I’m happy to share these paintings inspired by my trip to Jaipur with the Jaunt!
"Growing up in Manila, a city not known for architectural feats, I always feel drawn to places with impressive and distinctive buildings. I wanted to see Jaipur, the Pink City, in the hopes of living out some romanticized travel fantasy. At times it was tough being a solo female traveller in India. You get a lot of stares and people take advantage when they know you're not from around there. I loved getting lost in the forts at the outskirts of the city and wandering around the markets in the old part of town. I was especially taken by the patterns that I saw everywhere, florals block printed onto bed sheets, mosaics made out of mirrors, muqarnas carved into ceilings, lattice screens made of sandstone, arched windows, handprinted blue ties. I admired both the order and the chaos. I also went to a block printing workshop in Bagru, a small town known for its textile printing, to try to learn a new skill that I could incorporate into this project for The Jaunt. It was inspiring to see all the different motifs of the Bagru textiles. When I got back to New York, I bought a book about Islamic art and architecture, in an attempt to teach myself the basics of geometric art. The resulting paintings strayed from the rigid and precise tradition, but are a mix of a systematic approach to painting in a grid and my impressions of the city."

My flag for the group show Object_ify 139 curated at the Ace Hotel
I can’t believe that climate change is still an issue in 2017, yet here we are. Can we make America green again?
The Trump administration is working to dismantle progress made on climate and environmental protection by supporting the coal industry, putting climate deniers in office, threatening to break the Paris Agreement, erasing pages on climate change from the EPA website, etc. This threatens the our future generation’s health, access to clean water, air and the natural world that they inherit. Proceeds from this flag will be donated to Sierra Club, an environmental organization that tackles both conservation and protecting green governmental policies.

“Flags” Object_ify 139 commissioned 9 artists to design a flag to represent ideals they believe in and that they feel are being threatened by the current administration. Each artist also selected an organization, directly related to the flag's concept, that will receive 25% of all proceeds from the flags and corresponding book. The show is on view at the lobby of Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles through the Month of May.

For the NYT Sunday Review: “What ‘White’ Food Meant to a First-Generation Kid” AD: Nathan Huang
I definitely related to this particular immigrant story, growing up in the Philippines and thinking nothing of eating Spam and Vienna sausages. When you’re on the outside of a culture, you only pick up what’s available to you through the media and in this case that was that being “American” was equal to fast and factory foods.

Work the the UK paperback edition of Course of Love by Alain de Botton
I feel so thankful to have drawn for this and happy to see my images accompany de Botton’s insight into human relationships. Here’s one of my my favorite passages:
What makes people good communicators is, in essence, an ability not to be fazed by the more problematic or offbeat aspects of their own characters. They can contemplate their anger, their sexuality, and their unpopular, awkward, or unfashionable opinions without losing confidence or collapsing into self-disgust. They can speak clearly because they have managed to develop a priceless sense of their own acceptability. They like themselves well enough to believe that they are worthy of, and can win, the goodwill of others if only they have the wherewithal to present themselves with the right degree of patience and imagination.
