Landsknecht Doppelsoldner.
This particular Doppelsoldner gets his name from the double pay he received for fighting in the front ranks. Armed with the huge beidenhander sword, his job is to hack his way into enemy pike formations allowing his own troops to exploit the gap he creates.
He will also be a skilled fighter with the sword and is certainly a Marksbruder, a combat certified member of the fighters guild of the Brotherhood of St Mark. Armoured for assaults, he wears a munitions grade halbes harnisch, a reinforced globular breastplate with sliding gussets at the arm holes, an “ Almain” collar normally with segmented armour for the upper arms or “ munnions” attached. The armour is finished with knee length tassets, half gauntlets and a burgonet helmet. In combat he’ll also carry the katzbalger, a heavy short sword for close in work.

It took me a couple days to finally ‘land’ after coming back from an amazing week in Portugal. Nine individuals who either knew each other vaguely or not at all gathered in Cepães, a remote village in the region of Fafe, to learn and practice the traditional stick fencing art called Jogo do Pau. A living fencing form dating back several hundred years in history. Perhaps ‘barely breathing’ would be a better alternative for ‘living’ as there are very few who still practice JdP the way it’s done in Cepães. Focused on outnumbered fighting, combating in groups and lastly duelling, the nine of us built a strong bond and gained an incredible experience. I’m grateful beyond explanation for this adventure and hope I get to return next year! 🗡🌍 (at Cepães, Braga, Portugal)

GFFG Montantero May 6-7 2017
Our pilot run through of our concept “Montantero” was a success and everyone, including us instructors, learned a lot! Participants learned how to handle being outnumbered and desperate, how to escape a surrounded situation, herding and controling a group of people with minimal focus in the typical “Rules” or “Reglas”. During a total of 12 hours only two of them were used to practice the anonymous 1530 rules, as they are in my personal opinion, the best beginners treatise for the Montante. It’s was exciting to get good feedback from the participants so that we’re sure to give our future workshops an even better experience.
To get in touch with the instructors, email gffgmontante(at)gmail.com
Videos from the workshop will be released later!

Godinho’s second chapter
youtube
In this video the montantero faces two opponents in a very narrow alley, so narrow that it makes all (exept vertical) hews impossible.  It would, however, be very wrong to think that this is a bad situation for the two-handed sword to be used in. In this tutorial we will show you that the advantage of reach is still very defining in combat.

Our third video is up and this time we level up from fighting against a single shield bearer to two shieldsmen instead! We decided to portray this rule in a wide street but as long as the shieldsmen are close enough the montantero can use this rule in an open space as well, targeting them both with a single strike.

Our second video in the series and the first covering one of Godinho’s rules for the Montante. We decided to make the video for his fourth rule first as it deals with a single opponent and is easy to learn for any beginner. This particular rule focuses on fighting against a single shieldsman, keeping him at a distance and attacking his weak points. Subscribe to the channel for more content!

I find these two-handed swords to be quite interestingly looking ever since I saw them in illustrations, like this one below, which is a close up of a large painting depicting the battle of Alesia. Interesting to see a real one, even if it’s just a picture.

Weekend consisted of a two day workshop in Bolognese Swordsmanship with Ilkka Hartikainen as instructor. It was very inspiring to learn from someone as skilled and experienced as him and I learned so much that I'm definitely buying a sidesword now, haha! Thanks to Robin for letting me borrow his sword, Nico and Gothenburg Free Fencers Guild for hosting a great weekend! 🗡 #bolognese #swordsmanship #gffg #sidesword #Regenyei #sword #HEMA
