All eyes are on the government. After three dizzying years of the Trump administration, the world was dealt a once-in-three-generations pandemic

Income inequality, institutionalized racism, and all-consuming capitalism came under closer scrutiny than time had previously permitted. Now more than ever (a phrase which seems to be used now more than ever,) voters are energized to exercise their vocal civic duties.

Brittanye Morris is a politician who works for those people.

Morris is currently running unopposed to become the Democratic District Court Judge for Texas’s 333rd District. As governmental change has permeated the popular lexicon more intensely, citizens have become more aware of the crucial role local government plays in shaping the realities of daily life. In her seat, Morris will oversee civil cases — disputes between citizens and organizations, like foreclosures.

Texans for Lawsuit Reform, a “non-profit research organization that provides objective analysis of the challenges presented by the Texas civil justice system,” notes the difficulties of this system which its participants inherit. In The Texas Judicial System: Recommendations for Reform, the organization writes that district courts, “which are the trial courts of general jurisdiction, sit in a spider web of districts having overlapping geographic boundaries. Often a single county is in two or three district court districts, with each of those districts being comprised of a different group of counties. This knotty trial-court structure is arcane and inefficient, and it invites forum shopping.”

The organization continues, “Among the structure’s many failings is the inability to effectively handle complex civil cases, which require significant and specialized judicial resources. While the federal court system and the court systems in other major states have special courts or procedures to handle complex or specialized litigation, Texas does not. Consequently, complex litigation in Texas often is conducted in trial courts lacking the knowledge or resources to handle that litigation.”

Morris brings fresh eyes, grit, and a wealth of life experience to this complicated position. Her website states that she is a Houston native “born and raised in a middle class household.” Her mother was employed as an educator in the public school system, is father is a retired police lieutenant. As a child, Morris was very active, participating in everything from debate to girl scouts. “I grew up in a very diverse area,” Morris told me. She was was a conduit to this variety, diversifying her interests and activities to occupy every arena.

Morris earned her Bachelor’s in government history (fact check) from University of Houston, and then a juris doctorate from from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at the prestigious Texas Southern University. “I guess I gravitated to it because it made sense,” Morrise mused, contemplating her interest in the major. “There’s a certain continuity to history, like math. It gave you a sense of understanding about backgrounds and about the formation of things. Government segued nicely into that because so much of history is surrounding the government or governmental structures.”

Her driving spirit mixed with her intellect allowed her to overcome the adversities she faced in achieving her educational goals. Morris recalled, “I actually attempted to work during law school the first year, even though it's not recommended. I nearly failed out.” While she knew her parents wouldn’t let her fail, they pushed her to earn her achievements. Morris financed her own way through law school by working at local post office for five hours most evenings.

“I realized somewhere in there that I really did like to litigate,” she recalled of the grindstone era. She learned that she liked property law, and began interning at a community college’s in-house counsel's section. From there, she worked for a bankruptcy trustee.

“During this time, he didn't have an opening for another staff attorney,” Morris intimated. In need of funds for her post-grad life, Morris took a job at the local attorney general’s office, (fact check) a position which she likened to traffic court, but collecting property taxes. “I would have stayed there, but there was no room for upward mobility,” she said. “You’re not going to get the trial experience, or you're not going to get actual litigation experience.”

“Obviously, you're not the good guy in this situation,” she conceded of the role, though she did gain an intimate knowledge of how officials can help their communities. “You have the ability to inform people to go seek counsel, or you have the ability to allow them resets that may very well save the home their grandmothers or whomever worked for.”

“I really feel like representation matters, and certain voices have been marginalized,” Morris said. Having built her own career of her own accord, she possesses all the grit and effort that endeavor requires. A life like this generally proves adventurous, experience-rich. Morris believes her background lends a core competency to her legal expertise. Rather than choosing to immediately foreclose a home, she can instead allow defendants more opportunity to recover — more time to explore options and acquire attorneys.

“I’ve been through situations to where you're working the best you can, and for whatever reason, your ends don't meet,” Morris stated, referencing her experiences working through law school. One time, she returned to her apartment to find her internet turned off. Assessing her expenses, she decided she could comfortably pay the bill. The next night, she returned home to find her electricity shut off. “That’s a different perspective than someone who had a life where things were afforded to them. You can understand the struggle,” she said. Morris asserted that judges must rule solely based on the law, and “your personal biases or prejudices do not come in, but you never leave your experiences at the door.”

Morris waited for her opportune moment to make a move on the position. “You want to be the change you want to see, of course, but to not do that in a strategic way does a disservice,” she explained. This year felt ripe with its intense focus on politics. “In our community in particular, more and more people are wanting more representation,” she said.

The hopeful political upstart faced obstacles straight away, butting heads with rigid local political structures by opposing the incumbent, a fellow Democrat. “Running against an incumbent from your same party is never a popular choice,” she allowed, matter-of-factly. Cut off from their support, she added that “You’re not going to get support from large donors or large people, because effectively you're the underdog. Very few people are willing to bet on an underdog fresh out of the gate.”

Instead, she went grassroots, an approach which made more ideological sense to her anyways. “What people tend to forget so often is that it's your community, your constituency, that gives you that seat,” Morris remarked. “It is not yours. It belongs to the citizens and the community in which you serve.”

Morris began attending town halls and civic club meetings across the county. She went to the neighborhood clubs and visited different religious organizations. “The courts are tools for the people to access justice. So in a true sense of that, then why not go into the community?” she asked.

Some people might grow jaded from opposing an opponent so imposing as their own political party, but Morris confidently assured me that she emerged from the experience with her optimism and excitement for government intact. “You can be cynical and say, ‘government sucks.’ What practical purpose is that gonna serve?” she asked. “What I took out of it is, the community will rally and people will support.”

As communities strive to establish diverse representation in their democratic systems, Morris noted, “It isn’t limited to people of African descent… Diversity is just that: diverse. We should strive to have all kinds of people on there. Our county is very diverse, very populous, so there needs to be representation of all kinds on the bench.” She brings her own experience and goals into the equation. As a District Judge, Morris intends “to create a judiciary that's going to be open, accessible, and transparent.” She also has plans to work with high schools to host teen courts and encourage students to embrace their civic duties.

Though she’s overcome obstacles from financing to party opposition, no victory has been greater than the ones Morris can claim from her own internal battles. She noted that the academic difficulty of transitioning from undergraduate to law school inspired fears, at moments, about her own abilities. “It was a really eye opening experience to question myself, for the first time, in a real candid way. I had never had adversity when it came to learning, or adversity in school,” Morris explained. “I've learned that tomorrow will worry about itself. You just have to worry about today and hope you may get to tomorrow.”

After all the strife associated with law school, as she was working in her unfulfilling post-grad role and struggling to make ends meet, Morris was also studying for the dreaded bar exam. Then she learned that she was suffering from stage four kidney failure. “Now you're studying for this bar. It's a three day test. And you're just like, ‘Oh, my gosh, what if I don't pass it?’” She recalled of her anxiety at the time. “I really had to compartmentalize everything and put all my effort into [the exam.]” Morris put the procedure off until after the bar, focusing everything she had on this final push. After passing the exam, she received her kidney transplant. “It wasn't easy by any stretch of the imagination,” she said, “but I think it's those trying times that really made me appreciate where I have gotten in life.”

I wonder how history will look back on this era. Sure, we’ll all remember the presidential elections of this past generation. Some might even remember the subtler conflicts — characters like Condoleeza Rice and James Comey and Mitch McConnell. But increasingly, as engaged citizens adopt the pragmatic approach to change which Morris has instituted in her own life, society is shifting its focus to the foot soldiers — those who run government’s daily machinations. In order for sweeping change to take shape and take root, our government needs an infusion of authenticity in the form of real people wanting to make a tangible difference. Morris is less talk and more action. She moves from a place of informed balance, equidistant from head and heart, but marrying the unique fires of both. Applied to our present context, this is the way our government was truly intended to function.

Upon contemplating how history might remember her campaign and judgeship, Morris decided, “Only history can dictate that. When you think about like the Great's of our time, they weren't that at the time.” While she doesn't consider herself the equivalent to a Malcolm or a Martin, she did note, “It wasn't until long after them leaving this earth that they both became historical icons.” As always, she focuses her energy where it’s feasibly useful instead. “For me, it's very important just to live in a way that I'll be proud of and my children will be proud of.”

While her career has proved momentous in its completely individual way, Morris believes the type of success she now enjoys is accessible to anyone, provided they’re prepared for a non-linear route. “Be open,” she espoused. “That’s the biggest advice I can give to anybody. I think we get so set on where we want to go that we aren't open to any opportunities and possibilities. It’s those opportunities, those possibilities and those twists and turns, that get you where you ultimately need to be.” Morris’s own life has already taken her so far, and she hasn't even graduated from her twenties. She is a force to watch, a flame ready to multiply.

Peru has some of the most incredible landscapes on our glorious planet, and some of the most impressive are the rainbow mountains in Cusco. The first to be ‘discovered’ was Vinicunca, also known as Rainbow Mountain, whose iconic image is spread all over the internet and attracts thousands of tourists each year. It wasn’t alone, though. Since then, two other mountains have come to the attention of locals and then the rest of the world. These are the rainbow mountains in Palccoyo and another named Pallay Punchu. Each mountain is just as impressive as the other and they all offer a little something different. In this article, we’ll provide you with a description of each and tell you the best route to take to the rainbow mountains of Peru. OVERVIEW This is the most popular of all the rainbow mountains and is the most impressive. It towers over you when you get up close and is truly stunning. The hike is tough as there’s a steep ascent up to 5,200 masl, so the altitude will also have a big effect. You’ll see wildlife along the way, like llamas and alpacas, and also the astounding rolling hills. When you visit Vinicunca, you also get the chance to add on a trip to the Mars-like Red Valley, which is an excellent sight to see indeed. THE BEST ROUTE TO VINICUNCA You can visit this mountain with a tour group or alone. You need to wake up around 3 am if you want to beat the big crowds. You need to begin by making your way from Cusco to a small village called Cusipata, which takes around 2 hours. From here, you need to get to Pampachiri. If you go with a tour group all transport will be included, but by yourself, you’ll need to find separate vehicles to each place. At the community, you’ll need to buy your ticket if you haven’t already, and will then start the three and a half hour round trip to Vinicunca and back. You should only spend around 30-45 minutes at the top to make sure you get back down to the vehicles before it’s too late. Extra Note: You can also visit the Vinicunca rainbow mountain on one of the Ausangate trek routes. When you do this, you arrive before all the other tourists and get a fantastic private view. PALCCOYO HIGHLIGHTS

Get to see more than one outstanding rainbow mountain. Visit the Checacupe bridge. Enjoy an off-the-beaten-path route. Take a more relaxing hike along a flat route that a person of any fitness level can complete. Observe flora and fauna only found in the Andean mountains.

OVERVIEW This is a far less-visited rainbow mountain and you’ll likely only see 20 or 30 other people all day. If you like to avoid crowds, this is an excellent option. You’ll also get a fantastic view of not one, but various rainbow-colored mountains. Along the hike, you’ll see small villages, Andean wildlife, and some incredible scenery. The hike itself is relatively easy to complete as most of the trail is flat. You’ll be heading up to 4,900 masl and the duration of the walk there and back is an hour and a half. THE BEST ROUTE TO PALCCOYO You can also visit this mountain by yourself or with a tour. Whichever way you do it, you’ll likely follow the most common and best route. After getting up early, you’ll need to board transport that takes you to the district of Combapata. Before you get to the village, you have to turn left at the Checacupe bridge. The same car will then take you another hour and a half to a car park from where you’ll start the 40-50 minute walk to the mountain. People of any fitness level can enjoy this hike as it’s short and flat. Once you’ve spent all the time you want at the top, it’s time to head back to the vehicle. PALLAY PUNCHU

HIGHLIGHTS Head away from the crowds on this virgin route in the Andes. See a stunning mountain in the form of a colorful poncho. Take a route that’s unseen by many tourists. Capture incredible photos of this unique landscape.

OVERVIEW This wonderful mountain is visited by very few tourists and is truly breathtaking. It really looks like one of the beautiful ponchos that the Andean people are often seen wearing, which is why it also has this intriguing name. On this hike, you’ll reach 4,700 masl and there are a few difficult stretches. You’ll get to see some stunning parts of the Andes, including the mysterious Langui-Layo Lagoon, sharp mountains, and valleys of red earth. Once again, you can go by yourself or with a tour operator. THE BEST ROUTE TO PALLAY PUNCHU From the city of Cusco, you’ll need to make your way to the town of Sicuani. Then, you’ll need to catch a car to Layo. Once you get to this small town, there are a few ways you can get to Pallay Punchu. Some of the routes are extreme and can be a little dangerous. For this particular mountain, we highly recommend going with a guide who’s an expert on the trails. You’ll be able to spend some time at the top and around the lagoon before you head back down. RAINBOW MOUNTAINS OF PERU TRAVEL TIPS To maximize your experience and ensure a great day, we recommend taking these tips into consideration before and during your day out. TAKE PRECAUTIONS REGARDING THE ALTITUDE Remember that you’ll be heading up to a high altitude on any of these hikes. For this reason, you need to take lots of care before and during the trip to avoid feeling ill or finding things too challenging. When you book your tour or plan the route you’re going to take, make sure you make time to spend at least 2-3 days in the city of Cusco beforehand. This way, your body will have time to acclimate properly and you’re much less likely to experience symptoms of altitude sickness. Unfortunately, when people don’t acclimate as they should, they sometimes need to cancel their trip to the mountains. GET SOME PRACTICE IN Before you come to Peru, we highly recommend partaking in other one day hikes to get your body prepared. You can also spend some time exploring Cusco by foot before you head on one of the more difficult hikes to help your body become accustomed to exertion at this altitude. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER At high altitudes, it’s much easier to become dehydrated. Your body is working harder and you’re also much closer to the sun, which can also make you need to drink more water. Keeping your body hydrated is essential up in the mountains. PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE SUN You are much closer to the sun up here, and you can get sunburnt in minutes, even if the sun is behind the clouds. Make sure you protect your skin from the UV rays by using a sun hat and wearing factor 50 or more sunscreen. You also need to make sure your eyes are protected with sunglasses. PLAN AHEAD We highly recommend planning your trip in advance. With this guide, you should be able to get a good idea of which mountain you prefer to visit. June, July, and August are very busy regarding visitors, however, Palccoyo and Pallay Punchu will still be relatively quiet so these are also good months to go to either of those. From November to March, there’s rain most days and this can make the trails slippery. February is particularly wet and you need to have lots of waterproof gear and boots or shoes with very good grip. WHAT’S THE TEMPERATURE LIKE AT THE RAINBOW MOUNTAINS? At the top of the mountains, the temperatures can get very chilly, especially if it’s windy. When you’re walking you’ll get warm but will soon cool down once you’re standing still. It’s best to wear plenty of layers to take off and put on when needed and take a woolly hat, scarf, and gloves. Carp Fishing – 2020 Park Lake, Mayhem!

This time last year, as I write this in January, I remember being critical of the constant doom and gloom coming from various media outlets about a possible ‘pandemic’ that was about to hit our shores.

Strangely for me, I had my fishing head on and actually had 3 bites during the course of that month, on a notoriously difficult lake, so you can understand the reason for my winter keenness!

Mother nature dealt a cruel blow with the river bursting its banks and going straight into the lake, colouring it up in the process and pretty much putting an end to some action that was to be had.

It wasn’t until well into March that I was to receive my next bite in the form of Mr Angry and then not long after that, we were all about to experience something that we never thought would happen in our lifetime, with the lockdown.

After the sterling efforts from the Angling Trust, I decided to not bother with the park lake and instead spend some quality fishing time at my other syndicate with my son. We spent most of that time carrying out some much-needed maintenance with a few burn ups that every kid enjoys! Throw in a couple of carp for good measure, he seemed almost as happy as he would be on his Xbox!!

Eventually, though, my thoughts were that I needed to be back at the park lake. This was to be my 3rd season on White Swan and I was determined to fish it my way, as I wasn’t really happy with how the past seasons have gone. Don’t get me wrong, I have always had my feet firmly on the ground as despite there being in excess of 200 carp swimming around the 26 acre lake, you’ll be hard pushed to actually see more than 70 of them grace the bank. I’ve fished a lot of circuit waters over the years and this is without doubt the hardest of them all. Over the past two years I was of the opinion that if the fish were showing over me and I wasn’t getting a bite, then I was getting ‘done’. I also knew that if I wasn’t creating chances after applying my watercraft, then they weren’t feeding on what I was giving them. Simple, I know, but not necessarily easy to work out when you are there doing it, it was more about reflecting on those experiences.

We’ve all done it, where we listen to others and we find out what the going method is and we try to deploy it, but the truth is, others might be better applying that method than we are, so that was my reason I wanted to apply some changes.

My rigs were the first thing I changed, together with my lead arrangement with the latter being inline and the former moving away from pop-ups to bottom bait rigs. I also went against the norm and used long hook-links as the shorter versions had been used extensively. Finally, I moved away from the ‘bits and pieces’ approach and just fished bait, but applied using a catapult or a throwing stick at night as the gulls would just get the better of you if attempted in the day.

With the new restrictions in place, we were back after the lake closed for its annual spawning break and, as you can imagine, we were all desperate to get fishing again, although it still didn’t feel right, but we were lucky to not be stuck indoors for any longer.

My first piece of action was a few weeks into June. It was one of those glorious June days, where the sky was a solid blue and the lake was slowly moving in a multitude of directions from the gentle breeze. The carp were also evidently showing and feeding in the first bay out of the car park. With no one around, I was pinching myself as to why that was the case?! Simon, the head bailiff said I’d be mad not to go into a swim called ‘Jays’! The swim had only just been vacated so I didn’t fancy dropping into it, so, with prior knowledge of a swim called the boards a few up, I moved into there.

Applying the aforementioned plan, two rods were put out against a solid weed bed, one on a very hard, well established clay spot and the other, a slightly softer silt area.

The fish remained in the area and, unlike usual with White Swan, no one moved next to me or opposite! The following day arrived with the customary overcast summer conditions. The odd bubble was popping to the surface, keeping my mind wandering together with the odd head and shoulder from a number of different carp, simply lovely!

Late that morning, the silt rod’s tip pulled down and the music to every carp anglers dream was to pierce the airwaves as the ATTS alarm screamed. My mate Ian literally walked into the swim as I was connected to a dark common rolling on the surface of the crystal clear water. At 27lb, I was delighted to get one with my new, but non-revolutionary ideas put into practice.

I had a couple more trips that month but the fish were on the move again, as is so often the case with there, so it was more a case of learning and watching rather than catching.

My drought continued well into August, although I wasn’t fishing as hard with other important things with the family to attend, so it wasn’t anything to start questioning with what I was doing, angling wise.

I found myself moving swims a lot. I suppose I was kind of chasing them, but at the same time introducing my bait with the help of a couple of mates that were also on the same stuff.

I really wanted to get the bait accepted by the fish, as do so many other anglers on there and that generally involves a bit of pain in trying to establish areas and it usually doesn’t pay its dividends until September.

I was mucking about in a swim called the beach, after seeing a couple of fish show over the subsequent trips. This swim is notoriously difficult to get a bite out of and in the past it has required a lot of preparation work in order to achieve that.

There was a large weed bed positioned in front of it, very encouraging, roughly about 30-40 yards out that made this swim far more favourable than its usually productive neighbouring swim, called the woods. The only explanation I could think of as to why the woods swim wasn’t producing was the lack of weed present in front of there as otherwise, I would have probably given the beach a steer.

I did a fair bit of weed clearing for the left hand rod. I was happy with the spot, a firm silt area, but the line lay leading up to it, not so. I was getting quite paranoid about it actually, so I decided to try out the new Mirage Platinum Fluorocarbon to somewhat ease that paranoia, which helped, as in my opinion, it is the best carp fishing mainline Gardner Tackle has produced to date. It’s versatility, sinking properties and strength were streets ahead of the nearest offering, but I still needed to do my prep work to get the best out of it and that was painful to say the least aided with the Gardner weed rake! But, they say time put in, equals reward!?

After a couple of short trips in the beach, I was on the move again, as the fish were showing in pretty much the furthest areas from where I was fishing. With my patience dwindling, I again found myself jumping from swim to swim in an attempt to be on the fish, feeling more and more detached from actually getting amongst the carp.

It was on one very sunny afternoon that I saw a group of fish in front of the beach again, in fact I was desperately looking for anything to move onto as I was so bored with what I was doing at the other end and had another night to fish at my disposal. This really was a gift, they were at multiple levels, some on the surface and some feeding on the bottom.

Another angler was fishing a swim to the right of this and out of respect, I didn’t cast a lead in the lake until the activity had settled down. He was going later that day, so that eased my conscience despite the area being the beach’s water.

The spots were easy to find and two rods with good line lay were positioned. I’d baited those spots on numerous occasions, so I was feeling confident and as the beautiful day moved into night, I pulted a good few hundred baits around the zones and then proceeded to throw the ball for Barney my lab, up and down the path behind, to wear us both out for the night!

There were still fish slopping out in front of me and the lake was quieter than usual, so I was really hoping that I would be in with a chance, overnight.

However, nothing. Where were the fish, I thought as I made the first cuppa of the day? There wasn’t a breeze on the lake. Both Barney and I took advantage of the lack of people and the tranquillity of the early dawn by standing at the edge of the swim, eyes peeled! If something was to show, we would have seen it and it wasn’t long as a very large, dark looking chunk showed a good 150 yards over the other side of the lake, which wasn’t ideal, but it was still in the middle area of the lake, which I took as a positive.

Thankfully, what seemed against the odds, the swim came alive at just after 8am. Sheets of bubbles were evident in multiple areas indicating a few fish and before long this was complemented with the signs of carp just breaking the surface with their heads.

I rang my mate Phil and said ‘it’s got to happen, they are all over me, mate!’ He was at the other end of the lake on the start of a campaign that required a healthy dose of commitment! I was now getting nervous about the whole situation, as I only had a few hours left before I needed to pack up and to leave the swim without a bite would have left me in a state of bewilderment. An opportunity like that doesn’t happen often, so you have to make it work. Eventually, the right-hand rod just ripped off and without so much as a thought, I bypassed my waders and jumped into the shallows to connect with the fish that sought sanctuary of the weed beds before finally being greeted by my net. My dog looked at me as if I’d lost the plot when I started punching the water as a show of immense satisfaction!

Phil came around to help with the photos, recognising the fish as a ‘proper’ one in the form of the 2nd Big Fully and he did a masterful job with the camera. With its heavily plated scales glimmering in the faint sun, it truly was one of the country’s stunners!

I couldn’t wait to return, and a couple of mates had said to get back into the beach as they were still showing in there, and it was free, so it was rude not to!

Sure enough, the activity was almost as frequent as when I had last had the 2nd Fully and I hadn’t ruined the chance of any action from a successful couple of casts with the weed rake and positioning of the baits.

My mate Paul was over the other side and he doesn’t miss a thing. He knew I was in with a chance and the excitement was running away from me, although, I had a niggling doubt that the fish were ‘doing’ me. I wasn’t overly happy with the hooking from the rig when I caught that last fish and the next morning, with not so much as a line twitch, one of my rigs had the hook firmly embedded into an extremely hard hook bait. That was enough, I knew that they were on the bait, but changes needed to be made. With a family holiday due the following week, it was time for some reflection.

My good pal Gary was keeping me informed with what was going on and he was doing a grand job of locating the fish and not letting on to the other anglers.

I had a couple of nights ahead of me early September and with Gary in the Oaks, he suggested I go into a swim known as number 8 as the fish were showing very close in. I found a couple of really nice clear spots in the weed, pretty much where he said they were showing. During that session, we saw a few but they were more in front of the swim to the left of me. For the first time, the area I was seeing them could be fished from the left side of the swim, because a tree had come down in the summer, giving you far greater access.

Just before setting off home, after a non-productive couple of nights, I had a good plumb about towards the zone that I kept seeing them show whilst drinking shed loads of tea with Gary and Sam that morning. I found a gem of a clay spot about 45 yards out, which was surrounded by Canadian pondweed, apart from a nice channel leading up to it that with some further work with the weed rake, I could get my line really down on the bottom. I knew that the line lay from the swim next door wouldn’t offer me anywhere near the advantage from 8 due to the really deep margin and I doubted anyone would go in there as it wasn’t popular, but in all fairness, the spot was directly in front of that swim, so I needed to be mindful of that possibility.

With no one angling around me on that late Sunday morning, I put in the remainder of my bait, consisting of chops and whole boilies via the Spomb and then just hoped I could get in there the following week.

The next week came around and with literally nothing else bar work going on in my world, I couldn’t think of much else than getting back into 8.

I knew the swim had been fished but not from where I was intending and thankfully, it was free when I arrived. At that time of year on Dinton, it helps if you’ve got a campaign you are working on, as they respond to prepared areas, however, keeping a popular swim like 8 unoccupied was never going to be easy, especially if it kicked off. I’m not traditionally one to have preconceived ideas, but I needed to stick to a plan.

I’d tweaked the rigs, keeping the long hook link, exchanging the material from tungsten ultra-sink to 25lb Mirage, coupled with size 6 spinner style Mugga’s. I still kept with the heavy inline bolt-bombs using a big loop in the hook link to ensure some movement, but I wasn’t too concerned because of the hard areas I was fishing.

With both rods positioned and ample bait applied with the pult alone in the dark, I popped down 2 swims to my right for a cuppa with Phil. I literally sat down and my remote signalled 2 beeps which had me flying up the path! The rod tip was pulled down and the bobbin was tight to the alarm as without taking any line from the spool! My initial thoughts were that the fish had already got into the weedbed behind, but I had no issues in guiding it towards Phil with the waiting net. A nice 27lb common was really the tonic I needed. The hook was exactly where I’d wanted it, in fact I needed forceps to take it out!

Nothing further happened that trip, although I was able to apply more bait to the areas, hoping that I could get in there again the following week, but as it happened, I couldn’t get down because of work commitments, so I returned nearly two weeks later. We were now into the prime back end of September and with the rain just starting to come down, I was most grateful to get the dog under the bivvy quick before he really started to pong in the confines of no8 again!

The spot felt that I’d caught the fish from my last trip felt good and with not too much effort with the weed rake, I was once again happy with the line lay.

I was persisting with the right-hand spot, but I wasn’t overall happy with this one, but moving it closer to the other rod would have been cutting my nose off to spite my face.

Keeping things the same, with rigs and tactics, everything felt good and once that rain stopped the fish showed where they were and I couldn’t have been in a better position! Almost exactly the same time as the last bite, my left-hand rod signalled a couple of beeps. Taking my time, I put the waders on and held the line with the rod still on the alarm only for it to slightly tension and then slacken off. Without hesitation I lifted into what was clearly a carp that again, was not in any weed and after a fairly disparaging tussle, it was seamlessly scooped into the net. I practised my much needed honing skills at self-takes, before returning the small common at just over 21lb. The hook hold was again perfect and, although it wasn’t cold, the bites were as if we were in the depths of winter, very strange.

Lining up the cast in the dark to the silhouetted treeline horizon and hitting the clip perfectly, the lead came down with a satisfying thud and the line was sunk beautifully.

I retired confidently for the night, although the fish could still be heard rolling on the surface with nothing else competing with the noise, making it very hard to sleep.

Like a true keen carp angler, I was up bright and early with a tea in hand and the dog sleeping on my bed as soon as I got off it, the lazy git!

Beep, beep from the left alarm and the line pulling up tight yet again, no line coming off the spool, but I was on it and before long I had a far better fish in the net that gave a much better account of itself!

Joe, an angler a few swims down from me was on his way to work early that morning, so before he carried on up the path, I gave him a quick lesson in how to use my digital SLR in ‘P’ mode before he suggested he used his own camera, which was something that the likes of Kardashian’s are used to looking at! At that point I decided he didn’t need any more of my photography training skills and I shut up and left him to do a superb job!!

The fish was another typical Dinton stunner that had put on over 5lb in a year at 35.07. They were munching all right!
