Okay yall this app is for yapping right? I'm breaking my Tumblr rant virginity today. Let's pop my rant cherry and talk about the scarce representation of Diomedes in modern receptions of the iliad.
There's been plenty of adaptations of the Trojan war littered throughout our modern media, and yet a jarringly few amount of those include Diomedes, and even fewer yet include him as a major player.
This is so weird, seeing as Diomedes WAS a main character in the Trojan war. He had a whole book dedicated to him ffs, and a later book where he's a main player with Odysseus during their night raid of Troy. So why then doesn't anyone care to put him into their adaptations? Why has he been forgotten by modern retellers? And even if he is included into retellings, why is book 5 constantly overlooked? Or better yet– any of the books where he's a main player?
I have a theory (a game theory). Trojan war retellings typically centre around Achilles– or at least he's supposed to be the main, glorious fighter. And Diomedes... He's just too competent, too good, too outstanding. I believe they're afraid he'll overshadow Achilles. Achilles, who spends 90% of the iliad cooped up sulking in his tent, meanwhile Diomedes is out chasing Trojans and stabbing gods while being mistaken for a god himself. Not a good look for brilliant, god-like Achilles. I can assure you this doesn't come from a place of bias, I adore Achilles as a character in the Iliad and I am by no means belittling his feats of strength– but comparing his rage-fueled rampage to Diomedes' book 5 rampage... From an outsider's view, it might make you question the role of Aristos Achaion. And yet, adapting Diomedes' stunning competency in battle buffers that role at the same time.
We've seen the second best, making a fool out of the literal god of war and shaking the Trojan forces to their core, so what more of Achilles, said to be leagues above the rest? What more of Hector, who even Diomedes dares not to fight? Writers shouldn't fear Diomedes, but instead use him as a means to create that hierarchy of power, allowing the audience to truly see where the potential of Achilles lies. He doesn't have to overshadow Achilles, he could be used to indirectly bolster him instead! And in that way, this could help make modern retellings closer to the grand scale of the original epics. I find many retellings lose that... epicness.. of the epics.. for lack of a better term.. and part of that epicness entails the epic scales of strength, especially when it comes to big epic characters like Achilles, and including these power hierarchies and shows of immense strength and battle prowess could help to inject more of that epic-magic back into an otherwise un-epic narrative (take a shot everytime I say epic).
This is, of course, also paired with the fact that Diomedes' feats during the Trojan war are undeniably superhuman and difficult to adapt into live action film, and taking Troy (2004) as an example, many adaptations tend to shy away from including the gods as major players. This restriction of storytelling makes it impossible to truly tell a story about Diomedes, resident god harasser of the Achaeans. And Diomedes isn't the only victim of this– bringing Achilles back into the mix, his little spat with the river god, Scamander, isn't often included in modern media either. However, with the film technology of the current years at our disposal, there isn't much excuse to avoid covering these grand feats. All this to say that if Nolan, disappointing as he already is, decides not to include the full grandiosity of the original epic (given his previous admittedly beautiful feats of special effects and cinematography), I'm gonna throw a hissy fit. But! I digresssssssss
I wonder if you guys agree with me too 🙂↕️ I'm no expert, and this is just what I feel based on what I've seen. I'd love to see other people's different opinions on this issue too! 🩷 Peace out my gangalicious gangsters
#greek mythology#greek myth retellings#diomedes#the iliad#tagamemnon#because if you think about it it isnt a good look for your main character to be sulking around while another is absolutely kicking ass#lowkey embarrassing for Achilles#this eats ily <3

LET ME ADD MY OWN 2 CENTS
You can dismiss/recruit others at camps, but Sthenelus and Euryalus will always find you. (Cue exclamation mark + “YOU FORGOT TO BRING ME—!!”)
If you forcefully give Diomedes a bow during battle he might throw it at the enemy
TRYING TO IGNORE NESTOR: locks you into his "tales of glory" cutscene, which you can’t skip.
This becomes a meme: “BRB, stuck in Nestor.”
ODYSSEUS QUESTS
Initially fun, eventually mandatory.
You think you can skip them until the main quest mysteriously locks.
Your think youre playing an RPG? no welcome to odysseus simulator 1300 BCE
THERE COULD BE A SOCIAL SYSTEM
Like Hang out with comrades or kings (you get stats depending on who you align with). Choose companions for missions.
Maybe there could be affection stats?
If you hang with Odysseus he might start lying to you less and relax more; you can go on more missions with him
The Epigonis affections stats are alreadt high when in troy but you can still uncrease it by hanging out with them
Agamemnon = Terrible idea. You wake up with 3 side quests and an army of regrets.
Some gifts raise affection. Others disturb people.
All items Diomedes has stolen, found, or intends to hand out like a deranged war Santa.
Gifts marked with a red or gold glow depending on how cursed they are.
Some useless ahh gifts acn only be accepted by specific npc's
Exemple
Dolon’s Head
Only accepted by one NPC: weird priest in Troy (+strange ending).
Broken Arrow of Paris:
Utterly useless in combat. But if you give it to Helen during a stealth mission, she gives you some info about the trojan defense
Odysseus murders you over the Palladium—if affection score with him is low.
If he fails to do so you get the choice to either kill or spare him; if you kill him troy wont fall and the greeks wil lose
If you get drunk you can throw spears into the sea. (Have this options locked when sober for max confusion)
Diomedes stares into the fire with a thousand-yard stare if hes idle
His dialogue options at first are:
[ ] grunt respectfully
[ ] grunt disapprovingly
[ ] remain silent
I wont elaborate
During quests you could have something like
Limited-time strike mission during Trojan War arc.
Get his horses = unlock speed boost + ability to trample enemies.
If you let Odysseus kill Rhesus, you get a stealth buff.
If YOU do it, Athena gets weirdly proud and affectionate.
SECRET DEATHS + EASTER EGGS
If you fall off a cliff in the Italian zone, you unlock the “Aeneas Laughs At You” cutscene
If you try to kill Achilles early, you die instantly.
Each weapon have their own boost:
Examples:
Tydeus’s Fang:
+10 damage when Diomedes is below 50% health.
Turns kill animations more brutal.
MAYBE THERE COULD BE A CONTROL METER
A visible (or semi-visible) meter representing Diomedes’s mental/emotional control over his impulses, rage, and identity.
Starts full (100%) when he is in control — calm, measured, hopeful to be his own man.
Kills and reminders of Tydeus chip away at it, lowering the meter.
At low control, Diomedes behaves more recklessly, violent animations intensify, dialogue options narrow or become darker, and some quests or interactions change.
Combat Behavior Changes could vary depending on the percentage:
High Control (75-100%)
Diomedes fights with precision and honor; focused strikes, controlled power, and strategic moves.
He avoids collateral damage and keeps allies safe.
Combat animations are clean and purposeful.
Medium Control (50-74%)
Diomedes becomes noticeably more aggressive.
His attacks look harsher and more brutal, less calculated.
He might start ignoring calls to fall back or regroup but is still relatively cooperative and calm but getting agitated
Low Control (25-49%)
Diomedes loses patience and slams enemies violently.
His fighting style is berserk; wide swings, brutal finishing moves, and blood splatter effects increase staining the screen.
Friendly fire becomes more common; he might shove or hit allies who slow him down or block him.
NPCs start warning each other about his volatile mood on the battlefield.
Critical Control (0-24%)
Full-on rage mode.
Diomedes actively kills or seriously injures allies who get in his way, either by mistake or in rage.
Combat animations become savage and primal (killing enemies with his bare hands)
The battlefield becomes chaotic with allies trying to restrain or calm him.
You lose access to some leadership or diplomacy dialogue options.
Athena may withdraw blessings, or her spirit might appear warning him. He cannot block or dodge, only attack — relentlessly.
Visual/sound effects: blood splatter, heavy breathing, UI flickers red, music warps, screen trembling- this increases every time the meter drops
Occasionally, subtle whispers or visual distortions when Control is low.
If you dont increase the meter fast enought you will get knocked out by Sthenelus if hes nearby or you will be given the choice to commit some typa atrocitie that will make you lose Athena’s blessing
Meter goes UP when;
You choose to restraint in combat — sparing enemies, non-lethal takedowns (if allowed).
Meaningful conversations with trusted allies
Avoiding or shutting down conversations about Tydeus.
Meter goes DOWN when:
You kill an enemy (especially in brutal ways or “overkills”).
Repeated battles without rest or dialogue moments.
Hearing or seeing mentions or visions of Tydeus (e.g., NPCs glorifying his father, statues, dreams). (Although not by much)
Failing to comfort or open up to party members after trauma (skipping key emotional beats).
This meter could tie into multiple endings for example
If you keep your meter relatively hight throughout the game you unlock endings like: Ascend as a godlike ruler, balanced and strong.
Low control → Fall into madness or death by own hand or enemies.
ALSO ACHIEVMENTS
“Can’t Get a Word In”
Be talked over 20 times before getting to speak once.
“Tydeus Did It Better”
Hear someone compare you to your father 50 times.
(In a row earns a special bonus: your Control Meter drops instantly.)
“And I Took That Personally”
Drop-kick a character mid-monologue about your dad. (The option apears for a split secound)
“No Thoughts, Just Grunts”
Use only the grunt dialogue option for an entire questline.
“Horse Girl”
Unlock all 15 horses. Bonus if you try to name them.
“Whose Side Are You On?”
Kill an ally in low control mode because they blocked your path.
“That Was Mine”
Steal Achilles’s kill in a cutscene.
(Followed by: “You Died.”)
“Try a Bow”
Attempt to equip a bow. Get publicly shamed.
“Super Effective!”
Kill a named enemy with Dolon’s head as an improvised weapon.
“Cursed Wine Night”
Get drunk with Odysseus, Euryalus, and Sthenelus. Wake up in Sparta. With a goat.
“Diplomacy Is For Cowards”
Start a fight in a peace meeting. Bonus points if it's during a wedding. (Extra if its your own wedding)
“Oops, All PTSD”
Unlock 10 consecutive trauma flashbacks without resting.
“I Thought This Was a Hero Game”
Lose all your control, your friends, and your sanity.
(Special badge: Tydeus laughing in the background.)
“It’s Not Cheating If It’s Tragic”
Romance Thersander after marrying Aegialia.
“Sir, This Is a Funeral”
Flirt with someone at a funeral. Successfully.
I made a speacial tear for when youre low on control SO- Welcome to the cursed basement where Diomedes stops holding back, the meter is in the dirt, and so is your moral compass. Here's a tier of achievements specifically tied to losing control!
“This Is Fine”
Control Meter reaches red for the first time.
Diomedes audibly mutters, “I’m calm.”
“That’s a You Problem”
Kill an enemy who's already surrendering.
With a cutscene execution. Slow.
“Just Like Training”
Accidentally attack an Epigoni during a friendly spar.
then finish the job. (Im sorry)
“Horse of the Apocalypse”
Go berserk while riding.
Your horse throws you off. You kill it. You walk away silently.
OKA OKAY, ILL STOP WITG THE ACHIEVEMNTS. THEY WERE SO FUN TO MAKE
Muse sang to me about Diomedes RPG so here it goes
Tutorial mission would be going to Skyros to fetch Achilles, combat tutorial would be with Achilles as he goes to murder you and Odysseus
Epigoni are your default party option
The main quest is something cheesy like: surpass your father's shadow
You can choose different weapons to use, but if you click on a bow, Diomedes audibly scoffs and refuses
Nestor quest locks you when you accidentally pass him, and you're stuck in a dialogue (monologue) for the next half an hour
Odysseus would be that npc who keeps on having quests for you, and if you think you can avoid them, you have been cruelly lied to, because the main quest would be mysteriously locked until you finish (you're forced to finish) an Odysseus quest
You can unlock many different horses (including the Threcian ones)
You can pat the horses
You have an option to grunt during conversations (but that’s it as far as your dialogue options go /j)
Getting hit on the battlefield creates scars on Diomedes’s body
With every third level you get a ptsd flashback as a treat
His ultimate is when Athena comes down and gives him a hand
Euryalus and Sthenelus are these sort of npcs that start running after you with exclamation marks above their heads when they spot you
People found a way to glitch the game and stay in the god vision mode even outside of the battlefield
Other kings can challenge you for a kill count competition on the battlefield, and based on which of them it is the difficulty can be easy/intermediate/hard/arestia
There are multiple endings: ascending to godhood, being killed by king Daunus, being killed by your wife and her lover, dying of old age, Odysseus killing you during the Palladium theft,...
You choose the people with whom you want to drink, hang out, or go on missions with
You can get drunk
You can give gifts to different characters (the range of gifts is wide, from stolen armor to Dolon's head)
Loading screen has different myths on it
Idle animation: sharpening spear/sword
Saving Nestor that one time is optional (no one kicks you awake later in the game) (but not saving him is not a popular option either)
