The Library, Cragside.

This is probably one of my most favourite interior rooms to photograph. The balance of highlights and shadows are on full display here whilst you are also reminded that the lights in this room were amongst the first lights the world had ever seen.

Nowadays, you flick a light on and think nothing of it, but the Library houses four of the inventor Joseph Swan’s original incandescent lamps. Originally the vases stood in a bowl of mercury. Servants would wear gloves to avoid electrocution while placing the bowls in mercury to complete the circuit.

The house shone with electric light, which was powered by Armstrong’s expertly integrated hydroelectricity system. This system harnessed the power from man-made lakes across the Cragside estate.

This was known as the magician's palace, and it's still special.
