I don't know what paddington is doing on that list, but it made me think of the time someone drew a picture of the queen with paddington after she died, and we had scores of people losing their minds at the idea that paddington bear wasn't the same kind of communist as them

Scientists at UC Riverside have demonstrated a new, RNA-based vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus and can be used safely even by babies or the immunocompromised.Â
Every year, researchers try to predict the four influenza strains that are most likely to be prevalent during the upcoming flu season. And every year, people line up to get their updated vaccine, hoping the researchers formulated the shot correctly.
The same is true of COVID vaccines, which have been reformulated to target sub-variants of the most prevalent strains circulating in the U.S.
This new strategy would eliminate the need to create all these different shots, because it targets a part of the viral genome that is common to all strains of a virus. The vaccine, how it works, and a demonstration of its efficacy in mice is described in a paper published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Â
âWhat I want to emphasize about this vaccine strategy is that it is broad,â said UCR virologist and paper author Rong Hai. âIt is broadly applicable to any number of viruses, broadly effective against any variant of a virus, and safe for a broad spectrum of people. This could be the universal vaccine that we have been looking for.â

"It hurt to lose to Ronald Reagan. But after the election, I tried to make the transition as smooth as possible. Later, from my experience in trying to brief him on matters of supreme importance, I was very disturbed at his lack of interest. The issues were the 15 or 20 most important subjects that I as President could possibly pass on to him. His only reaction of substance was to express admiration for the political circumstances in South Korea that let President Park close all the colleges and draft all the demonstrators. That was the only issue on which he came alive."
-- Former President Jimmy Carter, on losing the 1980 election and the transition leading to the inauguration of Ronald Reagan, interview with TIME Magazine, October 11, 1982.

At some point, I must hoist myself upright and eat something, but on day four of sprained lower back-ness, the spirit is very much not willing.

Apropos of today's episode of Behind the Bastards in particular, I would very much like to spend an afternoon just talking about growing up in Texas with Robert Evans.

Fruit will last 3 weeks longerâŚ.
Why You Should Keep Fruit In Mason Jars Instead Of The Containers They Come InâŚâŚ.
When you get your fruit home from the grocery store, the first thing you should do is remove it from the plastic containers theyâve come in and recycle them. Next, clean out your sink and fill it with water (you could also use a large bowl). Then, toss in a few tablespoons of distilled vinegar. Youâll then want to submerge your fruit in the water and let it soak for about 10 to 15 minutes. The purpose of this is to get rid of any mold or bacteria on the fruit which is what causes them to go rotten more quickly.
Once the fruit has had a nice soak, remove it from the vinegar water, transfer to a strainer, and rinse with cool water. Leave the fruit out to dry on a tea towel or paper towel. Once dry, transfer the fruit to mason jars and seal up those lids. This is the best way to make your fruit last, particularly berries, which tend to be very prone to mold and bacteria buildup.
And thatâs it! Incorporating these few extra steps into preparing and storing fruit can help you eliminate food waste, save money, and keep your fridge stocked with fresh produce for much longer.

Gentle reminder: âbear witnessâ means âlearn about whatâs happening, so you can talk about it, agitate for change, and help where you canâ

I honestly cannot believe how far T(W)ERF rhetoric has spread on this site. They used to be the ONLY ones I saw openly mocking the concept of identifying as queer, the ONLY ones I saw referring to people as âkweerâ in a mocking way.

Every person [surveyed] said they worry about losing access to films â a not irrational fear. Cillian Murphy just won the Oscar for best actor for Oppenheimer, but the movie that made him a star, 2002âs critically lauded and commercially successful 28 Days Later, is virtually impossible to stream. Itâs also out of print on disc, with used copies fetching $60 or $70 on eBay.
Itâs partly for this reason that the actor Timothy Simons, best known as Jonah on Veep, prefers physical films. Thereâs a notion that, âyou know, âEverythingâs available on streaming,ââ he told me. âWell, it kind of isnât. And the thing that is available on streaming could just not be tomorrow, if two companies you donât care about get in a fight about licensing.â
