I'm such a big believer that for all the hard times Tess and Joel had in canon, they had so many good days, too. And this just encapsulates that quiet, unspoken love they shared so perfectly. They really were one another's port in the storm for years upon years.

Thank you both so much. This brightened what has been a very uneasy week for me. I am in awe of both of you. <3

The lovely @bumblepony gifted me this perfect piece of art - by the super fucking talented @miranhas-art nonetheless 😭😭😭. Inspired by the below scene from my fic, revery alone will do; I’m not embarrassed to say that I CRIED when I saw this today 😭. This fic is so precious to me and @miranhas-art is an artist I just can’t get enough of. I love it so so much! Thank you, both of you ❤️❤️

She wakes up sometime in the night. Joel’s sitting next to her, his back against the wall of the bus stop. He’s unzipped his sleeping bag and draped it over them both. The moonlight coming in the window and doorway is bright white, casting everything in sharp relief. The pistol sitting in Joel’s lap glints. He’s got one hand wrapped around it and the other resting gently on the back of her head.

“Shhh,” he murmurs when she stirs, and from a distance, a long, throaty howl splits the silence of the night. Ellie feels a chill shiver down her spine.

“Wolves?” She whispers, her heart picking up speed in her chest, but before Joel can answer, the howl is joined by another, then another, and soon the night is filled with a cacophony of high shrieks and frantic barks. Ellie’s breath comes faster; she grips the edge of her sleeping bag in her hand, rolls until her face is buried against Joel’s side. His hand moves from her head to her back. He begins to rub his palm up and down the line of her spine.

“Shhh,” he says again. “We’re okay. They ain’t close.”

“How can you tell?”

She’s so ashamed of the way her voice trembles, breaks. If Joel notices, he doesn’t bring attention to it. “Trust me,” he says. The howls take on a different edge: crazed and short, thirsty. Ellie jams her eyes closed. “They’re huntin’,” Joel says, and Ellie croaks out:

“Us?”

Joel, the asshole that he is, laughs a little at that. “Nah,” he says. “Somethin’ else. We’re safe here. They don’t want nothing to do with us.” He squeezes her shoulder. “You’re alright. Go back to sleep, kiddo.”

I had to get back to Driftersverse ... so here's a new one. Tess & Joel & Tommy on the road in 2006. Everything wants to kill them. The brothers want to kill each other.

BUT FUCK THAT. Because look at this gorgeous work @bumblepony commissioned by the ever-talented @miranhas-art which goes so beautifully with this story?! It's like a fricken movie poster. Thank you both so much. I am still grinning like an idiot, it just NAILS the vibe. And look at them - they are just babies in the outbreak and they will kill you (Tommy might feel bad) but look at his belt buckle and Joel's attitude and Tess's lil pew-pew.
