i love the implication behind the blair witch project (1999) that someone found the filmstock that was the last earthly remnants of three college film students and thought you know what would really honor these people? if we edited this record of their madness and gruesome demise up real nice and sent it to film festivals

TOURNAMENT PINS ARE HERE!

As of now, there are only 50 of each!
Of course, there are still plenty of blind bags left in stock:

love the library. there's no risk. you can take out a book and go "wow this sucks" and just give it back. and when you do that you're still making the library's Number Go Up so you'll be able to roll the dice on even more books. all for the low low price of free/you already paid for it with your tax money so you might as well use it

you know, i was going to say that not everyone wants to read fanfiction (or even knows about it) and those people still deserve fanfic-esque "cozy" stories if that's what they want (even tho some of them could stand to be written better). but then i saw your tags about the book drama and was like. well. i dont have any kind of response for that! except yikes
I absolutely agree with your first point regardless. I do not have any problem with the people who read or write cosy fiction or those who convert fanfic into a different published work. Neither are new (cosy mysteries have been a staple genre for decades), and there is an established 'right' way to rework a fanfic for publishing.
(Which is, by popular opinion, filing off the serial numbers, aka changing all identifiable IP content, reworking the story toward your original concepts, and removing all trace of the original fanfiction from the internet. This is difficult but not impossible to do the more removed the AU is from the original source. You can read 50 Shades of Grey, for example, and have no idea it was originally Twilight fanfiction, because it bears no resemblance to Twilight whatsoever.)
My problem is directly selling thinly veiled fanfiction while marketing it as fanfiction in a way that will absolutely get someone sued in the future if it does not happen with these particular books. Anne Rice will spontaneously reincarnate into a litigous IP-owner eventually, and the poor author misled into taking this approach will be thrown to the wolves over it. It's an incredibly bad idea all around.
[Short summary for those out of the loop - three previously-fanfiction books have been released recently that are explicitly being marketed as converted fanfic. As far as I know, at least some or all of the authors were unaware of this strategy until it was too late to protest it. All of these books, therefore, are being marketed as Draco/Hermione published fiction.]

I do actually care marginally about the guy in that reddit screenshot who voted for Trump and is now worried that he might lose his medicaid funding because I did not fucking stutter when I said healthcare is a human right but the people losing their internships and job offers to the hiring freeze are straight up hilarious.

I've started taking online art classes from this website called Proko.
It's been what, 15 years since I last tried to draw in a photorealistic style? I think I must've been in middle school back then. 😅
Obviously there's a lot more left to be desired, his head is supposed to be tilted down, I didn't get the head shape and jawline quite right, his eyes are looking at entirely the wrong way, and he looks WAY older in my drawing compared to the original photo, but considering just how long it's been since I last tried something like this, I'm almost pleasantly..... surprised? Like, I assumed the skill atrophy would be a lot worse. And it's only the first lesson in a course titled "Drawing Basics", so I guess the only way left for me to go is up!! 😁
#mmari draws#mmari rambles#proko#sketches#pencil sketch#pencil on paper#also I mentioned earlier that it's been like 15 years since I last tried to draw in a realistic style??#well I'm pretty sure it's been even longer since the last time I tried to draw a human face without relying on the loomis method#....and this somehow looks a lot better than the faces I normally draw????#maybe my ovedependence on the loomis method was holding me back. idk.#i'm flabbergasted#anyway I'll make sure to use an actual sketchbook next time#I need to practice drawing on bigger surfaces anyway--- every scribble looks better when it's too teeny tiny for you to see all the flaws#also the 4b pencil I used produced super dark lines at even the slightest pressure#so I struggled with the values a lot#so maybe next time I'll try drawing in b and 2b pencils#note to self: look into one of those mechanical pencils for artists that come with those 2mm thick leads
