Getting the most out of combining satin and gloss clear bra on a Porsche GT3

A good friend of ours brought in his new Porsche GT3 to get it fully protected with Clear Bra. We have covered hundreds of Porsche 911s in the past, but usually in either all gloss or all satin. This is the first Carrera from Modern Image with satin and gloss clear bra. Of course, that was not enough, so we also added red accents to compliment factory red the calipers.

Our first task was to determine how to combine the satin and gloss clear bra, or, more importantly, what areas would be covered in satin and what areas would be gloss. Because we love how cars look with a satin clear bra we wanted it to be predominantly satin. The satin finish mutes many of the reflections and turning them into a sheen that makes the body lines more visible. When it came to where to put the gloss, we decided to cover the upper half from the window lines. The 911 already has a body line that runs about that area so it works well for a seam line.

When we protect cars with a full satin and gloss clear bra we try to minimize the seam lines to as much as possible. In this case, we chose to cover where the two finishes came together with the red accent color. Coming from the window and sweeping into the intake area allowed us to tie in the red accents and cover the seam at the same time. We also added the red accents around the GT3 badging, the lower portion of the side mirrors, and finally, with a big “Porsche” logo on the rear wing.

Choosing between satin and gloss clear bra.

When it comes to getting your full vehicle protected with a clear bra you have options. Most commonly when paint protection is applied we use gloss clear bra. It gives your car a look as though nothing has been done to it while giving you piece of mind that there is a barrier of protection over all the paint. To change up the look of your car we can also protect with a satin clear bra. Satin and gloss clear bra both provide the same amount of paint protection with the only difference being the look. Gloss keeps the shiny look of brand new factory paint while satin maintains the factory color and shows off the body lines. Whether you choose all gloss, all satin, or a mix of satin and gloss clear bra for your car you can drive the back hills with confidence that you will be protected.

  Brushed Black Metallic works great for accents

  Black cars have always had a great look about them. No matter what the make is black is one of the most common colors you can get. So when you think about personalizing your black car you don’t have to wrap the whole thing to get a great look. For this Rolls Royce Ghost, which is already elegant, we weren’t looking to change the color of the car. The reason the car came to the shop is be cause even though it looks great in black, the owner wanted something to make his stand out a bit more. Our idea was to add some brushed black metallic vinyl.

Once we showed him the vinyl from 3M and he fell in love with the look of it. Brushed black metallic is a specialty film that has is textured finish mimicking the look of a brushed metal. With a similar appearance to the brushed stainless hood that offered by Rolls Royce but closer in color to the rest of the car it is a perfect paring. In addition to the hood we also combined brushed black metallic and satin black to tone down some of the chrome areas.

Common areas to black out with satin black vinyl are the window trim, the door handles, and other parts that come chrome from factory. As you can see from the pic above, not every little piece that was chrome got wrapped. On this Rolls Royce Ghost we covered the trim of the windows in satin black the door handles with Brushed black metallic, and the chrome piece at the rear with both. Using the material throughout the car helps to tie them all together creating a clean finished look.

Some other good options for wrapping accents in vinyl are either a different color brushed based on the color of your car or fiber wrap which has the appearance of carbon fiber. We often use carbon fiber wrap on sports cars because real carbon fiber is used to make cars lighter. We can also wrap the window trim in gloss black. When it comes to the window trim blackout it really depends on personal preference.

  The Bentley Continental GT3-R is one of those great looking Cars that is inspired by a track only race car. With production limited to only 300 units getting your hands on one is tough especially considering all the changes they brought from the Bentley Continental GT3. One of the most striking visual additions are the two toned stripes in black and green. We were tasked with taking a white W12 and adding a similar stripe kit using the customers more preferred accent color, red.

With the vehicle at our shop in San Diego, Our graphic designers were tasked with creating a kit that can be made with any two colors allowing freedom from factory colors. For this kit we also did not include the GT3 logo that is on the GT3-R. This leaves the customer with a clean two-tone stripe kit that beautifully accents the contours of the body.

   Going from Gloss Silver to a Matte Metallic Emerald Green Wrap

  So you went to the dealership and couldn’t find the color you wanted… all they had were the basic colors that everyone has black, white, or silver. Luckily you can change that common color, that everybody already has, to something that reflects you in about a week. We completely changed the look of this Mercedes GLS 500 by covering the factory gloss silver paint job with Matte Metallic Emerald Green by Avery.

Selecting the right wrap is easy because of the wide range of colors and finishes available. Using Avery along with other brands like 3M, Arlon, Hexis, and Oracal we offer hundreds of car wrap possibilities for you to choose from.

One of the most important things to consider is the finish that you want.

Gloss – Satin – Matte -Textured

Each of these finishes offers different colors to choose from.

Gloss most closely resembles the same finish that cars are painted from the factory. Gloss finish comes in solid, metallic, and pearlescent colors.

Matte are the opposite of those factory finishes. They mute all the reflections into one blended reflection Highlighting the body lines of the vehicle. They also are usually available with solid colors, metallics, and what is called aluminum (looks like a matte version of anodized metal).

Satin wrap should be halfway between gloss and matte finishes. They usually comes in solid colors and pearlescent colors.

Textured vinyl are what would be known as carbon, and brushed. They have limited colors, but the textures can create a good look.

We have books from manufacturers that you can browse through, as well as larger sample pieces of more common colors. When you stop by the shop we will go over exactly what you want covered. The basics are just covering the painted panels in a color. After that possibilities are endless with combining additional colors and finishes to trim pieces, mirrors, spoilers, and emblems.

Kawasaki’s Ninja H2 paint job is a thing of beauty

From the time it was first dropped off until it left our shop, the paint job on this Kawasaki Ninja H2 was one of amazement. This bike isn’t just black, it’s so much more. They title it Mirror Coated Spark Black. It is a black tone that has glass flakes in a layer of the paint along with a finish layer made of silver. The glass flakes catch your eye in the light while the mirror finish gives an all new depth that is not seen on a mass-production vehicle.

Even though it is a mass-production bike, the paint and finish work on the Ninja H2 is done by hand. To create the mirror finish they use a chemical process that leaves a coat of real silver behind. The concern in getting an amazing mirror finish is that all the layers beneath come out as perfectly smooth as possible, which is the reason they are done by hand. Finally the paint gets a double coat of clear to keep the silver layer from oxidizing which would make it lose its luster.

Protect the mirror finish with clear bra

With all of the hard work you want to make sure nothing happens to the overall paint job. Because the silver layer is formed by a chemical process you can’t just touch up a small area. Scratches, nicks, and abrasion from riding can create a problem that requires re-painting the whole piece, a costly endeavor. In anticipation of that possibly happening the owner had us cover the painted areas with a layer of clear bra. This will keep the paint just as new as it was when it came from the factory without having to worry while riding the bike.

Climbing on and off of the Ninja H2 won’t be an issue

Because the light abrasion will be against the clear bra and not the mirror finish. While carving turns in the mountains around San Diego with your buddies you won’t have to worry about small rocks that might get kicked up. The impact from small debris will be absorbed by the clear bra material. Getting a clear bra installed on your motorcycle really frees you up to think about what you want, the ride. We can install the material in many areas that are susceptible to rocks on most bikes.

Why would you want to do that?

Protection, Protection, Protection, which really means to maintain the resale value. Limited production, super cars, hyper cars have one draw back and that is the fear that driving it will cause damage. While there is no way to remove all risk, you can add a barrier of protection to the paint with clear bra. Adding this layer will allow you to drive your car without less worry that damage might occur. Damage yo might see while driving such as dirt and small rocks kicked up by other cars out on the road will be shielded from making contact with the paint. Small rock chips are both unsightly and expensive to repair. Repairs also have to be disclosed in the sale of the car in turn diminishing the resale value.

The Clear Bra works like this. Our team of installation technicians prepares your car by thoroughly cleaning and removing any buildup on the surface of your vehicles paint. They then apply a transparent film directly to the paint or your car. This film is the Clear Bra. On the Ford GT pictured, we applied the clear bra over all painted panels to get the most protection possible. In some cases we only apply clear bra to the forward facing areas. As time goes on there are less and less good examples of the original Ford GT like this one. that is the reason for protecting all the panels. Sometimes road debris goes past the hood or mirrors and can hit the rear area of the car.
