I've been arguing with religious believers I happen to work with and who, in their own words, do not "understand" how someone can be queer. My argument is that, same as they feel their belonging to their religion, to their country, queer people feel a similar belonging that happens to be about another kind of community, to the queer community, and to their own culture, that in the end we're not that different, we're just aiming for different things. They say they don't understand that.

#I get what op is trying to explain but I think they are very different experiences#like I'd compare religious communities to politics sooner than I'd compare them to identity or location#since they are based on your beliefs and ideology#you can forge a community around these things but it's a nebulous changeable thing#whereas identity (in terms of gender/sexuality) is who you are#gender/sexuality based community is just 'hey we both are dudes' or 'oh we both like girls'#and community tied to a location is just that 'hey we are from the same town/country'#they're people you are likely to have to share physical space with whether you are ideologically similar or not#they all feel very different but maybe I just have a weird outlook on this#like no one is queer because they feel they belong in the queer community my#they're queer because their identity is considered outside the norms of society#sure it's nice to hang out with other queer people but there is no queer ideology#if you're gay you're gay if you're trans you're trans#its like saying you're a woman because you felt drawn to the community of women#I'm just picturing someone seeing the down with cis bus post and going#'ah I feel very drawn to this community and would like to convert to these beliefs'#which is hilarious but like ??? 👍#this could be utterly nonsense rambling I'm still really sick so sorry if this makes no sense lol
