Do you have any tips for writing? :}
You write so smoothly and in character, which I heavily struggle with 🥲
- 💿 anon
i responded to an ask like this a little bit ago, so here's some advice when it comes to writers block and keeping in character !!
as for writing smoothly, which i thank you for saying i do since it's a great fear of mine that i don't, it really just comes with practice and motivation !!
no, i'm not going to tell you that practice makes perfect. jUsT pRaCtiCe wRiTiNg eVeRy DaY—you could write every day and still suck at it, that's just the truth. sure, you might make some progress, but if you really wanna get good, you gotta learn some things.
here's my advice on what to learn:
different varieties of said. when people say that "said is dead", they're not kidding. sure, it's okay to say "said" every once in a while, but you could do better. like consider the scene. if your characters are hiding from someone, do you really think they're just going to say something out loud ? no, they're going to whisper. when someone's upset, they're more or likely not going to just say something. they're going to gripe, complain, mumble, seethe, etc. it really just depends if their emotion wields sadness, irritation, or anger.
example.
"i'm not a bad person," she said, "i just make mistakes."
sounds okay, but add emotion to that. emphasize how she said it.
"i'm not a bad person," she mumbled, "i just make mistakes."
another way to make scenes like this better is by adding actions. you don't have to add them all the time, but it can really impact a scene. like, if i added actions to the sentence above...
"i'm not a bad person," she mumbled while she raised a hand to wipe away her tears, "i just make mistakes."
description is the best way to go. dialogue is okay, but adding descriptions and actions to it makes it better. it allows you to feel what the character is feeling.
when it comes to learning description, really just find out varities of words. use words you'll probably only ever see in a dictionary, or a good piece of literature.
when i'm writing, i'll constantly find myself searching up, "other words for (insert word)", and then i just use whatever word that seems fit. of course, actually look up the definition of those synonyms, because they're not all going to mean EXACTLY what word you search up.
so, just make sure to define those synonyms before using them.
also, learn how to use italics. they can really impact a sentence, and it gives it meaning. italics are usually used to add emphasis to a word, in which that emphasis can be used in different ways.
"i loved you..."
now add italics.
"i loved you..."
italics just make things more emotional, in my opinion. it gives works life. humans tend to emphasize words whether they know it or not, and it just makes writing feel more realistic.
along with that, learn how to use proper punctuation. learn how emdashes work, semicolons, and colons.
emdashes are typically used to add thought in between sentences, or even create a cut-off for dramatic effect.
for example.
"well, we argued—if you could even call it that—and then she threw a fit."
"i did not—"
"yes, you did."
semicolons are mostly used for putting two independent clauses together, but the thing is that those clauses are similar.
for example.
"i love art; the mona lisa is my favourite piece."
colons are usually used when it comes to listing things.
"i need a lot of stuff from the store: apples, oranges, water, and candy."
also, don't just simply tell the readers how a character is feeling. it's okay to do it in some cases, like when a character is informing another how they feel, but add some action to it. show the readers beforehand, don't just tell them.
if someone's on the verge of crying because they're sad, make their lip tremble. make their eyes tear up while they hold a trembling smile. if a character is mad, describe them clenching their hands, or seething through their teeth depending on how angry they are.
along the lines of this, it's nice to add difference in characters voices.
describe one character having a sweet voice while another holds a smoky tone, and maybe their words crack every now and then. it's always nice to have diversity in voices.
when it comes to writing smoothly, like making a plot flow well, you don't want to skip over everything. sure, you could start off by saying, "oh this and this happened and now we're here." but it would be WAY better if you gave description about what led up to the moment you're writing about—especially in a oneshot.
a little bit of backstory never hurt anyone, but also do not dump all of the backstory onto the readers. slowly introduce stuff throughout the book. if you're writing a oneshot and the backstory is important, then go right ahead, but in an actual book, provide little snippets if possible.
when starting a writing, you want to start off your work with something that'll catch the reader's attention. it could be a question, a fact, or even some dialogue. really anything that'll trap the readers attention before you get into the description.
don't just jump into scenes.
i KNOW how hard it is to want to rush things in order to get into the romantic or violent scenes, but there needs to be background information. there needs to be tension. you need to show the readers what's about to happen before it actually does. you want to give them an idea of what's going on.
you're not just going to describe two characters as love interests and immediatly switch to a scene where they're kissing—no. just no. i am guilty of doing that, but you all don't have to be.
add that tension. add their eyes flickering to the other's lips. add one of them slowly getting close to the other while their voices get quieter. it not only shows the characters having tension, but the reader can quite literally feel it too. it's worth it, trust me.
this is kinda off topic, but don't burn yourself out. don't stress about getting something written—that's what makes a writing sour. the readers can tell the difference when you give some works your all, and others not so much. of course, you're not going to give all of your works everything you got. you're not going to be as motivated to write some things as others, and that's completely okay, but just don't force yourself to write it. write little bits here and there if you have too.
also, don't hate on your works, please. i've been guilty of this many times, and despising something you just wrote isn't what makes you a better writer. i've looked back on my writings over the years, and did i immensely cringe ? very much so, but i didn't hate on my works like i used to. i saw how i changed for the better when it came to writing, and i found solace in realizing that not all of my works are going to be my best ones. i'm not going to always write the best things, but knowing that i at least tried is what gives me comfort. i like knowing that i tried, and i like knowing that i can benefit from that feeling.
my final tip, and i consider this the most important one, is to not compare your works to others. everyone has their own writing style, and readers are going to have a preference on what they like to read. don't compare yourself to some writer who gets more engagement than you do. i've done that plenty of times, and it really doesn't help. all it makes you want to do is quit writing because you believe you'll never get there. i've wanted to quit whenever i noticed how other writers seemed to do better than me, but that's the thing.
those writers probably have felt or feel the same. comparison is a horrible thing, and in the end, it doesn't get you anywhere. so, instead of worrying about other writers, worry about yourself. cherish those people who like your fics, for there doesn't need to be a big number of likes or follows to prove that you're a good writer. all the best writers are the ones who know their worth.
so, if you do decide to start writing, don't compare. in the end, whether you're big or small, there's someone somehwere in the world who looks at your page constantly waiting for an update. there's someone that smiles every time you upload, and there's someone that feels joy whenever they read your stuff.
it's not about the numbers, but rather the feelings. cherish the fact that you're making someone's day, and that alone is enough to keep someone going.
i hope this helped, and i do apologize for how long this is !! if you want better tips, i would suggest going to pinterest or something, for that's where i started out when i first started writing. i'm happy you asked me, though, it brings me joy knowing someone thinks i write well enough to ask for advice.

just found out cis men can get endometriosis but it’s extremely rare
um
we win I guess??????
not wishing this pain upon anyone btw its absolutely horrendous
endometriosis is so weird because what do you mean I have pain comparable to labor pains, this could k̶i̶l̶l̶ me, and yet we still don’t have a cure for it
you know what
hot take
if CIS men had this condition there would be a lot more research and there would also most likely be a cure by now
