Incantation (Spoilers Present)
Title: Incantation
Language: Cantonese
Run time: 1 hour and 51 minutes
Summary of the movie: Ruo-nan accidentally broke religious taboo 6 years ago, which caused the deaths of her boyfriend and family. Since then, she fell into a dark period of superstition; she hid her secrets and pains from other people, and even gave away her newborn baby to another family. After a few years, having went to therapy and mostly settled back into normal life, Ruo-nan decides she wants her child back. However, signs of the curse from 6 years ago start to appear around her daughter and Ruo-nan realizes she needs to confront her biggest fears, her deepest horrors, for the sake of her child. She starts to record everything about the curse in hopes of finding a way to save her daughter.
Would I watch this again?: Probably not for the simple fact that knowing the twist of it all ruins its re-watchability, and the whole point of the movie is the twist ending with her daughter and the curse
Characters: The movie itself mainly revolves around the mother Rou-nan, and I felt her actress (Hsuan-yen Tsai), did a very good job of having this almost sense of helplessness to her, and that she wants to protect her daughter but it being tormented by the Mother Buddha over and over and over with no way to escape, finally turning to the incantation that she gets the viewers to chant through out the movie. I feel also that her daughter, just referred too as Dodo in the movie was truly a terrified child who was being torment by something that was put into effect before she was even properly born. The moment when she is sick in the hospital and says the three things she loves the most was truly heartbreaking, and seeing this poor child sick and scared that she was dying is more heart wrenching than if it was used during a scare scene.
Favorite Shot: The shot that stick out in my head is the final shot when Ruo Nan reveals the face of Mother Buddha
Favorite Scene: The staple scene in my head for this movie is when Dodo is in the hospital scared repeating the three things she likes over and over because she's scared
Favorite Character: I feel its basic but I liked Rou-nan the most, as we watched her suffer through not only a horrific curse but the pressure of being a single mother and the torment and tole that can take on a person, especially because her boyfriend, and the father of Dodo, died in such an unnatural cause.
Least Favorite Character: I mean I feel that is obvious to say the Mother Buddha as she is the main "evil" if you will. But the more I think about it the more that I dislike the social worker Chi-Ming, a lot of what he does is driven from his selfishness to want to be a father and ripping Dodo away from her mother
Favorite Actor/Actress: Sin-Ting Huang, or Dodo's actress, for being how young she is, she did a phenomenal job of portraying a cursed and terrified child.
