But, being called out as he is, he steps out from the shadows and nearer to the Third's captain. 'The whole Quincy situation', huh? It was true that battles and wars usually strengthened warriors' bonds. This is why he and Kurosaki had become vast friends. Why he and his captain were on such frankly unbelievably good terms, currently.. But Renji was not so inclined to give the former-traitor any slack in that regard. As quick as a spinning coin on its side could fall to one side or the other, so too could the one-armed man, in Renji's opinion.

But what did he know? Who'd listen to his complaints and protests? No one, as it turned out. Even if he held a position nearly as prestigious as the one the traitor had weaseled his way back into. Had the initial reinstatement of Ichimaru not taught him that already?

Perhaps he should give it a rest now that Izuru was.. Like that.. There were very few terrible things Ichimaru could do to his old friend now that would worsen his situation.

"You'd think?" He quirks a tattooed brow. "Who's this person yer basin' that hypothetical on?" He sucks his teeth, amber eyes pointedly avoiding those opposite. "They can make me work with ya, they can't make me like ya." Or make him respect him, or forgive him. Renji never thought of himself as someone that held grudges, but lo and behold..

What's with all these rumours? He doesn't like for that sort of thing to be present in his division. Gossip is a low form of communication. He wonders if Renji would like it if --- He said something along the lines of: Rumour has it I love you. But it's silly. It's childish. He thinks it's what they refer to as flirting. How stupid. "I heard you had to correct some of our division members for inappropriate behaviour." He says instead. He knows Renji is too soft on their subordinates, especially newer members. "Good work." I love you.

He nearly startles. His captain is so light-footed. But perhaps he's gotten used to it, because he has no startle response now. He remembers how that had been different before he and Byakuya reconciled their feelings. He'd been so afraid to speak his mind then. Or even to look at his captain properly. He looks to him with a smile now, pleased to see him, despite the subject matter.

"Mm.. unfortunately.." He concurs. "They were expressing themselves in a way not befitting of an officer of the rokubantai." He won't repeat any of it to Byakuya. It's not really important what they had said anyway. Just that it had been dealt with.

He feels the intense urge to kiss him just then, when he praises him. Just a few years ago Byakuya would never have bothered with- or even considered praise. "Just doin' my job." he says but his smile says I love you too.

This makes him laugh out loud. "As if. He's untouchable yanno." He grins widely. He is quite proud of that, honestly. He thinks his captain { his partner} is amazing to be so strong.

"'sides, it ain't really possible ta have more 'n me." He's got thousands of little ones. He thinks all of them count separately.

"First'f all, that's Kuchiki-taichou t'you. Second of all-"

"-I'd be very careful with yer next few words, and I'd advise them to be to the effect of 'I am deeply sorry, I dunno what came over me' an' 'I'll never display such blatant disrespect t'a cap'n 'f the Gotei 13 again.'"

--- "Why? What've you heard?" He recognizes his own anxiety in his voice and schools his expression accordingly, straightening up a bit and clearing his throat. "I mean.. I would think he'd tell me first b'fore involving a buncha random people." It wasn't like Byakuya to tell anyone else at all, let alone before discussing it with Renji first. If anything, this sounds more like a wish from the Kuchiki family rather than a true fact. Yeah, that must be it. Renji soothes himself with that. And with the knowledge that he and Byakuya had been in quite a good place of late. No need to panic..

--- "Uh.. Rumour has it yer gonna end up sliced ta bits if Kuchiki-taichou finds out this is th'kinda thing yer keepin' busy with. Ain'tcha got better things ta be concernin' yerself with?" Like a report of some kind, or training? Renji should be disciplining them simply for bringing something as distasteful as this up, but.. He's sometimes a bit too soft on the youngsters, still.

"Shut yer yap, an'don't let him hear you. Go clean th'practice swords or somethin'." There's plenty of those, it'll take hours. Perhaps that is punishment enough for now.

--- "'s that doin' th'rounds already? ...Sheesh.." He would have thought it'd at least take a little longer before that information got spread around. It's not like he was screaming it from the rooftops. Which.. Perhaps he should be. Though.. Nothing was official yet. Insofar that.. Byakuya had expected them to marry the second they had admitted their feelings and decided to be in a relationship, even when they had still kept it from all souls at that time. Renji hadn't really understood how that would work; a secret marriage of some kind? Besides, he hadn't been ready then. It is not as though he and Byakuya had set a date. And the conversation they should have about that.. Well..

Maybe one of the servants at the estate blabbed? Though Renji is sure Byakuya would scoff if he suggested that might be the case. It'd be offensive to the Kuchiki family itself { somehow } if their servants weren't trustworthy.

So in the end.. He decides it probably doesn't matter where the information came from. "Someday, sure." He replies vaguely. Whether that will be someday soon.. That remains to be seen.
