You chat a lot about how dragon is as a dad to plover but how is croc as plovers dad? Like he as a person seems to have less paternal instincts though no doubt cares so how does that reflect in their dynamic

Crocodile is not, and likely never will be a man to settle down. It’s just not in his nature, and his time in Level Six had done nothing but give him a new zest for life. He’ll never change his ways, and Dragon will never ask him to.

Be that as it may, he is not an absent father. He’s never straying far from New Ohara. A day’s sailing at farthest. He takes his duties very seriously, and you can bet that little girl is at the top of his list of priorities, right next to her happily retired father. He sticks around half the week and goes to sea for the rest of it, of course accounting for birthdays, holidays, emergencies, and other special occasions. He’s making sure Dragon gets time to relax when he’s around, too.

She’s a clever thing, and always one for pushing boundaries. A little bit of rebellion is a healthy thing to have, so of course Crocodile is going to foster that in her (within reason). He’s also teaching her to pick her “fights”. He’s teaching her soft limits and hard limits. He’s teaching her that some trouble is more than it’s worth.

And there are worries.

She can get… angry if things frustrate her enough. And no, not if she doesn’t get her way with things, she handles that as well as your typical toddler can. It only happens when she’s frustrated. Truly frustrated. Like pressure building in a sealed container, ready to explode if it gets to be too much.

Crocodile knows she gets it from him. Crocodile knew he got it from Xebec. Hell itself probably knew where Xebec got it from.

When he sees that anger start to build, he’s diverting her from its cause. Right now, she’s too young to get the whole “how about we set this down for a little bit” talk, but that’s definitely a life skill that’s going to have to be learned.

Crocodile doesn’t want her to experience anything like the falling out between him, Marco, and Pops…

Dragon went from having no babies to having one baby that he can't be around even though he wants it more than anything in the world short of a free world and now he has soooo many babies.

Something something Father's Day

He’d always wanted a family of his own. He’d looked at his mother and his father, how they loved each other so much, how they worked together even when apart, how they raised him, Dadan, and Kuzan with so much love… He’d known he wanted to have a life like that.

But he couldn’t have one. Not after he’d seen how deep the corruption went into the roots of the Navy. Not after he’d seen the monsters perched high up in the tree they nourished…

But he became a father despite it all. He did his best not to, mind, but… hot-blooded youth with one, faulty contraceptives with another, and his bleeding heart with the rest made short work of that. Plover was the only exception.

He hadn’t known Robin was his daughter until that first summer she spent on Baltigo, and he still struggles with this new guilt those absent years have hollowed out of his heart. Their relationship is… awkward. Like they’re still finding the frayed ends of all the would have’s, could have’s, and should have’s and are trying to figure out where they’re supposed to fit. She is so much like her mother, but she has his sense of humor. She guarded herself with it for years, and he at least can sleep a little easier knowing he had been able to protect her somehow.

Luffy… oh Luffy… he only thought he’d known heartbreak until he first held Luffy. He’d been such a tiny thing, and he hadn’t cried at all when he was born. He’d been his everything. He’d be his undoing if he let him. Closing his heart to him had been the hardest thing he’d ever had to do. He still hated himself for it. He doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to forgive himself.

Koala is… not exactly his. First and foremost, she is Fisher Tiger’s daughter. Then she is Hack’s kin. Then she’s Sabo’s… something, that is as of yet unclear. Then she’s Dragon’s kid. No sooner, no later. He is at peace with this, and has always been at peace with this.

Sabo was too much like himself to pass on to another family. Too much like himself to not feel kinship. Too willful, too angry, too empathetic, even without a memory to his name… if he hadn’t have taken that boy in, he knew he would have been going against the status quo on his own. He’d been in need of a family, and Dragon had been dying a slow death for the same reason. They had found each other just in time.

Gabe and Ryu were both the wild cards. Biomechanical superweapons with far too familiar faces. One was to be the loyal dog his husband refused to be. The other was to be the antithesis to all that he and the revolution was. Petty cruelty for its own sake. Now he teaches them how to tend to their feathers, tells them stories, indulges in their games.

And Plover.

Plover. His little rough and tumble girl with her father’s sharp teeth and violet eyes, and his wings.

She’s the first of his kids that he’s been able to raise from birth. You would all these years would make it hard for a baby to pull a fast one on him, but she’s been doing that since day one. And she’s being that in a world that’s finally, finally at peace.
