How Did I Never Notice You Before? - Xiao Birthday Fic

Aether ran down the hallway, bookbag swinging from his shoulder and nearly throwing off his momentum. He couldn’t believe he missed his alarm! And Lumine hadn’t bothered to wake him either!

“Sorry, sorry! ‘Scuse me!” he shouted, squeezing past a group of students on their way to the library. Aether pulled the door open to his class and froze when all eyes turned to him. A blush darkened his cheeks at the unwanted attention.

His professor continued on with the lecture and Aether chose to just grab one of the open seats at the back of the room. Normally, he’d sit somewhere up front, but today was already a nightmare. He didn’t need more unwanted attention.

There was only one other person seated back here - a young man with back and teal hair wearing a white hoodie. His golden eyes shifted to Aether in curiosity when the blonde sat down beside him.

“Hey, what did I miss?”

The other man stiffened as if surprised he was being addressed. “Quiz on Thursday covering the recent unit. He’s just going over procedurals now.”

“Awesome, you’re a lifesaver.”

The dark-haired man sniffed and went back to his notes. After ten minutes, the lecture turned into an in-class assignment where students were forced to pair up.

“Want to be my buddy?” Aether asked.

Again, the other man seemed to be surprised but nodded all the same. They started the worksheet, with Aether doing most of the talking. Every so often the other boy chimed in with a correction or anecdote. By the end of the lecture, Aether had learned nothing about his classmate. Before he could rush out the door, the blonde chased after him and fell into step.

“Hey, what’s your name?”

“Xiao.”

“Do you always sit in the back?”

“Yes.” Those golden eyes twitched in annoyance.

“Maybe…I could sit with you again sometime?”

Xiao’s shoulders relaxed. “Sure.”

The blonde offered him a bright smile and adjusted his bag. “I’m Aether by the way.”

“Pleasure to make your acquaintance.” Xiao nodded, slowing as they reached a junction in the hallway. “I’m going this way,” he pointed toward the opposite direction Aether had to go.

“See you Thursday, then!” Aether waved and hurried to his next class.
