Phantom Bodies - Neutral Setting Documentation + Reflection
@professormelina
With a collection of objects from my boyfriends belongings, I wanted to encapsulate a difficult time throughout his teenage life. Facing near homelessness, he held on to objects of his childhood as a coping mechanism, which carried on into his adult life. By encasing a body like structure of himself with plaster and personalizing it with his tattoos, the installation is meant to showcase the fragility of childhood memories and how they can affect adult life emotional developments. Now as an adult, we both live together and share a personal space, learning how to help each other with trauma, learning how to be an adult, and growing together.

Welding/ Fabric Project
For this project, we implemented the rigidity of the rebar to create a foundation for the fabric. My structure started and 4 rebar lines cut and sized to the silhouette of my body. I bent the rebar to take shape, and welded each piece together, highly inspired from Ana Mendieta’s silhouette series. The fabric was a combination of an old sweater my great-grandmother gifted me for Christmas, and some curtains she left behind after her death.
The empty shell serves as representation of the Taino belief of the “Hupias” or souls that move through the living and dead realms. After my grandmother death, her presence stayed with me, which is why I wanted to incorporate her fabrics and essence into the piece. The piece was then hung from the ceiling to enhance the eerie feeling of the ghostly figure, and its aura within the room.

De-TABLE-tization Neutral Setting Documentation + Reflection
A guitar for me symbolizes a connection to my Dominican roots. Playing guitar has been a hobby that has grown with me since I first learned it when I was 7 years old, and it has continued in my adult years. Even after the significant cultural change when moving to the U.S.A., the traditional music from the Dominican Republic was a factor that never changed from my identity. I hoped that by creating a guitar, I could show homage to the music that kept me happy throughout my childhood, and shaped me as a person. Bachata and Merengue are Dominican traditional music, with complex guitar solos and rustic yet colorful feel. This project is meant to personify the passion I have for my native country and my heritage.
The process of the guitar creation is also a representation of my commitment to the preservation of my culture. At first, I created a common table out of the wood, using plywood, 2x4's and 2x2's. I then destroyed the table to be left with a puzzle of wood pieces and created something from nothing. From these pieces of wood, the idea of a guitar came to mind due to its connection to wood and its making process. I cut the plywood for the back and front body of the guitar, the 2x4s for the neck, and the curvature sides of the guitar. Everything was assembled with nails and wood glue to reinforce the guitar, and give it a clean look in comparison to screws. Everything was smoothed out with the handheld sander, making the experience very hands-on and meticulous. Lastly, the guitar took shape, and is a bare representation of the labor and hard work that's the building process, which I'm willing to make for heritage preservation.
