Taking Bit Of A Break...

Due to various events going on, as seen online, I need to take a mental break from the internet. This is probably not the best time for it but it feels necessary at this point. I apologise if you don't think this a great time to do so.

My anxiety over current events has already lead to my anxiety skyrocketing. With how certain news sites and their clickbaity titles, leading me to be confused and panicking, it has not helped my current mental state. The effects of the Online Safety Act, (and similar laws), will also make it difficult to access information due to censorship. There are already so many people signing the petition but based on the government response, it may still continue to go ahead regardless. (That doesn't mean you shouldn't stop supporting the petition.)

I am generally private about my personal life when it comes to online spaces, so I will not be going into details about it here. But I will state that there friends and family in need of my support. So, I am trying to keep my mental state clear so I can prioritise their own health, as well as mine. I may still watch videos on YouTube and like posts, but otherwise I will be keeping interactions to a minimum except for a few friends online.

So please; stay informed, be supportive where/when you can and take care of yourself.

Hey guys something fucking bad happened

KOSA/the kids online safety act has been reintroduced into legislature after it passed Senate last year and then got snubbed. It is not unlike the bill that just passed in the UK a few weeks ago. If you don't want what happened in the UK to happen here, now would be a good time to vocally oppose it.

Here is a petition that can be signed by Americans. Attached to the petition is an easy tool that allows you to call and leave messages for your representatives. I have already done so. You can also email your representatives by searching for their name, most have message submission boards as well. This thing died once, it can die again.

Please sign/share the petition and contact your representatives.

Honesty I do agree that some works just take "subversive" as a means of just making it dark shock-horror for the sake of it, rather than using subversion for anything else. While I haven't seen it other than a few clips, Puella Magi Madoka Magica is supposedly a prime example of the dark subversive take on the genre. From what I've seen, it general works because of the story it wants to tell. (Although I don't know how to feel about all the spinoffs made after the original series ended.) Playing it straight with certain tropes in a genre isn't necessarily a bad thing; there's a reason we are so familiar with them and can be used effectively. You have to be aware of what you're subverting and why. So, I kind of get annoyed when I see some dark take on a typically cheerful or wholesome media that doesn't seem to have a reason for its dark take other than supposedly being "mature" or "subversive". Never mind you can tackle mature topics in media without sacrificing the overall atmosphere. You just need to learn how... I feel like Aika in this scene.

Speaking of... PPPIDWTBAMG is a fun take on the magical girl genre and I still get a chuckle watching it. The theme of work/life balance makes sense in such a genre and I don't think I've seen many people really talk about it. With how many people struggling to keep themselves afloat, I think tackling this subject in PPPIDWTBAMG will refreshing. (Plus more scenes like this PLEASE. I couldn't stop laughing!)

I hope this isn't worded strangely but it really means so much to me to see a new subversive magical girl show that still manages to keep the core values of what makes the genre of magical girls so lovable. I feel like in recent years any "twist" on the genre has just been very dark shock-horror. But PPPIDWTBAMG just feels so joyous, while still straying from being a generic magical girl show and having a very strong self-identity outside of the genre. It has a sort of whimsy at it's core, I think that's the best word I can use for it. I just keep smiling whenever I see your posts because despite being a new project it's just giving me so much nostalgia for the genre I loved when I was little. Thank you for keeping that spirit alive and for your hard work! <3

Aw thank you! That was very much the goal. I love how positive and fun and earnest and unapologetically girly magical girl shows are and I want my project to have a similar feel but mixed with my taste in comedy and characters!

I know "subversive" shows or concepts are met with a lot of hesitation but I hope people see as the project goes on that it's not meant to be SUPER genre-twisting or a parody. It's tackling a theme I see in a lot of magical girl shows already (work/life balance) and making it the main focus of the story. We're jumping into the middle of Aika's story when she's already at that low point and has to build herself back up again.

The fact that people don't think friendship is enough to justify characters doing insane acts of love for each other baffles me. Like have you never loved your friend so so much you want to live in their ribcage. Have you never been really weird about a friend. Have you never wanted to bite your friends parents or shove them down a staircase. Have you never wanted to be buried in the same grave as a friend. Have u never. How do u people live like this.

While it's true that mandatory identity verification will inevitably be leaked on a massive scale, the thing you need to understand when framing these arguments is that a lot of the folks in favour of such measures don't see that as a bad thing. Full de-anonymisation of the Internet is their explicit goal. Like, the actual objective here is for everyone to have a public record of everything they say and do – online or otherwise – linked to their government ID. The universal panopticon is the good ending as far as these people are concerned.

In light of yet another anti-human, anti-reality crackdown around sex by puritanical, social control groups:

We have got to make access to information about interpersonal and private intimacy a human right so that no individuals or groups can restrict another human being from being able to learn from those resources.

Information is freedom, information is life, all people have the right to learn about themselves, their bodies, and the reality of the world around them so that they are enabled to live as a fully informed adult with total access to bodily autonomy and a coherent grasp on the tangible facts of the reality in which they live.

Yes, this means allowing children to have access to age-appropriate educational information about sex and socializing that respects their intelligence and treats their questions with neutrality and honesty. Yes, this means especially including access about sexuality, gender, signs of abuse. It is our jobs as adults to be mature and lock in about topics that trigger our culturally ingrained knee-jerk disgust and discomfort about these hard and necessary topics.

This is about survival skills, and deactivating our reactionary behaviors so that we can communicate functionally.

I was a kid whose access to education about sexuality, my body, my gender, and socialization was restricted. I was a kid who was exclusively taught shame, humiliation, and disgust, and I struggled into my adulthood because of that. Lack of information left me vulnerable to abuse and sexually-off behaviors from my peers. Information gives kids the tools to identify cruel and abnormal behavior and gives them the basis of knowledge that they will need to be able to build upon.

It also enables children to grow up and escape hostile, knowledge-restricting households, and to know that the treatment they are experiencing is not normal and that they are having a rational reaction to irrational circumstances.

Information protects people from falling victim to social-control groups and enables individuals in escaping from authoritarian homes, religious offshoots, and organizations.

At the end of the day its less about being scandalized by sex for these groups... It is almost exclusively about Social Control, particularly control over women, children, and non-heterosexual, non-cisgender people.

If we are to be able to move forward with the emotional intelligence and capacity to understand that humans are extremely complex, diverse, and not easily categorized (as is most of nature, from which we are animals derived from), then access to knowledge must be an inalienable right.

Libraries already exist as havens of knowledge but are under increasing attack for this very reason. Libraries must be a place we enshrine as part of public welfare, they are non-negotiable places for community and are a non-judgmental, self-directed or advised center for information seeking. They must be easily accessible, dutifully defended, and community protected.

The way you destroy fascists is with the free-flow of knowledge rooted in reality, refined with the intent to educate at a variety of levels to enable all people, from child to elder, to inform and arm themselves with the invaluable knowledge of life.
