The Little Girl Who Cried Wolf, And Meant It (Brianna's PB) Crystal Lake, 6/9/23
By Brianna
The morning started off at 5:00 A.M in the Bland house. We made our way to Crystal Lake but first a pitstop at Kwik Trip for some glazers. We arrived at the boat launch around 6:00 and hastily made our way out to the honey hole.

Ashlynn's eyes followed the schools of bluegill lurking around the boat. Since fishing was so slow we decided to tie on panfish lures and caught a couple dandys.

Unfortunately, the honey hole was short of honey (big bass.) Some may say empty.
Fortunately, daddy has more than one honey hole. We made our way over to another spot. I had a Texas rigged Tequila Sunrise powerworm on and my dad thought to himself, "nothing will go after that" (considering we were fishing is super thick grass). I however had other plans. As I casted out, I felt the bite of a lifetime. "That was a huge bite!" I exclaimed, but missed it. I had been saying this all morning, but hadn't caught anything, therefore, my dad assumed it was just a girl crying wolf syndrome, but my dad had no idea that this fish was the equivalent of a wolfpack. I quickly reeled in and casted out in the same spot. About three minutes went by. Nothing, no bite. When Ashlynn told me to reel in because she wanted to see all of the bluegill jump once my line hit the water. Just as I was starting to reel, I felt a residence, but it wasn't weeds. What I didn't know yet, is that it was a wolf. I questioned out loud if there was really a fish. It was very soon after that that the resistance turned into pulling drag. My dad whipped his head and yelled, "That's a fish!" It jumped out of the water multiple times. By this time I was telling Ashlynn to get the net over and over. The fish caused a bit of a scare when it buried itself deep in the weeds because I thought the fish was stuck, and gone forever. Luckily I kept tension on the line, pulled as hard as I could and the fish came out. I guided the fish right into the net that Ashlynn perfectly angled. We took it out of the net for some pictures, but quickly realized this was not the caliber fish you hold with one hand. I grabbed it from the lip and tummy to land a great picture.

We clipped the fish onto the scale, and it came in at five pounds, my biggest bass ever!

"The Christmas Bush" - The Blaniels Family Christmas Tree, 11/25/22
So, we took the Christmas tree to a new level this year. It feels like a new bar has been set...maybe one that will never get broken.
After last's year's oversized Chrismas tree, we (I) were not going to be outdone. My goal was to have a tree bigger than 2022. Which is tough when you consider our ceilings are 10 foot. To out-do last year, we were gonna have to go wide.
And Home Depot came through again. On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Home Depot was proudly displaying (in front of the store) possibly the fattest Chrismast Tree I had ever seen. The only problem was that it was a Blue Spruce...and we didn't want a blue Christmas tree!

As I talked to the tree vendor at Home Depot, he told me the tree on display wouldn't fit through the bailer, and therefore likely wouldn't fit through the door to our house. He suggested some pre-bailed Balsam Firs in the back lot. He said they were probably even fatter than the spruce, but, we'd have to take a risk and buy it all bundled up...
I really didn't want to do that, but Dyan encouraged me to take the risk. So we did.
We brought it home, placed it in the stand (still in the netting) and prepared for the big reveal. Dyan handed me the scissors, and I sliced through the netting. On the final cut, the tree limbs dropped to their natural state revealing what would resemblethe shape of a bush rather than an tree.
It was enormous.

We had thought placing the stand 4 feet from the wall would allow for sufficient space, but no, the tree still had branches that rested up the wall. The tree was so thick, watering it at the base wasn't an option. We created a watering system that included a tube hidden in the tree that delivered water from a funnel down into the tree stand. I was surprised this kind of contraction didn't already exist! Seems like something that would sell really well at Christmas!
Scarlett and I strung the lights, while Brianna and Dyan hung ornaments.

The tree was absolutely enormous, and the most beautiful Christmas Bush once Dyan had finished with all the trimmings.
