Dean sucks SO MUCH. He comes home after ~cheating on his wife with his ex-girlfriend~ & then yells at Lindsay for answering his phone (?). Lindsay … the person he marries even though he knows he’s in love with someone else… He even says that *she* doesn’t respect him?! When he hasn’t even showered after sex with Rory yet!

As a side note, I hate Rory’s polo shirt & mini bag combo in this episode (S5, E1).

I always interpreted the, “no I didn’t but thanks though” line as Taylor not being interested in what the person is trying to tell her. She doesn’t care because she’s mentally somewhere else, away from all the gossip / drama. Not like, “ooh, thanks for showing me this!”

The giant portrait of Richard in A Year in the Life is such a beautiful metaphor for grief & the place loved ones hold in our lives even after they’re gone. The way the painting sits in Emily’s house and takes up all the space / air in the room at first. Richard’s absence, like the presence of the painting, cannot be missed. It’s also in the background of some of the shots between Lorelai and Emily reminding us that Richard remains an important part of the family & his legacy looms large- even if he isn’t still physically there. Ultimately, Emily replaces the giant portrait with a more appropriately sized one- his memory is still there, but she’s increased the size of her life around it. It strikes me every time I watch.

Here’s the thing, Mitchum might not have been right to judge Rory on their limited interaction & the power dynamic was way off. But she did kind of TEMPORARILY prove him right by immediately dissolving into a puddle, stealing a yacht, quitting school, & moving into her grandparents house.

I’m not saying I would have necessarily done better at 20/21- but it doesn’t feel like a proportionate reaction to receiving a bad performance review. Plus, you just know Paris would have told Mitchum to shove it.

You’re On Your Own Kid has grown up Long Live energy. It’s looking back at those moments that felt flawless and shiny and impenetrable and realizing that nothing’s permanent & everything changes.
