up for disappointment in a later episode? Guess we’ll see!
Side note, Plagg pretending not to know Marinette’s name is one of my favorite things. It’s not like he can’t say it because Tikki can talk about Adrien, he just chooses not to. And he knows very well who she is. This was confirmed in Weredad.
The scarf has been brought up again. Everybody note this immediately.
ZAG does, in fact, have somewhat of a legitimate animation budget. That volcano is sick.
Of all the villains to use as a filler, Stormy Weather was a solid choice, you all have to admit. Especially when you contrast the repetition of a villain to the episode’s theme.
Ladybug puns. This has been confirmed.
“A little change is good, don’t you think?” HMMMMMMM. Just think about how this was followed by the line “I love that girl.” HMMMMMMM.
Nino and Alya chill on Alya’s bed. Nino never regrets meeting Alya. He loves his girlfriend. Alya loves her boyfriend. They are one of the sweetest canon couples ever to exist.
Nino has a flirty voice he uses on Alya. This is important information.
I don’t want to get into what would’ve happened had the twins not burst the door open, but I want this thought to be noted.
Nino has been adopted by the Cesaire family.
Chloe literally stands on her rooftop with a bat signal every time there’s an akuma. Obsessive much?
“There’s nobody nicer than me!” *cue reel of Chloe being the worst human in the country* is honestly one of the best jokes in this series.
“Once a villain, always a villain,” has an incredible amount of significance but it can pretty much be summed up into the idea that Chloe doesn’t understand change.
Ladybug knows that she and Chat Noir know each other really well now. She reflects on how much they trust each other, literally with their lives, and how their relationship is the reason they have new powers and fighting abilities.
Also, character development. Did anybody see that super soft look Ladybug gave Chat Noir when he said he always agrees with her? Would Ladybug have stopped to admire anything about Chat Noir 2 seasons ago? HMMMMMM.
I would like it to be noted that professional cinematography equipment is several thousands of dollars and it physically hurts me to think of that camera screen breaking in the cold.
Apparently you can take down a super villain with a photocopier and a pencil. Take notes, people.
Alya’s sisters have an akuma victory dance. More important info.
Marinette has gathered up enough courage to write Adrien a note. Last episode she tried to express her feelings. She very well had it in her to do that again, and what she chose to do was to make it clear that they were just friends. She wants Adrien to know that they’re on the same page. It’s in writing. And in Adrien’s hands.
“Good job, we’ve got ourselves a new and improved Marinette!” Change, anyone???
“She’s always been that way. She never changes.” HMMMMM.
Plagg wants Adrien to move on. He’s genuinely trying to convince him by reminding him of how Ladybug is not interested. But maybe there are other girls out there? Hint hint.
*Looks at valentine from Marinette* “You can’t just change your feelings just like that.” *conveniently timed note from Marinette arrives* GUYS. IT’S CALLED SYMBOLISM. Or something like that. Also foreshadowing.
Now this I need to explain super in-depth because there are so many complaints about this part. Adrien was just looking between the two notes. He knows how Marinette gets around him and he knows how it compares to when she’s talking to Chat Noir or Alya. He remembers things from Troublemaker. And he’s holding the two notes in his hands at that moment. Incredibly similar handwriting. He thinks. He remembers how she had pictures of him in her room. And he consciously knows that the valentine he got in response to his own is not from Ladybug. He knows it’s from someone at school. Doesn’t think, he knows. Adrien has figured it out. “No, Marinette couldn’t possibly be in love with me,” he says sadly with slight question in his voice. “She’s just a friend who loves fashion. Besides. There’s Luka.” *cue flashbacks of Adrien watching Marinette and Luka on a date, with the absolute saddest music I have ever heard play in this show playing in the background while he reflects* Guys. This is how Adrien thinks. This is what Adrien thinks of relationships. He believes that you can only like one person at a time. He can’t like Marinette, he likes Ladybug. And Marinette can’t like him, she likes Luka. He DID figure it out. The only reason he dismissed it is because he doesn’t understand her feelings. He doesn’t understand that love isn’t clear-cut, finite, one-and-done. He knows for a fact that she went out with Luka once, so how could she like both of them? That’s not possible…is it?
And are you telling me that “It’s just a person that has similar writing, that’s all,” wasn’t spoken in the most melancholic, disappointed tone of voice that Adrien has ever used on anyone other than his father?
Adrien’s 14. Marinette is 14. They don’t understand life. They don’t understand how complex feelings and relationships are. They think you fall in love with your soulmate and it’s golden from there. They’re dumb kids, but they’re not stupid. Adrien did figure it out. But he can’t bring himself to believe it. He doesn’t understand. And be honest. Did you understand when you were 14?
A couple side notes about the episode that didn’t fit directly into my play-by-play.
That valentine thing went full-circle. Dark Cupid was the first episode with any real lovesquare plot-progression and here we have the exact same setup, but this time with internal monologuing. We start with Marinette reading Adrien’s letter and end with Adrien reading Marinette’s letter. Just like we did in Dark Cupid, but this time it’s in reflection. It’s a parallel. I’m not fabulous at analysis, but I do know this much. Parallels.
This was a Valentine’s Day episode in the same way that Chris Master was a Christmas episode. Themed but not centered. It was a nice change of pace if you ask me.
The end card is always kind of a mini-synopsis of the episode. In this one, we see Marinette, confident and proud of herself for accepting Adrien’s friendship, and Adrien, staring longingly at a valentine that he knows isn’t from Ladybug, wondering if it could possibly, possibly be from Marinette. Huh. That feels a little backwards, doesn’t it?
And I’m just still so stuck on how sad that music was with the Luka flashback. Like, that kinda hurt to listen to??? Wow Adrien.
Side note, I just…I can’t get over this. When you were a kid and you heard someone liked you (let alone was in love with you) did you believe it? I’m an adult and I wouldn’t believe it if someone told me they liked me. When you feel as unloved as Adrien does every single day, the idea of a good friend of yours being completely in love with you sounds almost…too good to be true, doesn’t it? Why should he think she likes him? Especially since he’s just drawing that conclusion on his own?
I personally would like to believe that the reason the rest of the episodes have been postponed is so that we can mull this over for a little while until the rest of them come out. Because from this point forward, there will be some changes. And speaking of which.
CHANGE. Can we all agree that that’s what this episode was about? Why would they place it on a timeline otherwise? Why would they explain to us what came before unless we’re supposed to know what comes after? IT’S THE CONTINUITY THAT WE’VE BEEN ASKING FOR. ACCEPT YOUR GIFTS.
This is the best continuity and information we’ve been given since episode one. And it’s set up in a way that my 6-year-old cousin could understand perfectly. It’s a show for everyone, guys. And this episode was the perfect example of it.
I personally think this is one of the best episodes thus far. In fact, if it weren’t for my Marichat-loving heart, it would be number one by a long-shot. Of COURSE they needed a recap episode. Because if they didn’t have one, do you know what we’d say? “Oh, but Thomas Astruc says there IS no continuity! Did he LIE???” Let the man win for once. We asked. It was delivered. This. Is. Continuity. This. Is. Character development. This. Is. Plot. This. Is. Miraculous.
Thank you for coming along on this journey with me.

As Parents Must
Summary: Tom and Sabine learn about the Lila situation and act as they must. Vague spoilers for S3E1 clip. EDIT: Now on AO3
It’s been several weeks and Marinette is still sitting in the back of the class. After that first day, it’s not that her classmates are being outright mean to her (other than typical Chloé behavior) but rather everyone is huddled around Lila all the time, leaving Marinette isolated and alone. It’s good in its own way. Marinette faithfully returns home alone to the bakery every lunch and gets more homework and designing done than she ever has before. Without distractions, other than the occasional late-night Akuma attack she’s getting more sleep than she has since becoming Ladybug. She’s even arriving on time to school, quietly slipping to her seat to get some sketching done before class starts.
Tom and Sabine have noticed the change. They’ve noticed her new lunchtime routine, initially thinking it was just their daughter caught up in a big school project or new design. But there’s no visitors to the bakery anymore, not even on the weekend, and Marinette’s phone rarely goes off with an incoming text or call. Marinette appears joyful to them, leaving each morning with a smile and a kiss. But there’s a new quietness to her. A seriousness now readily apparent that’s she’s too young to carry.
With gentle coaxing at yet another lunch home alone, they get the story. Their kind, giving daughter who, although not perfect, always went out of her way to help her friends, has been shunned by those friends. It takes everything in Sabine not to break down the school’s doors right then, how dare they hurt her daughter. It takes everything in Tom to not gather his precious girl in his arms and hold her tight, show her how cherished she is. But they sit still and hold their composure for Marinette’s sake, always leading by example.
“It’s really okay,” Marinette says, a tiny smile on her lips as she looks at her parents. “I know my value. If they can’t see that and want to hang out with Lila instead of me, then I guess they really weren’t my friends. Or at least not good ones.”
Sabine takes Tom’s hand, both looking on with pride at their daughter. They are struck by what she has just said.
Marinette leaves the room with a family hug, and once safely upstairs does Tom let a tear roll down his cheek, so incredibly in awe of her but so sad she has had to learn this lesson. Tom and Sabine share a look, no words needed. They have raised their daughter well, they will always show her unconditional love, and those children will regret that they ever treated Marinette this way.
One day the class decides to head to the Dupain-Cheng bakery for a big group lunch. Tom and Sabine were notorious for refusing any payment from the group of kids, no matter the amount they racked up in sweets. As usual, they don’t even notice that Marinette is not with them, not thinking twice about going to her parents’ business and getting free food without her.
They enter the bakery all smiles and laughter. Kim and Alix are making ridiculous bets about how much they can eat. Rose is pointing out to Juleka all the pretty designs on the cakes. Chloé is ordering Sabrina to pick out the best looking mille-feuille. Max and Nathaniel are weighing the pros and cons on sweet versus savory. Alya and Nino are at the front of the boisterous group, a large selection of treats already selected at the register.
“Hi Mrs. Cheng!” Alya greets with a carefree grin.
“Oh, hello Alya,” she says in her sweet, motherly voice. “Did you bring the entire class with you?”
“Almost! Adrien is at another photo shoot, and unfortunately Lila had lunch plans with the Dalai Lama. And Lila’s an expert on patisserie, did you know she learned from-“
“Oh, what a shame.” Sabine interrupts, fingers pressing at the buttons on the register with more force than necessary.
“It is!” “I wish she were here!” “-never gotten to try a macaron here” The class piped up from the back.
The register dings, interrupting the bemoaning of Lila’s absence.
“That will be €17.50,” Sabine reads the total with a perfect customer service smile.
Nino laughs, “Good one, Mrs. DC.”
“We know everything is free for Marinette’s friends.” Alya finishes, already reaching for her bag of goodies.
Sabine reaches out to hold the bag in place, smile not wavering one bit. “That’s right, Marinette’s friends are always welcome to anything here. So that will be €17.50.”
The entire bakery went silent.
Nino, dumbfounded, reaches for his wallet and pulls out several bills to hand over as Alya stands next to him frozen, the rest of the class standing behind them stunned.
As Sabine takes his money, Tom comes out from the back and places an arm around her. “Thank you for your business!” Tom says, gently squeezing Sabine’s shoulder as she hands Nino his change. “Alya, Nino, kids! It’s been a while. When was the last time any of you visited?”
“Uh…” Alya and Nino stammered. Despite Tom’s seemingly friendly smile, there’s a steely glint in his normally kind eyes.
“Alix, was it that time you tore your new shirt while skateboarding and Marinette sewed it up for you? Or Nathanael, when Marinette helped you find historical fashion references for your time-traveling comic book? Or maybe Max, was it that time you borrowed Marinette’s new controller when yours broke before the Mecha Strike contest?” Each of the classmates blushed and looked away as Tom and Sabine reminded them of all the small kindnesses Marinette had done for them, even after they had started ignoring her. They start to quietly back towards the door, hoping to escape without having to face any more hard truths.
“It’s so nice to know you haven’t forgotten about our little bakery,” Sabine calls to their retreating forms. “Please come back any time.” The entire class flinches, Alya most of all, and they all finally start to feel shame for how they’ve treated the one person who always lends a helping hand. They leave the bakery in near silence, the opposite of how they arrived.
As the door closes, Marinette comes bounding downstairs, book bag slung over her shoulder.
“Busy lunch rush? Any interesting customers today?” She asks, grabbing a croissant.
“Nothing we couldn’t handle, dear. And no one worth mentioning.” Sabine smiles, and Tom laughs in agreement.

*Not sure if this should be immediately after the QB Episodes but I put it there anyways. You can move it back if you’d like.
**{QB}Queen’s Battle and {DoH}Day of Heroes 2pt episodes.
This should help. I watched up to Captian Hardrock via this list and it all made SO MUCH MORE SENSE having Glaciator, Troublemaker and Frighteningale earlier in the season.
