FINAL MODEL OUTCOME
In today’s lesson i have finally finished my model by adding fake grass and rocks from a model making set. i did this to bring a bit of shape to the base as the model is very dark, a good way to have avoided this would have been to added a layer of super sculpy on the base to make it look like the model is in its habitat instead o a blog, a good example of this could be the Ace Of Clay model as well as a Model made by a fellow student Caitlin who made a base for her wolf model.
Furthermore, i also further developed the purple shine on the model, as the creature is dead i wanted it to look like it was faintly glowing purple like the flower. Within the model, i wanted to develop it to make it fantasy however also keep a fair amount of realism, i did this by keeping the skeleton of the creature similar to one of a human, they are human souls after all.
My favourite part of the model has to be the creature it’s self, this could have been because it is the only thing i fully designed before making it. The tree and flower were added on as accessories and structural support. Unfortunately the tree is very under-scaled, the trees in my forest are meant to be huge and tower over everything, which meant i couldn’t create this using sculpy as it would look odd and wouldn’t it in the oven. To fix this i did create a drawing or my portfolio of the creature in the forest to show the landscape more.

STORYBOARD AND FILM COMPARE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The main part of the sequence starts with the lighter scene. in the final product i extended this scene slightly. one of the things i didn’t do while filming the footage, the face wasn’t included as the actor, Ashley, couldn’t use the lighter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
at this point of the story, i forgot to include the different camera angels. this means the film looks a little flat, if i could go back i would organise mysel more and get in those extra angels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this point was in my storyboard however i forgot to frgot to do the close up of the masked figure, however i did include the view of the hands creeping around the tree which gives a more creepy effect.

Here is a section of my video which consists of a shot sequence of a lighter flickering. As the sound in the soundtrack is quiet, i could take the sound from those shots and scatter them around the sequence to make the illusion someone is struggling with the lighter.

For my film i structured the film into two parts. the first part is a sequence of clips from random scenery during the day where as the second part is where my the sequence for storyboard begins.

Colour Grading
http://slides.com/oliviareilly/colour-in-horror-films/embed#/
For my colour grading i chose to go with a cold blue colour. “A common cast that is used in horror films is blue, which is used to create a 'chilling' effect. To create an effective blue cast the whites tones are usually balanced to cold blues or a blue mixed with purple tones. Depending on what blue is used the skin is also affected. In the Gif from 'The Ring (2002)' the blue cast makes the white tones of the villain look eerie, which causes the villain to look quite ghostly and dead”
Tumblr media
Other colour grades i looked out was red and green.
To change the grading of my film, i went into Lumetri Colour, selected the colour wheel & match then edited the midtowns, shadows and highlights.

BOARDGAME SQUARE
This is the square I made for the overall class board game. My square features the iconic purple palette I use in the majority of my mysterious island work, aswell as the flowers which I use as a statement for the island as they grow there. I decided to use the flowers because I feel as if I have used many aspects of my island throughout my work and I wanted to do something different.
Overall, I do not like my card. The design it’s self isn’t bad, however after looking at some of my classmates work, I reaslised it was a little complicated and there was no need for the islands name on the tile. If I was to redo this square, I would scrap the name and perhaps only paint one or two bigger flowers.
BOARDGAME CARD
This is the card I have made which u would pick up (when on my square) and it would tell u the effect it would have on your piece in the game. For my square, the effect is that “you gain crippling depression” “move back to the beginning”. It was planned to be placed at the end of the bored game just before the finish, however I had no control over this so it was placed somewhere in the middle.
For the card it’s self I created a template from other classmates aswell as taking insperation from card games such as Pokemon, Yugioh and Top Trumps. For the picture on my card, I drew a silhouette a spirit in the forest. I like the effect this has however as it was drawn in pencil, it looks a bit out of place compared to the rest of the card which was done in ink. For the writing, I used a type writer, this added a little more interest to design and always avoided risking it with my untrustworthy handwriting.

COMPANY LOGO
I took the main design from the mask i made, however changed the colour tho suit my more purple pallet found through out my work. I designed the logo to wink while being played in my film to give a range of movement.
COMPARED TO OTHER LOGOS-
THE SECOND GIF- This is the second GIF i have made. Animation is a topic i wanted to explore further both as a hobby and career, so learning to make these GIFs are fun. The making of this GIF was a lot easier, i found it to be a sought of instinct in the process.

Box Trolls (2014)
Tumblr media
The Boxtrolls is a great example of an amazing stop-motion film. Directed by Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi and produced by Laika, the movie tells a simple yet adorable and entertaining story of friendship, values and the duality of good and evil. The Boxtrolls quickly immerses you into the atmosphere of the film and the city of Cheesebridge with amazing animation, artstyle and overall attention to detail over the film. The movie’s soundtrack fits the theme and perfectly highlights the scenes in the movie, setting the right tone.
SYNOPSIS
In the underground of a fictional town called Cheesebridge, live creatures called the Boxtrolls. As the pest exterminators roam the streets of the town, the Boxtrolls are quickly getting taken away by the so called ‘Red Hats’. When a boxtroll named Fish and countless others get kidnapped by the exterminators, Eggs, a boy living with the trolls, ventures out to find his lost friends. Along the way he befriends Winnie, the daughter of the mayor. Together, they devise a plan to save the Boxtrolls from the exterminator.
MODELS
The character models in the film are amazing. They are very detailed and truly come to life. And with that, the model design and fabrication was just as difficult as any part of the film’s production. There were 28 Eggs puppets, and about 15-20 for each individual of the main Boxtrolls. Overall, there were about 190 puppets - at the time a record for a Laika film. Concept art and sketches was created by Mike Smith.
The puppets had feature facial animation (they have thousands of printed out faces to achieve the best emotion) through both mechanical and replacement methods.

Flower References
On my island, there is a species of purple flower which is designed to be one of the only living plants on the island. These flowers come in various different sizes but have reoccurring aspects like 5 long petals that glow purple. Native to Karx, these flowers also populate the overworld but are usually only seen by those suffering with crippling loneliness; there are exceptions.
knowing this, as well as my main colour palette or this whole project being purple, i decided to do some research on some well known poisonous flowerers that happen to be purple.

DEADLY NIGHTSHADE
Deadly nightshade is a perennial plant with long, thin branches.
It was believed to be the property of the Devil, meaning that anyone who eats the berries is punished for eating his fruit. In art and poetry, it represents danger and betrayal.
Tumblr media
Wolfsbane, also known as woman’s bane or devils helmet, belongs to the buttercup family. It’s a perennial plant and is native to mountainous regions in the northern hemisphere. When ingested, an intense burning feeling in the limbs and abdomen is immediately felt. In large doses, death can occur in as little as 2-6 hours. Its name comes the mythology that it was thought to keep away werewolves, hence ‘wolfsbane’. http://hiddenunseen.blogspot.com/2011/10/top-10-deadliest-plants.html#ixzz67iX3lGy2

Tim Burton and Nick Park
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tim Burton and Nick Park are both well known directors who both have popular and iconic model designs.
Tim Burtons models are usually dark and twisted. His most well known models can be seen in Nightmare Before Christmas, Corps Bride and Frankenweenie. Common features in his style include long slim arms and legs, as well as the extreme opposite with very bloated and grotesque figures.
Nick Parks models seem a lot more clay like in their appearance. Common shows include Wallace And Gummet and Shaun The Sheep. Parks’s style is very notable in young children shows, this suggests his shows are more friendly for younger minds. Tim Burtons models are a lot darker and twisted, however I admire how he still keeps the models child friendly.

Other Students Work
Tumblr media
ASHLEY
- Ashley also created a tree in her model. Unlike mine, she has mode created her tree having a fantasy element to it. The tree is long and twisty unlike mine which is tall. Ashley also used a lot more colour in hers, such as green to give the apperance of moss. I like Ashley’s tree and how she conveyed the task differently to show the emotion of her model.
Tumblr media
HEIDI
As well as my own, Heidi also created a creepy character for her model. I love Heidis model as it is so unique and interesting. I am unsure on what exactly the creature is but I love the technology and natural themes to it.
Tumblr media
OTHERS
Here is a piece of work for work from a student last year, the main thing i want to take this is it is to heavily inspired on Tim Burton and lacks individuality of its own. However the model its self is well done, the face pops out in a creepy way with the bulging wide eyes.
