mirae picks up her step to place her next to gyujeong when she sees him in the hallway of the broadcast station. quite contrary to her aversion to him in recent times, she’s decided to start construction on a bridge across troubled waters today. a birthday seems as good an excuse as any. if he brings up the family shit, she’ll still be more than happy blow it all up and not look back, but she can’t deny it’s become a bit tiring to force bile up her throat each time she sees him.

hwang mirae doesn’t forget the hatchets she’s forged, but she can bury the ones that have gone dull.

“a little birdy told me yesterday was someone’s birthday.”

the little birdy in question had been her phone calendar, filled to the brim with the birthdays of labelmates and important industry people.

“no present, sorry,” she presents her empty hands, palm-up and she looks over at him to make sure he can see her face isn’t mocking. “classic ‘what do you get for the man who has everything plus a current hit song and his own clothing line’ dilemma, but feel free to drop some hints and something might show up at your door still.”

“i’ve been told that from time to time,” she teases, grinning back at her friend. swallowing down a sigh, there’s a sense of relief and peace that wash over her just from the mere presence of her friend. she shouldn’t complain, life has been extremely kind to her lately, but there’s still that feeling of not being completely content that lingers. she busies herself by dipping a piece of fruit into the chocolate, twirling it around before bringing it up to her mouth. “really? am i crazy if i say i love the idea of being all over your explore page?” she jokes but it’s true, she’s a little self centered that way in wanting her friends to see her even through social media.

having her friends full attention now she slides the plate of fruit between the two, urging her to grab a piece as well. “mixed, definitely mixed. i’m supposed to feel good about it right? i do. kind of. i don’t know, i guess i didn’t expect for it to feel so,” she pauses trying to find the right word, “raw? i submitted some old pieces, tried writing some new. the new was cool, fun. i worked on choreography too, also fun. it’s just, the old shit i submitted brought up shit i thought i had buried but i guess i didn’t. i’m having a hard time trying to box it up again, kinda because the muse behind the work is popping up again too.”

she says it all in one breath, hurried as to not talk herself out of saying it. she reminds herself she’s talking to mirae, someone who has always shown her truest self and she knows to be honest. there’s never been games of charades between them, who they were is what they showed to each other and it’s why she’s always valued their sisterhood. “ugh,” she groans dramatically, “tell me you’re at least suffering a little too?”

“oh, not at all. most would love that idea,” mirae boasts with a tone of inflated self-confidence that shows itself most with friends and on variety shows. “but you’re the lucky one who gets to live the reality.” she tosses her hair over her shoulder, a dreamy sigh springing forth from her lips that lasts only a few seconds before it bursts into a wide grin. “who am i kidding? i love the eye candy.”

mirae takes a slice of fruit from the bowl and pops it into her mouth, bypassing the melted chocolate entirely only out of preoccupation with listening intently to what her friend has to say. spending all of her days on set with others who also spend all of their days on the same set means life becomes something of a blur of sameness. anything outside of the bubble becomes ten times more intriguing by default. “working on something so hard is going to bring up a lot of feelings, but ‘muse’, are we talking ex problems in the mix, too?”

honestly, mirae isn’t sure she has the most enlightening perspective to offer on what hayi’s describing. though she’s certainly connected to her music, she’s not the confessional singer-songwriter type. her experiences inform her performance, but her acting roles surface unintentional emotions in her far more frequently more than her songs do, and she doubts what hayi is describing is anything like the urge to reach out to her father more often that playing jiwoo had brought up in her the past few months.

she gives an apologetic half-smile that says not really. mirae’s life’s going pretty damn well, actually, but she won’t go any further than that and rub it in. still, she’s never been the type to fake anything for hayi’s sake. “i’m having sympathy pains for you if that counts.”

siren

siren is mirae’s second comeback as a solo artist, following her 2022 releases “bloom” and “gashina”. it leaves behind the connecting link of floral imagery from her previous two songs, but serves as a continuation of the emotional arc. siren is jointly inspired by the concepts of a warning siren and the mythological creature called a siren. another dance pop song, siren is retro-inspired in sound. lyrically, the song is a warning to an ex-lover.

a series of questions answered by selene’s mirae at the press showcase for her solo comeback with “siren”.

how would you describe this release?

“siren” is the next step in my journey as a soloist. there were people i showed this song too who said ‘of course, the song is just like mirae’ and there were others who were surprised. in that sense, i hope this release can be both surprising and well-fit. it shows another point of the story that unfolded in ‘bloom’ and ‘gashina’ while having a persona of its own.

what is your favorite part about this release?

“’siren’ is the release where i get to be the most bold yet. while ‘bloom’ had its own boldness and ‘gashina’ was confident, ‘siren’ is unapologetic and relatable to me.”

what were preparations for this release like?

“unlike ‘bloom’ and ‘gashina’ which were both picked out far in advance and as a pair, i chose ‘siren’ after i had finished promoting ‘gashina’. it was also written with me in mind by one of the producers who worked on ‘gashina’ after i had spoken about the feelings i wanted to express in my next song. in that way, ‘siren’ has a different fit from any song i released before, by myself or in selene, as it had been tailor-made for me from the very beginning.”

what do you hope to achieve through this release?

“i received so much love for my previous songs and selene as a whole always receives so much support from our fans that i wanted to repay them by giving them a song they can enjoy and sing along to.”

what is the most memorable lyric or moment from this single/album for you?

“the line ‘the beautiful me of your fantasies doesn’t exist’ resonated with me when i first heard it. no one is a perfect ideal. if you expect someone to be one, you’ll be rudely awakened by their blaring sides, like a warning siren.”

what inspired the concept of this comeback?

“when ‘siren’ was being prepared, we focused on the ideas of both mythological sirens and a siren, like a warning or alarm. the song and the concept have those dual meanings and i worked my hardest to express both well.”

your last single, “gashina”, became famous for its point choreography. does��“siren” have a catchy point choreography too?

“rather than hoping to have a viral killing point, i want to focus on preparing a performance that embodies the concept well and is eye-catching. the chorus choreography is fun to me, but for this song, i wanted to perform the choreography to feel siren-like more than anything.”

he’s quick to get the heavy bags off her hands, careful to not spill anything or shove it about. they are heavy, they don’t only look it, but he handles them with surprising ease as he moves to one of the few tables shoved in the corner of the room. “an army of two is better than an army of one.” jihoon says, placing the bags on the table.

“everyone was here, including a manager or two, but we were all getting tired so called it quits earlier.” he explains, peaking into a bag or two out of curiosity to see what mirae had got them. “i can always give them a ring, i’m sure they wouldn’t say not to a treat.” the younger suggests, gaze lifting up to look at the other. he says that, he isn’t sure if it would be the food and drinks or out of respect to their senior.

a small nod of his head is the initial answer to her question, that he didn’t want to leave. “i’ve not been spending a lot of time dancing, since the studio was booked for a little longer, i thought i would use it to my advantage.” half lie, half truth. jihoon had really blurred the lines between being honest and just not speaking.

a smile appears on her lips once again at words, and perhaps it’s her automatic fondness for her label juniors that brings it out of her, but it’s present nonetheless. “an army of two.” she nods decisively. “i like the sound of that, so don’t worry about calling anyone back who’s already gone home to relax. if we have food left over, we can share with anyone else who’s still around this time of night.” rookie days of mandated late night practices are over for mirae, but the sympathy still holds recent in times when schedules leave no other chance to rehearse.

it hadn’t gone unnoticed jace hadn’t been dancing when mirae walked in, but that’s the kind of thing that is really only grating to bring up unprompted. jace was allowed a break in what was no doubt, she’d heard, a jampacked schedule. instead, she says, “you must not be getting a lot of sleep these days. catalyst always seems to be so busy.”

she unwinds the handles of one of the bags jace had carried to peak into it as well, and she cradles a bowl of soup as she lifts it out of the bag and onto the table. “are you already preparing for another comeback or are you getting ready to tour?”

she mulls in the conversation, a new light shed. she wonders if mirae’s always been a sort of saint in the industry — one who drinks into the rose-tinted sheen of the lights, letting the clamor of public praise become the soundtrack to each step.

but seo minjung knows her limitations to curiosities, and the extension into seniors like strangers tend to nothing more than the polite arch of her mouth, and a nod that dips. “all the wise insight, and you’re nothing more than living proof that wisdom comes with age, ghandi. i’m curious to see how much wisdom stems with each tick on the clock.” in hindsight, she learns nothing about wisdom — only that time heals all, except when the shallow knock to her stomach feels like it presses pause on all floors.

after all, it’s the pause that leaves her in this predicament, smack-dab in a studio via a wandering daze.

cheap talk does wonders, and she finds her eyes perking wider, her smile stretching higher. “i always knew that fish tasted off.” voice sarcastic, but there’s nothing more than a harmless jab into a fishbowl world. “as much as you can mimic exterior shapes, you can’t copy what on the inside.”

back to career, and she shies away the sentiment with one jut of her chin. “no, i don’t think so — i don’t like acting. i don’t like taking money pretending to be someone else when i already do that as my main source of income.” one more polite hint of her smile, and now it’s digging a bit to personal. “call our beloved summer a one off, i don’t think i’ll act like that ever again.”

“hey, don’t make me sound so old,” mirae admonishes in a tone that says it isn’t meant to be taken so seriously. being a woman in her thirties in the idol industry can make people look at her as a dinosaur at times, but she sees that more as a failing of the industry than anything that speaks to her own value. plenty have not-so-subtly suggested it might be time to wean off the selene comebacks and settle down, either as an actress or a wife depending on just how far they’re willing to go in the face of someone so notoriously ambitious. but minjung doesn’t likely mean anything serious by it, she knows.

“wisdom doesn’t automatically come with age. it’s more important how well you know to learn from your mistakes.” there are too many people who never seem to grow and only repeat the same mistakes over and over. there’s no wisdom in that.

“and you have plenty of wisdom of your own, i’m sure. successful lyricists must, no?” minjung would know more than mirae about that particular facet of life, even if mirae is trying her best to play catch-up in skill with those ahead of her. games of catch-up are only fun for as long as the competitor seems within reach.

“what’s the difference if it’s already your nine-to-five?” mirae doesn’t agree with minjung’s cynical rhetoric; acting in a film or drama is as different from the parameters that come with being an idol as it as from living everyday life. there are norms to be adhered to, rules to follow, impressions to make, but acting is stepping into shoes and making them your own, not shining the ones you were born in until they sparkled the brightest they could. “did playing kook yeonseo bore you more quickly than playing minjung does?”

27 APRIL — Selene member Mirae has been announced as a model for Louis Vuitton’s Pre-Fall 2023 show.

Louis Vuitton’s Pre-Fall 2023 runway show will take place on the Jamsugyo Bridge at the Hangang River in Seoul on April 29. The brand has previously revealed through the press that the director of Squid Game, which Mirae appeared in as Kang Saebyeok last fall, would be participating as a creative advisor for the show’s scenography.

Mirae has previously walked the runway for Tokyo Girls Collection, Doii, and Dolce & Gabbana. She is currently promoting her solo single “Siren”.
