Armbands in Korean funerals (feat. my favorite K-Dramas).

Recently, I have seen several funeral scenes watching K-Dramas, which made me want to post about the armbands.

First of all, the basic rules are:

1) You wear an armband on your left arm when the deceased is male, and on your right arm when the deceased is female.

2) There are armbands with two lines, one and none; more lines means a closer relationship to the deceased. (The person with the most lines is the chief mourner.) In many cases, two lines is for your parent's funeral. However, some wear an armband with three lines in rare occasions.

Now, when you are the (male) protagonist of a K-Drama, it would most likely be your father who dies. I have seen so many!

Of course, it could be your mother.

Or both.

(Wearing an armband the same way as when it is your father's funeral.)

And other family members.

(Uncle | friend)

(Wife, and a young son)

(Wife - an armband with three lines for the husband, as his sons are wearing the one with two for their deceased mother. Why on his left arm, though? I guess it was merely a mistake.)

When the deceased is not your family, I think the number of lines is really up to you and how you feel about that person. Were you two close? Did you care for them? Respect them? Have two lines.

(I am still thinking about why he chose the armband with no lines for both of the funerals. Because technically he and the deceased were not related by blood? Because he thought he did not deserve any lines, as he felt guilty about their deaths? Who knows.)
