Elizabeth II
1926-
Reign: 1952-
Queen Elizabeth II was on tour in Kenya when she heard that her father had died. She was just 25 when she became queen, beginning a reign that would see the world and the country change rapidly.
At the start of her reign, Elizabeth made several tours to the commonwealth and became the first ruling monarch to visit Australia and New Zealand on a massive three month tour. Elizabeth’s strong relationship with the commonwealth is something she ha maintained to this day.
The queen has adapted to the modernisation of the country, which over her reign has included the introduction of the television and the internet. Embracing these new technologies, her coronation was televised live.
Although she has striven to maintain the stable family image her father created after the abdication of Edward VIII, she has not been without criticism. In 1982, the Prince of Wales married Lady Diana Spencer I a wedding that would capture the world’s imagination. However, the marriage failed and the divorce was messy, with both parties admitting to infidelity. Diana also gave an interview for a tell-all book in which she talked of her struggles in the family. In 1997, Diana died in a car crash and the queen was criticised for not returning to London immediately.
1992 was Elizabeth’s self proclaimed ‘annus horribilis’ (horrible year) as three of her children separated from their spouses and there was a large fire at Windsor Castle. The fire led to the queen paying taxes as the British people were in strong opposition to paying for the repairs. However, the queen has bee successful nevertheless. She has seen 12 US presidents and visited 116 countries in he course of her reign.
She, with her husband the Duke of Edinburgh, has navigated her family through the 20th and 21st centuries and ensured that they remain relevant in today’s world. The British Monarchy can now be found on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Tumblr.
The queen has over 600 patronages, and the focus on charity has become the corner stone of the Windsor age.
Elizabeth is a national symbol and one of the most recognised people in the world. Upon her death, the crown will fall to Prince Charles, who will become King Charles III.
In September 2015, Queen Elizabeth II will over take Queen Victoria as the longest reigning monarch in British history.
